The Waiting Soldier

The Night

De meerstemmige zang klonk tijdens de zinnen “Where are you” emotioneel.

Achluphobia

The Last Journey

Hopelijk zien we Blank Manuskript snel terug in Nederland.

Blank Manuskript played with dedication in Willem Twee

On Sunday afternoon January 26th there was again ‘Calling Occupants’ on the program in Willem Twee, Den Bosch. This means that every month there is a prog/symfo concert here. The goal is to draw attention to less famous, but talented bands. Arne van Os van den Abeelen alias Mr Bowler (Music Agency) is the man behind this idea.
On this sunny day, Blank Manuskript got the chance to show their skills. This Artrock band from Salzburg has crossovers to jazz, among other things. They use complex rhythms and melodies.

The Waiting Soldier
In special, beautiful outfits Blank Manuskript climbed onto the small stage. Their clothes were specially designed for the album ‘The Waiting Soldier‘, which was to be played in its entirety. Of course, they started with ‘Induction‘. The quiet tones of the keys and the bass mixed with the sound of a marching army. The build-up of the song seemed a bit hesitant. Soon there was no hesitation anymore.

In between the songs there was no applause. Not because it wasn’t good, on the contrary! There wasn’t a lot of audience, but it were the real music lovers who quietly enjoyed the passion with which Blank Manuskript played. For most music freaks it was their first live experience with Blank Manuskript. And not everyone was familiar with their work. Yet, we were impressed by what these Austrians showed. All five band members had a part in the singing. Whether one man sang, or more, everything was ‘in service of the music’. It was composed and played with care.
Every now and then Jakob Sigl kept his drumsticks completely quiet. During the uptempo parts he played forte. When the music asked for it, he played extremely quietly and with precision on the cymbals.
Multi-instrumentalist Jakob Aistleitner was busy. He played saxophone, flute, electric guitar, glockenspiel, and percussion. He also handled parts of the vocals. Keyboardist Dominik Wallner sometimes seemed to be in a trance when he sang and/or played. Even within one song he regularly switched keyboards, so he showed plenty of variation.

The Night
Only after about half an hour the first applause sounded, that was after ‘The Night‘, a beautifully constructed song. Bass player Alfons Wohlmuth played nice and tight. Parts had similarities with Pink Floyd, without any feeling of a ‘copy’.

During an up-tempo piece Jakob stepped out of his corner with his saxophone and stood opposite Dominik. Guitarist Peter Baxrainer enjoyed it, and danced on this small stage, where the light was minimal. Suddenly there was a minimalist part, the people were absolutely noiseless. This gave an extra dimension. This and the other unexpected twists and turns were fantastically played. So, the first part of the concert flew past far too fast.

Krásná Hora
After the break the band appeared in a completely different outfit, again with visible care. Now the latest album, ‘Krásná Hora‘ (2019) was played integrally, it was obvious that they started with ‘Overture‘.
In the bombastic piece the organ playing could be heard well. During the subdued piece it was mainly bass, guitar and saxophone.
On the CD the minimalistic intro of ‘Foetus‘ already impressed, here it really got under your skin. The audience watched breathlessly, you could hear a pin drop, beautiful!
The harmony vocals sounded emotional during the sentences “Where are you“.

Achluphobia
The baby crying, and the minimalistic music at the start of ‘Achluphobia‘ were super. Only a few notes were played, but every note was played with the maximum care. Peter produced meticulously experimental sounds out of his guitar. Also, in this quiet piece all kinds of details were played. Super to see and hear this live. Because the audience was very quiet, it almost had an enchanting effect. Even the rests were played perfectly. After a delightful long instrumental piece, in which Alfons played his ’thick strings’ nice and slow, Dominik started to sing. A warm applause would have been very well deserved, but it would break the spell. During a beautiful minimalistic piece, you could see that Dominik was one with the music. Jakob (Aistleitner) sang without words, but this was also a nice addition. Once the last note was played, there was a well-deserved applause.
Pressure of Pride‘ was tightly played and sung, this was where the jazz clearly came to the fore.
The jazz could be heard more often, for example in ‘Alone at the Institution‘. For ‘Silent Departure‘ Alfons grabbed the bottles. The sound he produced while blowing on the bottles could be heard subtly during this quiet song.

The Last Journey
Suddenly there was more tempo and volume, it was time for ‘The Last Journey‘. Here not only Alfons played the bass, but also multi-instrumentalist Jakob. Two bass players at the same time, you don’t see that often. With this well played song this concert ended.

In a few songs the polyphonic vocals were not completely flawless. Furthermore, nothing but praise, because Blank Manuskript belongs at a prog festival, where they have the space to perform their show. Despite the lack of space on this stage, the visitors of Willem Twee were impressed by their performance. And rightly so, because all their songs are complex. But it was played so refined that it was comfortable to listen to. Hopefully we’ll see Blank Manuskript back in the Netherlands soon.
