Cyril – Amenti’s Coin – Secret Place Pt. II

‘Amenti’s Coin – Secret Place Pt. II’ is the fourth album by the German prog band ‘Cyril’. It is a follow-up to ‘The secret place pt. I’ from the 2016 album ‘Paralyzed’. Omar, the main character, has a relationship with Sherin, a beautiful maidservant of a Pharaoh. He passes away; according to ancient law, Sherin must accompany him on his journey to the afterlife. She is buried in a sacred cemetery next to the Great Pyramid.

‘On Sacred Ground’ has a calm start. Pretty soon, tempo, volume and the number of layers increase. From the very first sentences, you realize that this isn’t just a general text. She is buried in a sacred cemetery next to the Great Pyramid. Pretty soon, tempo, volume and the number of layers increase. From the very first sentences, you realize that this is not just any text. Omar (sung by Larry B ) goes to Sherin’s grave. He is arrested, his death sentence scheduled for the next day. Manuel Schimd sings the lyrics of Awar (a friend o’ Omar). Both have clear pronunciations, but a lyric book would have made the story immediately clearer.

After a nice, quiet start to ‘A Letter Home,’ there is a fairly predictable build up to more pace and volume. In his cell, Omar has written a letter for his old, sick father. When Anwar reads this letter, he decides that he is going to free Omar.

After Omar is freed, he says goodbye to his father in ‘My Father’s Answer’ (also sung by Manuel). An older voice would have been more convincing, yet you can hear the warmth in father’s voice. He gives Omar a road map to the underworld, where he can find Sherin. This beautiful track flows non-stop to “Dessert Crossing. During his tough journey Omar becomes exhausted, but this is not reflected in his voice. The (multiple layers of) acoustic guitar sounds again positively stand out. The change to more tempo and volume is well chosen, a delicious proggy (instrumental) piece follows.

A cappella vocals form the transition to ‘Caravan’. The start is mysterious, Omar is found unconscious by the caravan leader Hilal. He explains when the gateway to the underworld will open. In addition, he gives Omar a special gold coin to pay Amenti, the giant gatekeeper. The “choral singing” and sound of the flute fit nicely into the quiet, instrumental section.

‘Amenti’s Coin’ is an instrumental, dreamy track. Omar continues his journey in ‘A New Shangri-La.’ He arrives at a lake and sees a beautiful woman. She invites him into her home. In ‘The Temptress’ she tries to tempt Omar to stay with her and forget about Sherin. This is framed by quiet music. The sound of the last sentences of this track do fit the music. But not with Omar’s reproachful words, as the sound is too gentle. He leaves and the track extinguishes. The intros are beautiful, and so is the duet ‘Arrival’. Omar has arrived at the cave, where he meets Amenti. For such a huge man, the voice of this guardian of the Soul Cave is too weak. This makes the duet less believable. But the voices always form a beautiful blend. Moreover, the singing and music are in harmony. After beautiful minimalist piano playing, tempo and volume increase again. The music is too loud relative to the spoken words. Although the story has an open ending, it would have been nicer if it was easier to understand.

With more different vocalists, the story would have been better brought to life. In addition, vocals and music are sometimes not intense enough to make the concept clear. Other than that, mostly pluses such as: good interaction between organ sounds and the keyboards, accessible rhythms and nice melodies. The saxophone playing is always pleasing, even if a bit predictable at times. The sound quality is good and there are many details. Moreover, the whole thing is well distributed on the headphones. ‘Amenti’s Coin – Secret Place Pt. II’ therefore is definitely an album to enjoy.

Cyril – Amenti’s Coin – Secret Place Pt. II

‘Amenti’s Coin – Secret Place Pt.

Omar vervolgt zijn reis in ‘A New Shangri-La’.
