Tony Romero’s second album from Vortex is called ‘Zen’. The 9 instrumental tracks are mostly made for relaxation and meditation. Yet the pace in ‘Africa’ is a bit faster than expected. It contains a mix of instrumental (slightly classical) atmospheric elements and electronic sounds. In the restful epic ‘Ocean’, you won’t hear waves rustling, but detailed music, with sometimes very low tones. ‘RelaxZENation’ ends perhaps a little too abruptly. The tempo in ‘Flowstrumental’ is slightly faster than in the previous tracks, but the calm flow remains. ‘Peyote’ has a completely different atmosphere, its striking ending well chosen for this last track. The unusual (detailed) compositions and lack of predictable sampled sounds make this much more enjoyable than “standard” relaxation music. The distribution between high and low notes is good. Moreover, the sound is beautifully warm. ‘Zen’ only comes into its own when you listen in peace (with your eyes closed).

Het tweede album van Tony Romero’s Vortex heet ‘Zen’. De 9 instrumentele nummers zijn vooral gemaakt voor ontspanning en meditatie. Toch ligt het tempo in ‘Africa’ iets hoger dan verwacht. Het bevat een mix van instrumentale (licht klassieke) sfeerelementen en elektronische geluiden. In de rustgevende epic ‘Ocean’ hoor je geen ruisende golven, maar gedetailleerde muziek, met soms hele lage tonen. ‘RelaxZENation’ eindigt misschien iets te abrupt. Het tempo in ‘Flowstrumental’ ligt iets hoger dan in de voorgaande tracks, maar de rustige flow blijft. ’Peyote’ heeft een hele andere sfeer, het markante einde is goed gekozen voor dit laatste nummer. Door de bijzondere (gedetailleerde) composities en het ontbreken van voorspelbare gesampelde geluiden is dit veel mooier dan de “standaard” ontspanningsmuziek. De verdeling tussen hoge en lagen tonen is goed. Bovendien is het geluid mooi warm. ‘Zen’ komt pas tot zijn recht als je in alle rust (met gesloten ogen) luistert.
