Norwegian vocalist Tommy Sebastian Halseth is known, among others, as ex member from the prog metal band ‘Atrox’, and the heavy metal band ‘Griffin’. He had various musical ideas, that’s why he set up a project. This became the alternative rock band Matterhorn. There are several bands with this name, mostly metal bands. ‘Outside‘ is the debut album of these Norwegians. This theme album is about the left-out people in our modern society, alienated in this chaotic and superficial world.

Partly due to the sound of the horns, the instrumental intro of ‘Outside‘ has jazz influences. Tommy has his own unique voice with a clear pronunciation. He stretches a few words longer. The stacked vocals are well done, and are also nicely distributed over the headphones. The same goes for a piece of percussion. The atmosphere is lighter than expected with this theme. Almost imperceptibly there are quite a few layers in the music. Part of the guitar playing of this well constructed opening track is a bit dull.
The quiet intro of ‘Aura Noire‘ is nice and bright, the mood a bit more melancholic. Again, the stacked vocals stand out positively. When Andreas Stunes starts drumming, it is appropriately quiet at first, he builds it up nicely in intensity. Tempo and volume change a few times, but the quiet flow remains until the last note. ‘Aorta‘ has a beautiful minimalistic intro, music and vocals are a bit down. The string instruments form a good combination with the low bass notes of Edvin Matthieson. The build-up to slightly more power is beautiful, tempo and volume change a few times gradually. The minimalist piece has a beautiful mix of string instruments and choral singing, among other things. The beautiful soft details in the music come out best when listening with headphones. The ‘lovely pop rock’ turns into rock, which contains a wonderful piece of guitar playing. This beautiful song has a minimalistic ending.

The acoustic guitar playing in ‘Oceana‘ blends beautifully with the other instruments. The atmosphere is dreamy, and there are beautiful soft details. Here Tommy’s singing is a bit too loud in view of the friendly music. In the harmony vocals the voices colour beautifully together. If you listen with the headphones, the repeating percussion in the background is too dominant. This almost undoes the wonderful atmosphere of this song. Furthermore, the mutual harmony of the instruments is excellent. The spoken words, and the vocals in ‘Døden og meg‘ are in Norwegian. I do not understand a word of it, but that is not bad. The way of (background) singing fits well with the music. Vocal parts alternate with instrumental pieces. After a number of spoken sentences this well constructed track ends.

A number of songs, for example ‘Last page‘ and ‘Silhouette‘ have nice details at the end. But ‘Bruit Blanc‘ ends after a lovely rocking piece in a slightly disappointing fade out. The string instruments merge nicely with the other music. But to emphasize the emotion they should have been given a little more space. The music seems simple, because it listens away so easily. But the rather quiet songs are ingeniously constructed. This applies to both the changing rhythms and (gentle) melodies. Regularly there are quite a lot of layers and details, so you keep hearing new things. You will hear the soft details really well with the headphones. Because of all this ‘Outside‘ has to grow, but ‘Matterhorn‘ has launched an excellent debut album.

Matterhorn – Outside

De Noorse zanger Tommy Sebastian Halseth kennen we onder andere als ex lid van de prog metal band ‘Atrox’, en de heavy metal band ‘Griffin’. Hij had diverse muzikale ideeën, daarom zette hij een project op. Dit werd de alternatieve rockband Matterhorn. Er zijn wel meerdere bands met deze naam, meestal zijn het metal bands. ‘Outside’ is het debuutalbum van deze Noren. Dit thema album gaat over de mensen die we niet mee laten tellen in onze moderne maatschappij, waardoor ze vervreemden in deze chaotische en oppervlakkige wereld.

Mede door het geluid van de blazers heeft het instrumentale intro van ‘Outside’ jazzinvloeden. Tommy heeft een eigen kleur stem met een duidelijke uitspraak. Hij rekt een aantal woorden langer uit. De gestapelde zang is goed gedaan, en is bovendien mooi verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Dat geldt ook voor een stukje percussie. De sfeer is luchtiger dan verwacht bij dit thema. Bijna ongemerkt zitten er best veel laagjes in de muziek. Een deel van het gitaarspel van deze goed opgebouwde openingstrack is een beetje dof.
Het rustige intro van ‘Aura Noire’ is mooi helder, de stemming wat meer melancholiek. Weer valt de gestapelde zang positief op. Als Andreas Stunes begint te drummen is dat in eerste instantie passend rustig, hij bouwt dit mooi op in intensiteit. Tempo en volume veranderen een paar keer, maar de rustige flow blijft tot en met de laatste toon bestaan. ‘Aorta’ heeft een prachtig minimalistisch intro, muziek en zang zijn een beetje down. De strijkinstrumenten vormen een goede combinatie met de lage bastonen van Edvin Matthieson. De opbouw naar iets meer power is mooi, tempo en volume wisselen een paar keer geleidelijk. Het minimalistische stukje heeft een prachtige mix van onder andere strijkinstrumenten en koorzang. De mooie zachte details in de muziek komen het best tot zijn recht als je met koptelefoon luistert. De ‘lieflijke poprock’ gaat gaaf over in rock, hierin zit een heerlijk stuk gitaarspel. Dit prachtige nummer heeft een minimalistisch einde.

Het akoestisch gitaarspel in ‘Oceana’ mengt zich met mooi met de overige instrumenten. De sfeer is heerlijk dromerig, en er zijn mooie zachte details. Hier is de zang van Tommy iets te luid ten op zichten van de vriendelijke muziek. In de samenzang kleuren de stemmen mooi bij elkaar. Als je met de koptelefoon luistert, is de herhalende percussie op de achtergrond te overheersend. Dit haalt de heerlijke sfeer van dit nummer bijna onderuit. Verder is de onderlinge harmonie van de instrumenten uitstekend. De gesproken woorden, en de zang in ‘Døden og meg’ zijn in het Noors. Ik versta er geen woord van, maar dat is niet erg. De manier van (achtergrond)zang past goed bij de muziek. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met instrumentale stukken. Na een aantal gesproken zinnen eindigt deze goed opgebouwde track.

Een aantal nummers, bijvoorbeeld ‘Last page’ en ‘Silhouette’ hebben leuke details op het einde. Maar ‘Bruit Blanc’ eindigt na een heerlijk rockend stuk in een licht teleurstellende fade out.
De strijkinstrumenten smelten mooi samen met de overige muziek. Maar om de emotie te benadrukken hadden ze iets meer ruimte mogen krijgen. De muziek lijkt eenvoudig, want het luistert zo gemakkelijk weg. Maar de vrij rustige nummers zijn ingenieus opgebouwd. Dit geldt voor zowel de wisselende ritmes als (lieflijke) melodieën. Regelmatig zijn er best veel laagjes en details, daardoor hoor je steeds nieuwe dingen. De zachte details hoor je pas echt goed met de koptelefoon. Door dit alles moet ‘Outside’ moet groeien, maar ‘Matterhorn’ heeft een uitstekend debuutalbum gelanceerd.
