Singer Phil Bee won several Dutch Blues Awards. He was also singer of the Jan Akkerman band and toured with Steve Lukather, among others. He won the Voice Senior (2021) and was a finalist at The Tribute, Battle of the Bands (2024). On the first Sunday of March, Phil Bee and band performed at De Bosuil in Weert. But this sunny afternoon started with the performance of Luca & Uncle Rudi. Guitarist Luca Holkenborg is 14 years old, but has already been on stage with several well-known blues guitarists, including Danny Bryant.
Luca & Uncle Rudi
Luca appeared in worn-out jeans, panther blouse, dreads and hat. He played the funky ‘Funky guitar blues’ very easily. Saartje Doumen’s voice fitted perfectly with the covers they played. You could see that Luca was feeling the music, he was soloing quite well. Most of the time he played with his eyes closed, hardly seeking eye contact with the audience or the band. Still, the subtle non verbal communication between the band members was fine. During the intro of ‘I was wrong’, Dominique Christens (ex The BluesBones) drummed beautifully softly. Luca smiled shyly at the interim applause he received. Bassist Ronald Burssens (ex The BluesBones) also kept an eye on what Luca was doing.
Not in all songs was keyboardist Harry van Doorn heard well enough. Despite Luca’s very good guitar playing, the atmosphere on stage remained a bit dull. In performance Luca will still grow, with his guitar playing he definitely impressed the audience. He mastered the tempo and volume changes well. During the subdued parts, the audience was quiet. Before the first note was played, Phil greeted the audience. People spontaneously sang along with ‘Come together’. Pascal Lanslots played a beautiful tune on his Hammond, which was rewarded with applause. Not only covers, but also own songs were played. Including ‘Wheels of emotion’, a song about a broken relationship. Phil showed emotion in both his voice and with physical expression. The same was true during the instrumental pieces.
Where necessary, the band played and performed subdued. For instance in ‘I love you more’, ‘Arie Verhaar’ drummed appropriately softly. The slightly rough edge on Phil’s voice came into its own, his vocal outbursts were fine. Wherever they could, the fun shone off, and joy was in the air. Bassist Marco Oonincx and guitarist Niels van der Steenhoven regularly played side by side. Niels played the stars from heaven, but Marco’s bass playing was also very good. The sheer was also evident in ‘Just wanna love you’ and ‘Whippin’ Post’, especially the build-up to the latter mentioned song was impressive. Phil and band visibly felt at home in De Bosuil. Between some songs, he spontaneously (in Limburgian) told them something.
Live – At Tivoli – Vredenburg
Phil played some songs from his Award winning album ‘Live – At Tivoli – Vredenburg’, including the mellow ‘Sunday morning’. The set was well varied, both in terms of own songs and covers. And up-tempo/rock versus touchy tracks. For example, ‘Crosstown Traffic’, and ‘Many rivers to cross’. And ‘The letter’ versus ‘One last kiss’. Before the start of this song, which is about loss, Phil asked for absolute silence. When it was quiet, this song started with Hammond and compelling guitar playing. Phil sang convincingly, you felt the pain of loss. Not only in singing, but also in the music, the emotion was felt.
After this, people spontaneously sang along with ‘You are so beautiful’. Followed by the last song: ‘Got together’. Pascal meanwhile stood behind his Hammond, Niels stood in front of him. They fired each other up and sparkled with joy. So was Marco, with his groovy bass playing. Arie played with a smile from ear to ear. The audience responded enthusiastically.

To the delight of the fans, Phil announced that Luca was coming to play along during the encore. First they played ‘Tennessee whiskey’. Niels started on guitar, Luca joined in. Again the applause made him shy. The audience sang along softly and respectfully, which was appreciated by Phil. The subdued part Luca played compellingly. After that, he seemed to play a little ahead of the music for a while. But during the minimalist part, he was back to being one with the other musicians. This ballad was rewarded with generous applause.
After a few jokes by Phil, the intro of ‘Big legged woman’ sounded. The band’s enjoyment had a positive effect on Luca; he too started to be lively. He moved with the flow of the music. Instrumentally too, he seemed more courageous.
It was beautiful to see and feel the power of music like this. Luca was in tune with the band, as if they had been playing together for years. This delightfully pleasant long version was a perfect finale. Time had flown by, yet Phil Bee and band had played for over two hours. De stem van Saartje Doumen paste prima bij de covers die ze speelden. Je kon zien dat Luca de muziek voelde, hij soleerde prima. Hij speelde meestal met gesloten ogen, en zocht nauwelijks oogcontact met het publiek of de band. Toch verliep de subtiele non verbale communicatie tussen de bandleden prima. Tijdens het intro van ‘I was wrong’ drumde Dominique Christens (ex The BluesBones) mooi zacht. Luca lachte verlegen om het tussentijdse applaus dat hij kreeg. Ook bassist Ronald Burssens (ex The BluesBones) hield goed in de gaten wat Luca deed.
Niet in alle nummers was toetsenist Harry van Doorn goed genoeg te horen. Ondanks het zeer goede gitaarspel van Luca, bleef de sfeer op het podium een beetje mat. In de performance zal Luca nog groeien, met zijn gitaarspel heeft hij beslist indruk gemaakt op het publiek. Hij beheerste de tempo- en volumewisselingen goed. Tijdens de ingetogen delen was het publiek stil. Luca & Uncle Rudi was absoluut een prima support act.

Voordat de eerste noot gespeeld werd, begroette Phil de aanwezigen. Men zong spontaan mee met ‘Come together’. Pascal Lanslots speelde een mooi stuk op zijn Hammond, wat met applaus beloond werd. Er werden niet alleen covers, maar ook eigen nummers gespeeld. Waaronder ‘Wheels of emotion’, een nummer over een stukgelopen relatie. Phil toonde emotie in zowel zijn stem als met fysieke expressie. Dit laatste had hij ook tijdens de instrumentale stukken.
Daar waar het nodig was speelde en performde de band ingetogen. Bijvoorbeeld in ‘I love you more’ drumde ‘Arie Verhaar’ speelde passend zacht. Het licht ruwe randjes op Phil’s stem kwam prima tot zijn recht, zijn vocale uithalen waren prima. Daar waar het kon, straalde het plezier er van af, en werd er lol gemaakt. Bassist Marco Oonincx en gitarist Niels van der Steenhoven stonden regelmatig zij aan zij te spelen. Niels speelde de sterren van de hemel, maar het basspel van Marco was ook zeer goed. Het plezier was ook te zien in ‘Just wanna love you’ en ‘Whippin’ Post’, vooral de opbouw van dit laatste genoemde nummer was indrukwekkend. Phil en band voelden zich zichtbaar thuis in De Bosuil. Tussen enkele nummers door vertelde hij (in het Limburgs) op spontane manier iets.

Hierna zong men spontaan mee met ‘You are so beautiful’. Gevolgd door het laatste nummer: ‘Got together’. Pascal stond inmiddels achter zijn orgel, Niels stond tegenover hem. Ze vuurden elkaar aan en straalden van plezier. Dat gold ook voor Marco, met zijn groovy basspel. Arie speelde met een smile van oor tot oor. Het publiek reageerde enthousiast.

Tot groot genoegen van de fans kondigde Phil aan dat Luca mee kwam spelen tijdens de toegift. Als eerste speelden ze ‘Tennessee whiskey’. Niels begon op gitaar, Luca viel bij. Weer werd hij verlegen van het applaus. Het publiek zong zacht en respectvol mee, dit werd gewaardeerd door Phil. Het ingetogen deel speelde Luca meeslepend. Daarna leek hij even een beetje op de muziek vooruit te spelen. Maar tijdens het minimalistische deel, was hij weer één met de andere muzikanten. Deze ballad werd met een royaal applaus beloond.
Na enkele grapjes van Phil klonk het intro van ‘Big legged woman’. Het plezier van de band had een positieve uitwerking op Luca, ook hij begon te stralen. Hij bewoog mee met de flow van de muziek. Ook instrumentaal leek hij meer te durven.
Het was mooi om de kracht van muziek zo te zien en te voelen. Luca zat op één lijn met de band, alsof ze al jaren samen speelde. Deze heerlijke aangename lange versie was een perfect afsluiter. De tijd was omgevlogen, toch hadden Phil Bee en band ruim twee uur gespeeld. Er staan de komende maanden veel optredens voor de Phil Bee Cocker Band gepland.
