King King needs no introduction; this blues-rock band has performed several times at De Bosuil (Weert) over the past decades. Another performance was scheduled for Thursday 13 November, which was well attended.
Who might need an introduction is the Belgian indie folk rock band Heartland Drive. Last year, they released their debut album, Boys Of Yesteryear. They played a number of songs from this album.

Heartland Drive
The instrumental intro to “Better Off” was calm. The transition to a louder part was well done. The pleasant voice of guitarist/frontman Steven Vergauwen blended well with the backing vocals of guitarist Tim Toegaert, keyboardist Pedro Gordts, and bassist Moreno Claes. Slowly, Steven’s guitar playing became rougher, rougher than you might initially expect. In “Patchwork”, he used a bottleneck. The emotion on his face was regularly visible.
Each song contained surprising elements and various changes in tempo and/or volume. Drummer Eric Bosteels also went along with this. This could be heard in “Boys”, for example, where he played beautifully softly when needed. Anyone who follows the Belgian “Down the Road” will have recognised “Great Wide Open”. After “Runner Up”, the 45 minutes were already past, and the band left the stage. Heartland Drive made a good (first) impression, both instrumentally and vocally.

King King
Although the support from Heartland Drive was appreciated, people had mainly come for King King. After a brief but enthusiastic greeting from frontman Alan Nimmo, the band started with “More than I can take”. Vocally, he was occasionally assisted by his brother Stevie, keyboardist Jonny Dyke and bassist Zander Greenshields. From the very beginning, it was clear that King King was looking forward to this evening.

Alan moved energetically to the rousing rhythm of “Let Love In”. Fans sang softly along to the chorus, but at Alan’s command, they sang louder. Stevie also played his guitar parts very good. Fans immediately recognised the intro to “Waking Up” and clapped along. Jon Lodge could have been given a little more light, but his drumming didn’t suffer in the slightest!

Strong
It wasn’t just old familiar songs that were played; “Strong” is a new (pleasantly long) song. There was a slight echo on Alan’s voice, and the first few lines were clear. When the music got louder, Alan definitely had enough volume. Still, the music was a bit too loud to understand all the words. You could feel the emotion with which he played, and a moment later he was playing facing Stevie. This cool, extensive instrumental piece was rewarded with extra applause. Just before the end, Alan sang almost solo.
Alan dedicated “A Long History of Love” to all the loyal fans, who of course immediately recognised the organ intro. Once again, the blend of voices in the harmony was striking. Alan praised Jonny, who played his part in this instrumental piece very sensitively, and was beautifully lit. 
He deservedly received applause during the piece. When Alan rejoined with his guitar, he too was beautifully lit. Together with a wisp of smoke, this came into its own. The audience enjoyed it, including the minimalist part, and almost everyone in the venue was silent. Alan sang softly but intensely; it was such a beautiful moment. The tempo and volume were pushed up again, before finishing very quietly.


Cried Out for Love
The set was varied, because for “Cried Out for Love” and “Hurricane” the tempo increased again. “Lay With Me” is not often played, but on this evening the audience was treated to this special song.
‘You Stopped the Rain’ started with a cappella vocals. This was one of the crowd-pleasers, with the audience singing along to ‘Ohhoho’. The band members thoroughly enjoyed this. The atmosphere was already good, but it got even better! This flowed smoothly into the subdued intro of “Rush Hour”, one of many people’s favourite songs. Once again, there was a pleasant interaction between the band and the fans. Alan introduced the band, making obvious that the concert was almost over. But first they played “I Will Not Fall” (from the album “Maverick”). This song, with its touching lyrics, was also played convincingly. Stevie’s guitar playing was superb. The whole band played passionately. When the men left the stage, the crowd called for more. That call was answered with “Find Your Way Home”, which closed this fantastic evening.

King King was zoals altijd, zeer goed in De Bosuil

King King heeft geen introductie meer nodig, deze blues-rock band heeft in de afgelopen decennia al diverse keren opgetreden in De Bosuil (Weert). Donderdag 13 november stond er weer een optreden gepland, dat druk bezocht werd.
Wie misschien wel introductie nodig heeft, is de Belgische Indie Folk Rock band Heartland Drive. Vorig jaar kwam hun debuutalbum ‘Boys Of Yesteryear’ uit. Van dit album speelden ze een aantal nummers.

Heartland Drive
Het instrumentale intro van ’Better Off, was kalm. De wending verandering naar meer volume was goed. De aangename stem van Gitarist/ frontman Steven Vergauwen mengde goed samen met de stemmen van de backing vocals van gitarist Tim Toegaert, toetsenist Pedro Gordts, en bassist Moreno Claes. Langzaam werd het gitaarspel van Steven ruiger, ruiger dan je in eerste instantie zou verwachten. In ‘Patchwork’ gebruikte hij een bottleneck. Regelmatig was de emotie op zijn gezicht zien.
In ieder nummer zaten verrassende elementen en verschillende veranderingen in tempo en/of volume. Ook drummer Eric Bosteels ging hierin mee. Dat was onder andere te horen in ‘Boys’, daar waar het moest speelde hij mooi zacht. Wie het Belgische ’Down the road’ volgt, herkende ‘Great wide open’. Na ‘Runner up’ waren de drie kwartier alweer voorbij, en verliet de band het podium. Heartland Drive heeft zowel instrumentaal als vocaal een goede (eerste) indruk gemaakt.

King King
Hoewel de support van ‘Heartland Drive’ gewaardeerd werd, was men vooral voor King King gekomen. Na een korte , maar enthousiaste begroeting van frontman Alan Nimmo begon de band met ‘More than I can take’. Vocaal werd hij af en toe bijgestaan door zijn broer Stevie, toetsenist Jonny Dyke en bassist Zander Greenshields. Vanaf het prille begin was het te merken dat King King zin had in deze avond.

Alan bewoog volop mee met het opzwepende ritme van ‘Let Love In’. Fans zongen zacht mee met het refrein, maar op “commando” van Alan zong men luider. Stevie speelde ook een gaaf stuk gitaarspel.
Fans herkende direct het intro van ‘Waking up’, en klapten mee. Jon Lodge had iets meer in het licht gezet mogen worden, maar zijn drumspel leed daar allerminst onder!

Strong
Er werden niet alleen maar oude bekende nummers gespeeld, ’Strong’ is een nieuw (aangenaam lang) nummer. Op Alan’s stem zat even een lichte galm, de eerste zinnen waren woord voor woord te verstaan. Toen de muziek luider werd, had Alan zeker volume genoeg. Toch was de muziek iets te luid om alle woorden te verstaan. Je voelde de emotie waarmee hij speelde, even later stond hij tegenover Stevie te spelen. Dit gave, uitgebreide instrumentale stuk werd met een extra applaus beloond. Vlak voor het einde zong Alan bijna solo.
Alan droeg ‘A Long History of Love’ op aan alle trouwe fans, die het orgel-intro natuurijk meteen herkende. Weer viel in de samenzang de blend van de stemmen positief op. Alan roemde Jonny, deze speelde zijn aandeel in dit instrumentale stuk heel gevoelig, hij werd hierbij mooi belicht. Terecht kreeg hij een tussentijds applaus. Toen Alan er weer bij kwam met gitaar, werd ook hij mooi in het licht gezet. Samen een vleugje rook, kwam dit extra goed tot zijn recht. Het publiek genoot, ook van het minimalistische deel, bijna iedereen in de zaal was stil. Alan zong zacht maar intens, dit was zo’n mooi moment. Tempo en volume werden weer omhoog gestuwd, om daarna weer heel zacht te eindigen.



Cried Out for Love
De set was gevarieerd, want voor ‘Cried Out for Love’ en ‘Hurricane’ ging het gas er weer op. ‘Lay With Me’ wordt niet vaak gespeeld, maar op deze avond werd het publiek getrakteerd op dit bijzonder nummer.
‘You Stopped the Rain’ startte met a-capella zang. Dit was één van de sfeermakers waarbij het publiek “Ohhoho” meezong. Dit groot plezier van de bandleden. De sfeer was al goed, maar werd nòg beter! Dit vloeiende mooi over naar het ingetogen intro van ‘Rush Hour’, voor velen één van de favoriete nummers. Weer was er een leuke interactie tussen de band en de fans. 
Alan stelde de band voor, dat maakte duidelijk dat het concert bijna voorbij zou zijn. Maar eerst speelden ze ‘I Will Not Fall’ (van het album ‘Maverick’). Ook dit nummer, met zijn gevoelige tekst, werd overtuigend gespeeld. Het gitaarspel van Stevie was super. De hele band speelde vurig. Toen de mannen het podium verlieten, werd er geroepen om meer. Dat werd ‘Find Your Way Home, hiermee eindigde deze fantastische avond.
