The Dutch prog band 7even Bridges wants to create more awareness about PTSD worldwide, as Afghanistan veteran Erik Krikke received this diagnosis in 2013. He broke the silence with the album ‘Break the Silence’ (2018). Now the follow-up, ‘Million Voices’, is out. This concept album is dedicated to everyone who struggles with the consequences of physical and/or mental wounds. Now that Afghanistan is world news again, old wounds are ripped open again.

‘Invincible Part 1′ starts with slow, sober sounds of piano and string instruments, they hit me straight in the heart. With the sounds of acoustic guitar playing, the atmosphere becomes lighter, this is nicely complemented by wordless vocals. The sung words (by Danny Rysavy) touch me even deeper, tears burn in my eyes. These were the words of Erik’s son, when he saw Erik crying during a period of heavy reliving. Vocals and music are in perfect harmony. ‘Sky Is So Beautiful’ is easy-going, and sometimes sounds a bit sugary. The lyrics consist of a few general sentences. Yet it seems to give an insight into the contrasts of feelings that PTSD sufferers go through.

The optimistic feeling continues in ‘New Day Part 1’, the drums sound nicely full and round. The sound of the cymbals could have had a bit more body, because there is rock here. You can hear the turn to ‘New Day Part 2′, which starts subdued. Danny’s beautiful voice stands out again. The vocals of Bas Rysavy and Erik Krikke form a slightly sugary melange. In a quiet way they repeat the sentence about continuing to breathe a number of times. The changes flow into each other. Sometimes lead vocals and music have more power. Everything is in the service of the entire song, which also applies to the spoken words in the background.
‘Million Voices’ has an intriguing start, with a beautiful vocal cry. Music and vocals are convincing. The whispered words are very soft, but definitely come in. This beautifully constructed track has special twists, details and added sounds. Unnoticed, I sing along with the last lines.

The catchy beat of ‘Running Man’ forms an excellent melange with the rest of the music. With the textbook in hand, the quickly spoken words are easy to follow. The alternation with instrumental pieces makes it extra impressive. Hope/(self)confidence resounds in ‘Look at Me’. This makes you sing along with the uplifting chorus. The guitar playing sometimes reminds me of U2 from the 80s. Never Stop Dreaming’ is beautifully sung and played in peace.

‘Invincible Part 2’, with its drum intro, has a positive vibe. In ‘Best Side’, there is a beautiful alternation between fragile and more powerful vocals and music. The balance between the bright guitar playing and the sober sounds of the strings in ‘Bedtime Story’ is very good. All the different colours of voices are special. In ‘Baby Come Home’ you can hear the light, rough edge on Bas Rysavy’s voice. The wordless vocals of the optimistic ‘Invincible Part 3’ invite you to sing along.

The intro with the string instruments of ‘Turn The Page’ touches me. There is a sublime blend of high and low tones. This creates a nice balance between gloom and optimism. The spoken sentence is one to remember forever. At the very end, very briefly, the gloominess prevails… then it’s quiet… In silence, I let this album sink in.

The blend of the eight voices is special. The quality of sound is good, moreover it is well distributed over the headphones. 7even Bridges creates the ultimate balance between hope and sadness. This makes it touching, but certainly not depressing. ‘Million Voices’ is impressive, intriguing and accessible, but above all: it is one of the best albums of the year!

7even Bridges – Million Voices

De Nederlandse band 7even Bridges wil wereldwijd meer bewustzijn creëren over PTSS, want Afghanistan-veteraan Erik Krikke kreeg deze diagnose in 2013. Hij doorbrak het stilzwijgen met het album ‘Break the Silence’ (2018). Nu is de opvolger, ‘Million Voices’, uit. Dit conceptalbum is opgedragen aan iedereen die worstelt met de gevolgen van fysieke en/of mentale wonden. Nu Afghanistan weer wereldnieuws is, worden oude wonden opnieuw opengereten.

‘Invincible Part 1’ start met langzame, sobere klanken van piano en strijkinstrumenten, ze raken me recht in het hart. Met de klanken van akoestisch gitaarspel wordt de sfeer lichter, dit wordt mooi aangevuld door woordeloze zang. De gezongen woorden (door Danny Rysavy) raken me nog dieper, tranen branden in mijn ogen. Dit waren de woorden van Erik’s zoon, toen die Erik zag huilen tijdens een zware periode van herbeleving. Zang en muziek zijn in perfecte harmonie. ‘Sky Is So Beautiful’ is gemoedelijk, en kinkt soms een beetje zoet. De tekst bestaat uit een paar algemene zinnen. Toch lijkt het een inzicht te geven in de contrasten van gevoelens die PTSS-ers doormaken. Het optimistische gevoel gaat door in ‘New Day Part 1’, de drums klinken mooi vol en rond. Het geluid van de cimbalen had iets meer body mogen hebben, want hier is er rock. Je hoort de wending naar ‘New Day Part 2’, dat ingetogen begint. Weer valt de prachtige stem van Danny op. De zang van Bas Rysavy en Erik Krikke vormt een licht zoete melange. Op een rustige manier herhalen ze de zin over doorgaan met ademhalen een aantal keer. De veranderingen vloeien in elkaar over. Soms hebben leadzang en muziek meer power. Alles is in dienst van het geheel, dat geldt ook voor de gesproken woorden op de achtergrond.

‘Million Voices’ heeft een intrigerende start, met een mooie vocale kreet. Muziek en zang zijn overtuigend. De fluisterende woorden zijn heel zacht, maar komen zeker binnen. Deze prachtig opgebouwde track heeft bijzondere wendingen, details en toegevoegde geluiden. Ongemerkt zing ik mee met de laatste regels. De pakkende beat van ‘Running Man’ vormt een prima melange met de overige muziek. Met het tekstboekje in de hand zijn de vrij snel gesproken woorden goed te volgen. Door de afwisseling met instrumentale stukken is het extra indrukwekkend. Er klinkt hoop / (zelf)vertrouwen door in ‘Look at Me’. Hierdoor zing je al snel mee met het opbeurende refrein. Het gitaarspel doet me soms aan U2 van de jaren ‘80 denken. ‘Never Stop Dreaming’ is mooi rustig gezongen en gespeeld.

‘Invincible Part 2’ met zijn drumintro, heeft een positieve vibe. In ‘Best Side’ is er een prachtige afwisseling tussen breekbare en krachtigere zang en muziek. De balans tussen het heldere gitaarspel en de sobere klanken van de strijkinstrumenten in ‘Bedtime Story’ is zeer goed. Alle verschillende kleuren stemmen zijn bijzonder. In ‘Baby Come Home’ hoor je het lichte, ruwe randje op de stem van Bas Rysavy. De woordeloze zang van het optimistische ‘Invincible Part 3’ nodigt uit om mee te zingen.

Het intro met de strijkinstrumenten van ‘Turn The Page’ raakt me. Er is een sublieme melange van hoge en lage tonen. Dit zorgt voor een mooie balans tussen somberheid en optimisme. De gesproken zin is er één om voor altijd te onthouden. Op het allerlaatst overheerst, heel kort, de somberheid.. dan is het stil.. In stilte laat ik dit album bezinken.

De melange van de acht stemmen is bijzonder. Het geluid is prima van kwaliteit, bovendien is het geheel goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. 7even Bridges creëert de ultieme balans tussen hoop en verdriet. Hierdoor is het ontroerend , maar zeker niet deprimerend. ‘Million Voices’ is indrukwekkend, intrigerend en toegankelijk, maar vooral: het is één van de beste albums van het jaar!
