Bij de Britste symfonische metalband Damnation Angels zijn een paar wisselingen in de bezetting geweest. De nieuwste bandleden frontman Iggy Rod (Ignacio Rodriguez) en bassist Nic Southwood waren er al bij tijdens hun Europese tour in 2015, waar ze support act waren voor Threshold. Het ‘Fiber Of Our Being’ is het eerste album waarop dit tweetal te horen is.

De mix van metal en symfonie is er meteen bij de instrumentale opening van dit album.
Als de drums erbij komen, is het ritme van ‘More Than Human’ opzwepend. Iggy heeft een krachtige stem en een vrij duidelijke uitspraak. Het ritme blijft een tijdje opzwepend, en heeft soms een vleugje pop. De achtergrondzang is prima toegevoegd, en vormt een mooi geheel met de rest. Deze openingstrack is zowel boeiend als toegankelijk.

Ook ‘Railrunner’ heeft voldoende veranderingen tussen de metal en de klassieke elementen. Iggy kan zowel de powerstukken als de klassieke delen prima aan. In de rustig delen komt de warmte in zijn stem mooi tot zijn recht.

De melodie van ‘Fiber Of Our Being’ blijft heerlijk in je hoofd kleven. Door de opzwepende opbouw zing je het refrein van deze titel track al snel voluit mee. De gitaar scheurt heerlijk door een instrumentaal stuk heen. Het plotselinge eind is verassend.

‘Our Last Light’ heeft een prachtige klein gespeeld en gezongen start. De opbouw naar meer tempo en volume is prima.
In alle nummers verlopen de wendingen goed, maar het patroon van de wendingen zelf is niet heel verrassend. Er blijft een prima mix en /of afwisseling tussen rock/metal en klassiek. De koorzang en/of achtergrondzang zorgt voor een mooie aanvulling. Vocale delen worden prima afgewisseld met instrumentale stukken, waarin het tempo soms flink hoog ligt. Regelmatig zijn er heerlijke gitaarsolo’s. Dit alles zorgt voor pakkende en toegankelijke nummers.

Er staat één epic op deze cd, en dat is ‘Remnants Of A Dying Star’. De eerste paar seconden zijn rustig, de metal wordt stap voor stap opgebouwd. Ineens houdt de muziek zich bijna stil, en Iggy zingt enkele zinnen zo goed als solo. Als tempo en volume in zang en muziek toenemen, smelt de koorzang mooi samen met de klassieke invloeden. Het mysterieuze stuk zorgt voor een aangename spanningsboog, de voorspelbaarheid is even helemaal weg. Hoewel het opzwepende stuk niet heel origineel is, knalt het wel heerlijk uit de speakers. De opbouw naar het einde is gaaf!

Door de vrouwelijke zang heeft ‘A Sum Of Our Parts’ een verrassend intro. De warme stem van Iggy past er prima bij. Daarnaast klinkt zijn stem af en toe vervormd. De toegevoegde geluidjes halen wat aandacht weg van de klassieke elementen. Dit laatste nummer heeft een mooie mix van poprock met klassieke elementen.

Iggy heeft best een groot bereik, zijn stem kan de hoge noten prima aan. Zijn veelzijdige stem past zowel bij de metal, als bij de klassieke delen. De contrasten tussen de forte en pianissimo, dus tussen de hard en zacht gespeelde delen is prima. Maar de bas en de gitaren hadden soms wat meer ‘body’ mogen hebben. De drumvellen lijken vrij strakgespannen, waardoor de minder ‘donderend’ klinken. Ik mis de echte warmte in de symfonische delen. Dus qua geluidskwaliteit ontbreekt er een stukje dynamiek verschil tussen rock/metal en klassiek. Daardoor is de instrumentale diepgang net niet groot genoeg. Toch is het heerlijk om het volume flink open te draaien en lekker mee te zingen. Want ‘Damnation Angels’ heeft met ‘Fiber Of Our Being’ een toegankelijke en opzwepende plaat afgeleverd, waarvan de melodieën al snel in je hoofd blijven kleven.

Damnation Angels – Fiber Of Our Being

The British symphonic metal band Damnation Angels has had a few changes in the line-up. The newest band members frontman Iggy Rod (Ignacio Rodriguez) and bassist Nic Southwood were already there during their European tour in 2015, where they were support act for Threshold. The ‘Fiber Of Our Being‘ is the first album on which this two can be heard.

The mix of metal and symphony is immediately present at the instrumental opening of this album.
When the drums come along, the rhythm of ‘More Than Human‘ is rousing. Iggy has a powerful voice and a rather clear pronunciation. The rhythm remains rousing for a while, and sometimes has a touch of pop. The background vocals are well added, and form a nice whole with the rest. This opening track is both captivating and accessible.

Also ‘Railrunner‘ has enough changes between the metal and the classical elements. Iggy can handle the power pieces as well as the classical parts fine. In the quiet parts the warmth in his voice comes into its own.

The melody of ‘Fiber Of Our Being‘ sticks nicely in your head. Because of the exhilarating build-up, you quickly can sing out loud the chorus of this title track. The guitar tears deliciously through an instrumental piece. The sudden end is surprising.

‘Our Last Light‘ has a beautiful light played and sung start. The build-up to more tempo and volume is fine. In all songs the turns go well, but the pattern of the turns itself is not very surprising. There remains a fine mix and / or alternation between rock/metal and classical. The choir vocals and/or background vocals provide a nice addition. Vocal parts are well alternated with instrumental parts, in which the tempo is sometimes quite high. Regularly there are delightful guitar solos. This all makes the songs catchy and accessible.

There is one epic on this CD, and that is ‘Remnants Of A Dying Star‘. The first few seconds are quiet; the metal is built up step by step. Suddenly the music is almost silent, and Iggy sings some sentences almost solo. When tempo and volume in vocals and music increase, the choral vocals melt nicely together with the classical influences. The mysterious piece creates a pleasant arc of tension, the predictability is gone for a moment. Although the exhilarating piece is not very original, it bursts out of the speakers very nicely. The build-up to the end is cool!

The female vocals give ‘A Sum Of Our Parts‘ a surprising intro. The warm voice of Iggy matches perfectly. In addition, his voice sounds distorted from time to time. The added sounds draw some attention away from the classical elements. This last track has a nice mix of pop rock with classic elements.

Iggy has quite a large range, his voice can handle the high notes very well. His versatile voice fits the metal as well as the classic parts. The contrasts between the forte and pianissimo, so between the loud and quiet parts is fine. But the bass and the guitars could have had some more ‘body’. The drumheads seem quite tight, which makes the less ’thundering’ sound. I miss the real warmth in the symphonic parts. So in terms of sound quality, there is missing a little bit of dynamism difference between rock/metal and classical. That’s why the instrumental depth is just not big enough. Still, it’s great to turn up the volume quite a bit, and sing along with it. So, ‘Damnation Angels‘ has delivered an accessible and exhilarating album. The melodies on ‘Fiber Of Our Being‘ will stick in your head very easily.
