Polis – Weltklang

Polis – Weltklang

The art/hardrockband Polis was founded about ten years ago. These five men have been influenced by various 70’s bands like Uriah Heep and Epitaph. To emphasize the 70’s feeling, they worked for the recordings of ‘Weltklang‘ with vintage equipment. Moreover, the album was recorded at the Weltklang Tonstudio. This is a former factory. Because of the wooden floor and ceiling, the end result sounds different than most other studios.

The intro of ‘Tropfen‘ is vocal. After this first sentence the music kicks in. During an instrumental piece, the organ playing clearly has its wonderful roots from the seventies. You can hear some ‘cracks’ here and there, but of course that’s allowed. The voice of guest singer Helena Leicht may be a bit thin, but she has a beautiful sound. Her vocals form a fine contrast with the rock that’s coming next. Instrumental and vocal parts alternate. The build-up to the end is awesome. This runs nicely over to ‘Gedanken‘.
The voice is between talking and singing. Later there is an interaction between talking and singing. The background singing is well integrated. The sound of the music is pleasantly retro, this fits the music style.

The drumming is special, drum and bass seem to go against each other for a while. Yet the whole remains in balance. There are many details in the vocals, this runs nicely back and forth in headphones. The small part played in the end is beautifully done. In the quiet intro of ‘Leben‘ the crackling sound is quite striking. But it is not annoying. The guitar playing is compelling, the bass is pleasantly present. The alternation between rocking parts and minimalistic pieces is very well chosen here as well. When Christian Roscher sings almost solo, his voice comes into its own.
The modest and emotionally played piece touches me. The same goes for the words Christian sings with feeling.
Abendlied‘ is a kind of lullaby, and is sung and played in a fittingly fragile way.
In ‘Sehnsucht‘, besides the quiet pieces, there is the unadulterated ’70’s rock again. This song consists of three parts.
The start of ‘Gebet‘, the second part, is spherical, the vocals feel like a prayer, but that is of course the intention. In the third part, vocals and music are completely different. That is why ‘Steig herab‘ has a different atmosphere. The stacked vocals are quite high and a bit sweet. The piano playing is nicely subdued. The build-up to the end is good, just like in the previous songs.

Also ‘Mantra‘ has a unique intro. The vocals consist of a number of layers, a part is sung quite low. There is a mix of different voices and styles. These styles don’t sound Western. The cool percussion reinforces this. This last song fades out fantastically.

Although the roots come from the 70’s, Polis has developed a very own style of music.
Also, vocally they have their own sound, not only because of the colour of the voice. But also, because they sing in German. ‘Weltklang‘ is a good and diverse album.
