John Mitchell is known from prog bands such as It Bites, Arena, Frost*, Kino, and last but not least his band Lonely Robot. On the day storm Pia raged across the Netherlands, he gave an acoustic concert in De Pul (Uden). He did this together with the versatile Jez Fielder. Among other things, he is a singer, guitarist and storyteller.
There was some uncertainty about whether the concert could go ahead, as it was reported on Face Book that John has voice and throat problems. Fortunately, thanks to a visit to a doctor, the concert could go ahead! Attendance was a bit disappointing, but perhaps that is because it is almost Christmas.
It Bites
Even before a single note had been sung, the atmosphere was convivial. John started narrating and made some jokes. He announced ‘Man in the Photograph’ by the band It Bites. He sang first, there was a slight rough edge to his voice. Jez also played guitar, in addition he had the backing vocals. Their voices formed a lovely blend. From the same band is “Stil too young to remember”. A few hesitantly sang “Nanana” along. During the cover ‘Time after Time’, John’s coldness came out a bit more. Jez’s vocal part was extra welcome. The guitar teamwork was very good in all songs. Because of their non-verbal communication, the (sudden) turns went well.
Frost*
Between songs, John and Jez made (instrumental) jokes. John in particular told various anecdotes at high speed. Sometimes he skiped from one subject to another. You had to be good at English to be able to understand everything. Moreover, you had to know quite a lot of musicians and bands to understand certain jokes. His “tales” regularly lasted longer than the songs. This was not bothering, as it was generally funny.
‘Perfect Tense’ was followed by a number of stories and jokes. Next, the two played ‘Black Light Machine’ by Frost*. Thanks in part to throat pastilles, his voice was preserved. Still, you could hear that he wasn’t singing easily. His guitar playing did not undergo at all. When it was necessary for the songs, the men were serious. But as soon as they could, it was mainly Jez who was lively and “crazy”. This happened, for instance, during ‘Ghosts’.
John told one or more anecdotes about a couple of musicians. John Wetton was featured several times. His ‘Battle Lines’ was played. You could feel the emotion with which he played and sang.
Lonely Robot
On this evening, a song by Lonely Robot was not to be missed. John had chosen ‘Lonely Robot’ from the album ‘Please Come Home’ (2015). This contained beautiful, instrumental pieces, in which Jez also used his voice as an instrument at times. The audience enjoyed, and listened intently. Hardly anyone sang along, and if anyone sang along, it was very quietly and respectfully.
A few more songs were played, always interspersed with one or more of John’s stories. Jez responded with a funny answer and/or a question. Sometimes a short dialogue developed, usually with a giggle. The atmosphere was and remained very convivial, almost homely.
The last song was announced, this one being ‘Life on Mars?’. Jez was playing guitar, and without guitar John was singing. He managed the high notes, and vocal outbursts quite well.
AHA
The men left the stage, the audience clapped for an encore. It wasn’t very loud, but it was convincing. Once back on stage, John again talked about his sister, which is how he ended up with AHA and ‘Take on me’. It was nice to hear an acoustic version of this hit. The guitar playing was surprisingly fast at times. Even with this well-known song, there was hardly any singing along from the audience. Thus, this became a very special duet. The high notes were sung by both Jez and John. His voice had survived. In a couple of songs, it could be heard that John was a little weaker in voice. People were appreciative that he did not cancel the performance. Soon after the performance, visitors went home, feeling content.

Op de dag dat storm Pia over Nederland raasde gaf hij een akoestisch concert in De Pul (Uden). Dit deed hij samen met de veelzijdige Jez Fielder. Hij is onder andere zanger, gitarist en storyteller.
Het was nog even spannend of het concert door kon gaan, want op Face Book was te lezen dat John stem-en keel problemen heeft. Dankzij een bezoek aan een arts kon het concert gelukkig doorgaan! Het aantal bezoekers viel wat tegen, maar dat komt misschien omdat het bijna kerst is.
It Bites
Nog voordat er maar één noot gezongen was, was de sfeer al gemoedelijk. John begon met vertellen en maakte wat grapjes. Hij kondigde ‘Man in the Photograph’ van de band It Bites aan. Hij zong als eerste, er zat een licht ruw randje op zijn stem. Ook Jez speelde gitaar, daarnaast had hij de achtergrondzang. Hun stemmen vormden een mooie blend. Van dezelfde band is ‘Stil too young to remember’. Een enkeling zong “Nanana” aarzelend mee. Tijdens de cover ‘Time after Time’ kwam de verkoudheid van John wat meer naar voren. Het vocale aandeel van Jez was extra welkom. Het samenspel van gitaar was erg in alle liedjes goed. Door hun non-verbale communicatie verliepen de (plotselinge) wendingen goed.
Frost*
Tussen de nummers door maakten John en Jez (instrumentale) grapjes. Vooral John vertelde in hoog tempo diverse anekdotes. Soms sprong hij een beetje van de hak op de tak. Je moest goed in Engels zijn, om alles te kunnen volgen. Bovendien moest je best veel muzikanten en bands kennen om bepaalde grapjes te kunnen begrijpen. Zijn “vertelsels” duurden regelmatig langer dan de nummers. Storend was het niet, want over het algemeen was het wel grappig.
Na ‘Perfect Tense’ volgde er een aantal verhalen en grapjes. Vervolgens speelde dit tweetal ‘Black Light Machine’ van Frost*. Mede dankzij keelpastilles bleef zijn stem bewaard. Toch hoorde je dat het zingen hem niet gemakkelijk af ging. Zijn gitaarspel leed er allerminst onder. Als het nodig was voor de liedjes, waren de mannen serieus. Maar zodra het kon was het vooral Jez die beweeglijk was en “gek” deed. Dat gebeurde bijvoorbeeld tijdens ‘Ghosts’.
John vertelde over aan aantal muzikanten één of meerdere anekdotes. John Wetton kwam meerdere keren aan bod. Van hem werd ‘Battle Lines’ gespeeld. Je voelde de emotie waarmee er gespeeld en gezongen werd.
Lonely Robot
Op deze avond mocht een nummer van Lonely Robot niet ontbreken. John had voor
‘Lonely Robot’ van het album ‘Please Come Home’ (2015) gekozen. Dit bevatte mooie, instrumentale stukken, waarin Jez zijn stem soms ook als instrument gebruikte. Het publiek genoot, en luisterde aandachtig. Bijna niemand zong mee, en als er iemand meezong, dan was het heel zachtjes en respectvol.
Er werden nog een paar nummers gespeeld, steeds afgewisseld met één of meerdere verhalen van John. Jez reageerde met een grappig antwoord en/of een vraag. Soms ontstond er een korte dialoog, meestal met een lach. De sfeer was en bleef heel gemoedelijk, bijna huiselijk.
Het laatste nummer werd aangekondigd, dit was ’Life on Mars?’. Jez speelde gitaar, zonder gitaar stond John te zingen. De hoge tonen, en de vocale uithalen haalde hij best wel goed.
AHA
De mannen verlieten het podium, het publiek klapte om een toegift. Het was niet heel luid, maar wel overtuigend. Eenmaal terug op de bühne vertelde John weer over zijn zus, zo kwam hij uit bij AHA en ‘Take on me’. Het was leuk om van deze hit een akoestische versie te horen. Het gitaarspel was met vlagen verrassend snel. Zelfs met dit bekende nummer werd er nauwelijks meegezongen van uit de zaal. Zo werd dit een heel speciaal duet. De hoge tonen werden zowel door Jez als door John gezongen. Zijn stem had het volgehouden. In een aantal nummers was het te horen dat John wat minder bij stem was. Men had respect dat hij het optreden niet cancelde. Na het optreden gingen de bezoekers vrij snel, maar met een tevreden gevoel naar huis.
