Within Temptation is known for their grandiose live shows and their interaction with the fans. That’s why they initially didn’t like the idea of a live stream. Fortunately, they realized that with a pre-recorded show, you can create things that are impossible during a real live show. This is how the idea of the virtual reality show ‘The Aftermath’ was born. This is a post-apocalyptic world, in which it is not clear whether humans will survive or not. For this show, the latest techniques were used, allowing Within Temptation to explore the boundaries of the impossible.
Forsaken
The show started with images of a half-destroyed city, and the black head of a VR (Virtual Reality) character, with bright red ‘luminous’ eyes. While talking, she provided an introduction, accompanied by sombre symphonic music. After she spoke, you saw more of this city. In this surreal atmosphere, the tension built. Then Sharon den Adel sang beautifully high and clear. With the opening sentences “Now the day has come. We are forsaken this time”, people know that ‘Forsaken’ is the first song of this spectacular show. Despite the quiet start of this song, you almost didn’t know where to look. Apart from seeing a half-decomposed city, there were also several stages at different heights. Everything was so captured that it was as if you were flying through it yourself. The light show was fantastic, it was often filmed from afar. Sometimes there was so much to see in this immense setting that you could hardly see the band members. This visual spectacle was really huge. But it was all about the music, of course, and that sounded great too. They played with the same passion as on a live stage. At the very end, there was a slight echo in Sharon’s voice, but of course she sang flawlessly. This must have been a goose bumps moment for the fans.
Paradise (What about us?)
There was so much to see that it wasn’t until the second track, “Our Solemn Hour,” that I noticed that Sharon was wearing a gold piece of jewellery around her face. The band members were all on the same big stage, behind them there was a huge beamer. These images were interspersed with images of the surreal world around them. The band was also on stage together during “Paradise (What about us?)”. This was interspersed with images of guest singer Tarja Turunen. She could be seen in the distance, standing on a half-collapsed building. You heard a second singer, luckily, she was also occasionally seen on the beamer. Because the ladies look quite similar, you might have missed who the other voice belonged to because the images changed quickly. The voices matched well, which is why this duet felt very natural.
The whole thing took place in different locations of this post-apocalyptic city. This was not just a set, but a real three-dimensional city of cinematic allure. That is why the light comes from ‘all’ sides. Not only did the light beams rotate, but sometimes the light was mounted on large rotating elements. At one point, the large stage on which Within Temptation played floated above the city in ruins. This was really overwhelming, you needed more than one pair of eyes.
Shed My Skin
There was a moment of calm because the VR character spoke a few sentences before ‘The Purge’ started. In various places, you could see images of large, brightly burning fires. This show was a sequence of spectacular moments. Sharon appeared in a different outfit now and then. In ‘Entertain You’, she appeared in an impressive angel outfit. One of the guest singers was Xzibit, of course for ‘And We Run’. The stage was again at a different location in the city.
As expected, the new video for ‘Shed My Skin’ was shown. For this song, Within Temptation teamed up with German metalcore band Annisokay. The official video was released on July 14th, it was and is available for everyone to watch on You Tube. Although this is not even the most grand song, it does give an impression of how gigantic the show was. After the beautiful ‘Mother Earth’ (in duet form), it seemed as if you had entered a surreal universe. ‘The Reckoning’ has a quiet start, the light joined in. Still, this was impressive too. Even if you didn’t know the song, you could tell by the light that the song was about to end.
Until we meet again
In ‘Supernova’, the light seemed like a moving work of art that was constantly changing shape. You saw not only straight rays but also curved beams and circles that generally moved slowly. During subdued music, Sharon spoke a few sentences, after which ‘Stairway to the Skies’ was started. The setting was still in the fictional universe, and again the light was a moving piece of art. Fans could sing along with this accessible song from beginning to end, and they surely did. This song also has a nice build up to the end. Sharon curtsied and said “Until we meet again.” Then you saw the logo of ‘The Aftermath’ with the corresponding background. Then the screen went black, there was no end credits, and no music could be heard. This sudden end was the only downside of the show. Not only for the fans who had black screen in no time. But also for the complete crew, everyone should be mentioned by name. Because this was an enormous visual spectacle. This was grand plus impressive, and that squared. It would be a fantastic experience to see this in a cinema. The show was available for streaming for 48 hours, then no more. ‘The Aftermath’ was far too beautiful to be seen for such a short period of time. I’m sure there will be a DVD/Blue Ray of this. Within Temptation has more than lived up to the expectations, the expectations have even been exceeded by far!

Within Temptation – ‘The Aftermath’ was een adembenemend spektakel.
Within Temptation staat bekend om hun groots opgezette live shows, en hun interactie met de fans. Daarom zagen ze een live stream in eerste instantie niet zitten. Gelukkig realiseerde ze zich dat je met een van te voren opgenomen show dingen kunt laten zien die tijdens een echte live show onmogelijk zijn. Zo ontstond het idee van de virtuele reality show ‘The Aftermath’. Dit is een post-apocalyptische wereld, waarin het niet duidelijk is of de mens wel of niet zal overleven. Voor deze show zijn de allernieuwste technieken gebruikt, zo kon Within Temptation de grenzen van het onmogelijke opzoeken.

De show begon met beelden van een halfvergane stad, en het zwarte hoofd van een VR (Virtueel Reality) personage, met fel rode ‘lichtende’ ogen. Al pratend zorgde zij voor een inleiding, begeleid door sombere symfonische muziek. Nadat zij uitgesproken was, zag je meer van deze stad. In deze surrealistische sfeer werd de spanning opgebouwd. Daarna zong Sharon den Adel prachtig hoog en helder. Met de openingszinnen “Now the day has come
We are forsaken this time” weet men dat ‘Forsaken’ het eerste nummer van deze spectaculaire show is. Ondanks de rustige start van dit nummer, wist je bijna niet waar je moest kijken. Behalve dat er een half vergane stad te zien was, waren er ook nog diverse podia op verschillende hoogtes. Alles was zo in beeld gebracht dat het leek of je er zelf doorheen vloog. De lichtshow was fantastisch, deze werd regelmatig van veraf in beeld gebracht. Soms was er zo veel te zien op deze immense setting, dat je de bandleden amper zag. Dit visuele spektakel was werkelijk megagroot opgezet. Maar het ging natuurlijk om de muziek, en ook dat klonk geweldig. Ze speelden met dezelfde bezieling als op een live podium. Helemaal op het laatst zat er een lichte echo op Sharon’s stem, natuurlijk zong ze loepzuiver. Dit was vast een kippenvel momentje voor de fans.

Er was zo veel te zien dat het me pas bij het tweede nummer, ‘Our Solemn Hour’, opviel dat Sharon een goudkleurig sieraad om haar gezicht droeg. De bandleden stonden allemaal op hetzelfde grote podium, achter hun was er een enorm grote beamer. Er werd geschakeld tussen deze beelden en de surreële wereld om hun heen. Ook tijdens ‘Paradise (What about us?)’ stond de band gezamenlijk op het podium. Dit werd afgewisseld met beelden van gastzangeres Tarja Turunen. Zij was in de verte te zien, staand op een half ingestorte gebouw. Je hoorde een tweede zangeres , gelukkig was ze ook af en toe op de beamer te zien. Omdat de dames best wel op elkaar lijken, en omdat de beelden snel wisselden, zou je zomaar gemist kunnen hebben bij wie de andere stem hoorde. De stemmen pasten goed bij elkaar, daarom voelde dit duet heel natuurlijk aan.
Het geheel speelde zich af op verschillende locaties van deze post-apocalyptische stad. Dit was niet zomaar een decor, maar een heus drie dimensionale stad van filmische allure. Daarom kwam het licht van ‘alle’ kanten. Niet alleen de lichtbundels draaiden, maar soms was het licht op grote draaiende elementen gemonteerd. Op een gegeven moment zweefde het grote podium waarop Within Temptation speelde boven de stad die in puin ligt. Dit was echt overweldigend, je kwam ogen te kort.
Shed My Skin
Er was even een rustmomentje want het VR personage sprak enkele zinnen voordat
‘The Purge’ van start ging. Op diverse plaatsen zag je beelden van grote, fel brandende vuren. Deze show was een aaneenschakeling van spectaculaire momenten. Sharon verscheen af en toe in en andere outfit. In ‘Entertain You’ verscheen ze in een imposante engel outfit. Eén van de gastzangers was Xzibit, natuurlijk voor ‘And We Run’. Het podium stond weer op een andere locatie in de stad. Zoals verwacht werd de nieuwe video van ‘Shed My Skin’ getoond. Voor dit nummer ging Within Temptation een samenwerkingsverband met de Duitse metalcoreband Annisokay aan. Op 14 juli kwam de officiële video uit, deze was en is voor iedereen te bekijken op You Tube. Hoewel dit niet eens het meest groots opgezette nummer is, geeft het wel een indruk van hoe giga groot de show was. Na het prachtige ‘Mother Earth’ (in duet vorm), leek het wel of je in een surrealistisch heelal was gekomen. The Reckoning’ heeft een rustige start , het licht sloot hier bij aan. Toch was ook dit indrukwekkend. Zelfs als je het nummer niet kende, zag je aan het licht dat het nummer ging eindigen.
Until we meet again
Het licht leek in ‘Supernova’ wel een bewegend kunstwerk dat steeds van vorm veranderde. Je zag niet alleen rechte stralen, maar ook gebogen lichtbundels en cirkels die over het algemeen langzaam bewogen. Tijdens ingetogen muziek sprak Sharon enkele zinnen, waarna ‘Stairway to the Skies’ ingezet werd. De setting was nog steeds in het fictieve heelal, en het licht was weer een bewegend kunstwerk. Fans kunnen dit toegankelijke nummer van begin tot eind meezingen, en dat hebben ze vast gedaan. Ook dit nummer heeft een mooie opbouw naar het einde. Sharon maakte een buiging en zei “Until we meet again.” Vervolgens zag je nog even het logo van ‘The Aftermath’ met de bijbehorende achtergrond. Daarna ging het beeld op zwart, er was geen aftiteling te zien, en geen muziek meer te horen. Dit plotselinge eind was het enige minpuntje van de show. Niet alleen voor de fans die in no time zwart beeld hadden. Maar ook voor de complete crew, iedereen mag best met naam genoemd worden. Want dit was een enorm visueel spektakel. Dit was groots plus imposant, en dat in het kwadraat. Het zou een fantastische beleving zijn om dit in een bioscoop te zien. De show was 48 uur te streamen, daarna niet meer. ‘The Aftermath’ was veel te mooi om maar zo kort te kunnen zien. Hier zal vast wel een DVD/Blue Ray van uitkomen. Within Temptation heeft de verwachtingen meer dan waar gemaakt, de verwachtingen zijn zelfs ruimschoot overtroffen!
