Guitarist Brian Setzer keeps rockabilly and swing alive. In his long career, he sold millions of records and won several awards. ‘The Devil Always Collects’ is his new album, which features 11 songs. These invite you to sing along, but the high (rousing) tempo makes this far from easy. The backing vocals are sometimes predictable, but still pleasantly added. Of course, there is a lot of good and varied guitar playing to be heard. The structure of the tracks is largely verse/chorus, yet there are plenty of lovely details and/or surprises. ‘She’s Got A Lotta…Soul!’ is a bit “sweeter” at first, but guitar playing provides some rock. ‘Psycho Suzie’ is a little less surprising in terms of structure, but it is uplifting. The quieter ‘One Particular Chick’ ends very lovely. ‘The Devil Always Collects’ has everything you expect from a rock(abilly) album.

Gitarist Brian Setzer houdt de rockabilly en swing levend. In zijn lang carrière verkocht hij miljoenen platen en won diverse prijzen. ‘The Devil Always Collects’ is zijn nieuwe album, hierop staan 11 nummers. Deze nodigen uit om mee te zingen, maar dat valt door het hoge (opzwepende) tempo lang niet altijd mee. De achtergrondzang is soms voorspelbaar, maar toch leuk toegevoegd. Natuurlijk is er veel goed en gevarieerd gitaarspel te horen. De opbouw van de tracks is grotendeels couplet/refrein, maar toch zijn er volop leuke details en/of verrassingen. ‘She’s Got A Lotta…Soul!’ is in eerste instantie iets “zoeter”, maar gitaarspel zorgt voor wat rock. ‘Psycho Suzie’ is qua opbouw wat minder verrassend, maar wel opzwepend. Het rustigere “One Particular Chick’ eindigt heel leuk. ‘The Devil Always Collects’ heeft alles wat je verwacht bij een rock(abilly) album.
