Before the Corona crisis also took hold of the Netherlands and Belgium, Made in Purple had already played at De Bosuil. This Belgian Deep Purple tribute band was founded by guitarist Bert Verschueren. He is a teacher at the Royal Conservatoire in Antwerp, together with some colleagues he performed Sunday afternoon 12 September in De Bosuil. Because of the Corona restrictions, it was a “seated” concert. The afternoon began with a solo performance by singer/guitarist Chris Bay. At the end of the last century, this German founded the metal band Freedom Call. Over three years ago, he launched his first soloalbum ‘Chasing The Sun’.

Metal is for everyone
The lights went out and Chris started with ‘111’. His voice cracked a few times, but it was a nice subdued version of the up-tempo song by Freedom Call. He and his band regularly perform at big festivals, such as ‘Wacken Open Air’. Despite the forced corona setting in De Bosuil, it was clear that he was used to performing on stage. During the second song, ‘Union Of The Strong’, he encouraged the audience to clap along, and they did. He told that he had performed twice in De Bosuil with Freedom Call. Then he played ‘Metal is for Everyone’ and asked the audience to sing and clap along. The clapping went well, the singing less so, apparently the audience was not familiar with the song. Chris made a joke out of it and said: “You’re so good”, which was followed by laughter. Now and then he told something, for example that he played everything live and nothing was pre recorded.

Poison
Chris played some covers, including ‘Run to the hills’ by Iron Maiden, which he did with conviction. Now the audience sang along a bit louder with the chorus. Of course they recognized the intro of ‘Poison’. Chris held both his hands in the air and you could hear guitar sounds. Jokes like that were woven into the show.
Warriors’ (Freedom Call) has been streamed millions of times, this acoustic version was sung with emotion and passion. Most of the audience listened breathlessly. Except at the back, there was a lot of chatter. Also during ‘Nothing else matters’, this cover Chris performed very well. On his own, he knew how to entertain the audience.

Made in Purple
Made in Japan’ (1972) is one of the best albums of Deep Purple, and is still a source of inspiration. This album was played in its entirety, so Made in Purple started with ‘Highway star’. Pieter Jan De Paepe reached the high notes effortlessly, also instrumentally everything was fine, although in terms of performance it was still a bit timid.
Pieter van Malderen took care of the recognizable intro of ‘Child in time’ with his Hammond. Pieter Jan crawled into the music, he is not only a singer, but also an actor. You could see that in his empathy. Jean-Philippe Komac’s drumming was super tight. Bert Verschueren has a modest way of performing, but his guitar playing is phenomenal. The instrumental, up-tempo part earned applause. The quiet part was also sung and played fantastically.

Smoke on the water
During the intro of ‘Smoke on the water’, the audience clapped along. Under the encouragement of Pieter Jan they sang along with the chorus. In ‘The Mule’, Jean-Philippe treated the fans to a very extensive drum solo. The beautiful timbre of all the drums was especially striking now, particularly in the softer part. This version was extra long, the total duration was almost 10 minutes. The album was played in its entirety, but it was certainly not on “automatic pilot”. The pleasure and passion of the five musicians was obvious. They were clearly in tune with each other, and there was enough interaction. For example in ‘Strange kind of woman’. Bert improvised and Pieter Jan imitated him with wordless sounds, then the roles were reversed. There were also some jokes in it.

Space truckin’
During the cool Hammond intro of ‘Lazy’ Pieter was set beautifully in the light. During Bert’s gentle, compelling guitar playing, almost all of the visitors were completely silent. The tones Pieter Jan played on his harmonica came out well. With the modest guitar playing Bert knew how to touch a sensitive chord. The instrumental joke was perhaps a little strange. But the build-up to the end of this song was great.
Of course bassist Christophe Devisscher was clearly audible all the time, also in ‘Space truckin’. There were extras here too, such as cool and very varied Hammond playing. The minimalist part was impressive and the audience was kept quiet. After this Bert picked up another guitar, and this modest man did several stunts with it. He played with his feet, producing all kinds of special sounds from his guitar. Like a showman, he threw his guitar in the air several times, and caught it. This last song was extra long and extra special, the men received a well-deserved standing ovation.

Speed King
The encore consisted of ‘Black Night’ and ‘Speed King’. Here there was a nice interaction between Pieter Jan and Pieter. Pieter played some of the notes and Pieter Jan sang after them. Rightly so, the men received a standing ovation again, as Made in Purple made ‘Made in Japan’ even more special. Although the audience had to remain seated, they can look back on a very successful show, including good light and sound.

De lichten doofden en Chris begon met ‘111’. Zijn stem sloeg een paar keer een beetje over, toch was het een mooie ingetogen versie van het up-tempo nummer van Freedom Call. Regelmatig staat hij met zijn band op grote festivals, zoals ‘Wacken Open Air’. Ondanks de verplichte corona setting in De Bosuil, was het duidelijk dat hij gewend was om op het podium te staan. Tijdens het tweede nummer, ‘Union Of The Strong’ moedigde hij het publiek aan om mee te klappen, en dat deed men. Hij vertelde dat hij met Freedom Call twee keer in De Bosuil had opgetreden. Aansluitend speelde hij ‘Metal is for everyone’, hij vroeg aan het publiek om mee te zingen en te klappen. Het klappen lukte wel, het zingen minder, het publiek kende het nummer blijkbaar niet. Chris maakte er een grapje van en zei: ”You’re so good”, waarop gelachen werd. Af en toe vertelde hij iets, bijvoorbeeld dat hij alles live speelde en er niks van tevoren opgenomen was.

Poison
Chris speelde enkele covers, waaronder ‘Run to the hills’ van Iron Maiden, dat deed hij met overtuiging. Nu zongen de aanwezigen iets luider mee met het refrein. Natuurlijk herkende men het intro van ‘Poison’. Chris hield zijn beide handen in de lucht en je hoorde gitaarklanken. Dit soort grapjes zaten in de show verweven.
‘Warriors’ (Freedom Call) is miljoenen keer gestreamd, deze akoestische versie werd emotioneel en vol passie gezongen. Het grootste deel van het publiek luisterde ademloos toe. Behalve achterin, daar werd er vrij veel gekletst. Ook bij ‘Nothing else matters’, deze cover zette Chris zeer goed neer. In zijn eentje wist hij de aanwezigen prima te entertainen.

Made in Purple
‘Made in Japan’ (1972) is één van de beste albums van Deep Purple, en vormt nog steeds een inspiratiebron. Dit album werd integraal gespeeld, dus begon Made in Purple met ‘Highway star’. Pieter Jan De Paepe haalde moeiteloos de hoge noten, ook instrumentaal was alles prima, al was het qua performen nog een beetje voorzichtig.
Pieter van Malderen zorgde met zijn Hammond voor het herkenbare intro van ‘Child in time’. Pieter Jan kroop in de muziek, hij is niet alleen zanger, maar ook acteur. Dat was te zien aan zijn inlevingsvermogen. Het drumwerk van Jean-Philippe Komac was super strak. Bert Verschueren heeft een bescheiden manier van performen, maar zijn gitaarspel is fenomenaal. Het instrumentale, uptempo deel leverde tussentijds applaus op. Ook het rustige deel werd fantastisch gezongen en gespeeld.

Smoke on the water
Tijdens het intro van ‘Smoke on the water’ klapte het publiek mee. Onder aanmoediging van
Pieter Jan zong men het refrein mee. In ‘The Mule‘ trakteerde Jean-Philippe de fans op een zeer uitgebreide drumsolo. Vooral nu viel de mooie klankkleur van alle drums op, zeker in het zachter gespeelde deel. Deze versie werd extra lang, de totaalduur was bijna 10 minuten. Het album werd dan wel integraal gespeeld, maar het was zeker niet op de “automatische piloot”. Het plezier en de passie was te zien bij dit vijftal. Ze waren duidelijk op elkaar ingespeeld, en er was voldoende interactie. Bijvoorbeeld in ‘Strange kind of woman’. Bert improviseerde en Pieter Jan zong hem met woordeloze klanken na, daarna werden de rollen omgekeerd. Hier zaten ook enkele grapjes in verwerkt.

Space truckin’
Tijdens het gave Hammond intro van ‘Lazy’ werd Pieter mooi in het licht gezet. Tijdens het zachte, meeslepende gitaarspel van Bert waren bijna alle bezoekers muisstil. De tonen die Pieter Jan op zijn harmonica speelde kwamen goed naar voren. Met het ingetogen gitaarspel wist Bert een gevoelige snaar te raken. Het instrumentale grapje was misschien een beetje vreemd. Maar de opbouw naar het einde van dit nummer was geweldig.
Natuurlijk was bassist Christophe Devisscher de hele tijd al duidelijk te horen, zo ook in ‘Space truckin’. Ook hier waren er extra’s, zoals gaaf en zeer gevarieerd Hammondspel. Het minimalistische deel was indrukwekkend en het publiek was muisstil. Hierna pakte Bert een andere gitaar, waarmee deze bescheiden man diverse “stunts” uithaalde. Hij speelde met zijn voeten, zo toverde hij allerlei bijzondere geluiden uit zijn gitaar. Als een showman gooide hij zijn gitaar een aantal keer in de lucht, en ving hem op. Dit laatste nummer werd extra lang en extra speciaal, de mannen kregen een welverdiende staande ovatie.

Speed King
De toegift bestond uit ‘Black Night’ en ‘Speed King’. Hier was er een leuke wisselwerking tussen Pieter Jan en Pieter. Waarbij Pieter enkele noten speelde, en Pieter Jan ze nazong. Terecht kregen de mannen weer een staande ovatie, want Made in Purple maakte ‘Made in Japan’ nog specialer. Hoewel het publiek moest blijven zitten, kan men terugkijken op een zeer geslaagde show, inclusief goed licht en geluid.
