About two years ago, a performance by Beaux Gris Gris & The Apocalypse was planned in De Bosuil (in Weert), but it had to be postponed by Covid. The band has used the past two years to make a new album. ‘Good times end times’ will be officially released at the end of March. But the album was already available during their performance on Sunday, March 20. The Sunday concerts at De Bosuil are always in the afternoon, which caused some confusion for bassist Stephen Mildwater. He was in doubt whether to greet the fans with good afternoon or good evening. Greta’s response was, “It’s never too early for rock ‘n’ roll.
Greta Valenti is a beautiful, outstanding front woman, with her own get-up. That’s why it’s always lovely to see what she’s wearing. Her clothes were semi-translucent, there were a lot of glitters on them. However beautiful she looked, people came for the music. ‘Heart breaker’ from their album ‘Love & Murder’ was the first song they played, and it sounded as good as ever! This was followed by a few “oldies” including ‘When my baby was rich’. Guitarist Robin Davey (The Hoax) played his solo right at the front of the stage. Stephen is a very energetic bass player, during an instrumental piece he was dancing with Greta. Keyboardist Emma Jonson had a calm way of performing, but you could see and feel her love for the music.
Watching the world fall down
‘Watching the world fall down’, with its catchy intro, is from the new album ‘Good times end times’. Robin, Emma and Stephen provided the backing vocals, their voices forming a nice blend. This was especially noticeable during the subdued section. From the laidback start, fans recognized ‘Thrill me’. Greta sang the first part almost in a whisper. During a minimalist piece Robin played a quiet but impressive solo, the audience became silent. When he held the neck of his guitar in the air, the volume of the music increased again and the build-up to the end followed. Drummer Mark Barrett matched his drumming perfectly to the songs. Often he played with closed eyes, as if he were completely in his own world. That changed when Greta and Stephen were dancing in face of each other during ‘Cyclone’, this was one of the moments Mark could be seen with a big smile.
Beaux Gris Gris has its own blues style, their well constructed songs contain plenty of twists in tempo and volume. These were played and sung very well. Therefore, each song was rewarded with a well-deserved applause. Greta can sing beautifully subdued, but she also has a lot of power in her voice. Moreover, her pronunciation was clear, so that the lyrics were largely understandable. She performed dynamic, in a feminine but sturdy way. Her wide flared glittering sleeves sparkled beautifully in the well-groomed light. Not only Greta looked beautiful, but the other band members had clearly taken care of their outfits as well. More importantly, they were playing well, and having fun.
Good times end times
The beautiful ‘Alone’ (from the new album) was followed by the “old” audience favourites ‘Baby baby’ and ‘Dont’ let the bastards’, which again included a great solo from Robin. The show was full of great moments, of old and new songs. The tempo of the new ‘Fill me up’ is wonderfully uplifting. Stephen encouraged people to clap along. They did, even if it sounded a little hesitant here and there. After this song Greta said: “You seem so far away”. Without hesitation people took a few steps forward. During the upbeat, new ‘Gris Gris’a few shakers were given to the attendees. Now that people were standing closer, this created an extra fun atmosphere. This song, with its tightly played ending, is sure to become a fan favourite.
Lucid
Greta asked to sing along with the chorus of ‘What’s my name’. Of course they sang along. She had already left the stage for a moment to sing among the audience, and so she did again. During an instrumental piece, she danced among the audience and looked op to Robin, who once again showed super guitar playing. It was wonderful to see the warm glances of this couple. Officially this cheerful song was the last one to be played. Of course there was an encore. The subdued instrumental start of (the new) ‘Lucid’ was a great contrast to the previous song. The atmosphere in the venue, as well as the light, changed naturally. Greta sang her words very sensitively with her eyes closed. The music remained in this pleasant flow for a while. Tempo and volume raised. With this climax the concert ended, Beaux Gris Gris had played for 1.5 hours non stop.
The mix of old and new songs was perfect. The new songs felt comfortable right away, so many fans bought the new album ‘Good times end times’ without hesitation. Beaux Gris Gris took ample time to sign the purchased album and sociolize with the fans.

Beaux Gris Gris heeft een eigen blues stijl, hun goed opgebouwde nummers bevatten volop wendingen in tempo en volume. Deze werden goed gespeeld en gezongen. Ieder nummer werd dan ook beloond met een welverdiend applaus. Greta kan prachtig ingetogen zingen, maar ze heeft ook flink wat power op haar stem. Bovendien was haar uitspraak duidelijk, waardoor de teksten grotendeels te verstaan waren. Ze was heel beweeglijk, dit deed ze op een vrouwelijke maar stoere manier. Haar wijd uitlopende glinsterende mouwen fonkelden mooi in het goedverzorgde licht. Niet alleen Greta zag er mooi uit, ook de overige bandleden hadden duidelijk zorg besteed aan hun outfit. Nog belangrijker was dat ze goed, en met plezier speelden.
Good times end times
Na het mooie ‘Alone’ (van het nieuwe album) volgden de “oude” publieks lievelingen ‘Baby baby’ en ‘Dont’ let the bastards’, waarin weer een geweldige solo van Robin zat. De show zat vol met mooie momenten, van oude en nieuwe nummers. Het tempo van het nieuwe ‘Fill me up’ is heerlijk opzwepend. Stephen moedigde de mensen aan om mee te klappen. Dat deed men, al klonk het her en der wat aarzelend. Na dit nummer zei Greta: “You seem so far away”. Zonder aarzelen deed men een paar stappen naar voren. Tijdens het vrolijke, nieuwe ‘Gris Gris’ werden er een paar shakers aan de aanwezigen gegeven. Nu men dichterbij stond, zorgde dit voor een extra leuke sfeer. Dit nummer, met zijn strak gespeelde einde, zal vast uitgroeien tot een publiekslieveling.
Lucid
Greta vroeg om mee te zingen met het refrein van ‘What’s my name?’ Natuurlijk zong men mee. Ze had al eerder het podium even verlaten om tussen het publiek te zingen, dat deed ze nu weer. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk keek ze (van uit de zaal) al dansend op naar Robin, die nogmaals super gitaarspel liet horen. Het was mooi om de warme blikken van dit echtpaar te zien. Officieel was dit vrolijke nummer het laatste dat gespeeld werd. Natuurlijk kwam er een toegift. De ingetogen instrumentale start van (het nieuwe) ‘Lucid’ vormde een groot contrast met het vorige nummer. De sfeer in de zaal ging, net als het licht, hier heel natuurlijk in mee. Greta zong met gesloten ogen haar woorden heel gevoelig. De muziek bleef een tijd in deze aangename flow. Tempo en volume werden langzaam omhoog gestuwd. Met deze climax eindigde het concert, Beaux Gris Gris had 1,5 uur non stop gespeeld.
De mix van oude en nieuwe nummers was perfect. De nieuwe nummers voelden meteen comfortabel aan, waardoor veel fans zonder aarzelen het nieuwe album ‘Good times end times’ kochten. De bandleden namen ruim de tijd om de gekochte album te signeren en te sociolizen met de fans.
