Yuval Ron – Somewhere in This Universe, Somebody Hits a Drum (ft. Marco Minnemann)

Omdat Marco meespeelt op ‘Somewhere in This Universe, Somebody Hits a Drum’ zullen veel prog-lovers meteen nieuwsgierig worden.

Terwijl ‘WiFi in Emerald City’ steeds chaotischer verloopt.

Yuval Ron – Somewhere in This Universe, Somebody Hits a Drum (ft. Marco Minnemann)

Not everyone will know guitarist/composer Yuval Ron. But guest drummer Marco Minneman is of course a well-known one. Because Marco plays along on ‘Somewhere in This Universe, Somebody Hits a Drum‘ many prog-lovers will immediately get curious.

Somewhere in This Universe, Somebody Hits a Drum‘ starts with quiet music, the vocals consist of some sounds. The music increases a bit in volume, the vocals are still without words, but also here there is a change, especially in height.
Rhythm and melody form a nice contrast, the drumming is tight and has a somewhat march-like tempo. The melody is much freer. After a cool twist you hear all kinds of sounds. It may be a bit strange, but it’s fascinating. Somewhere in between you hear cool, fast guitar playing. Then electronic sounds come along, the tempo remains quite high. The changes in rhythm, volume and sounds remain surprising.

Also, in ‘Gravitational Lensing‘ the rhythm section plays an important role, the melody is not forgotten. Just like the opening track, there are similarities with jazz/fusion. Because of the surprising twists and turns and the special way of playing it comes across as wonderfully ‘proggy’.

Yuval uses cross overs of modern jazz-rock, among other things. The rhythms are sometimes eccentric and sometimes seem to go against each other. The structure of the melodies is also special. Besides that, there are countless twists and turns in the tracks. Some changes gradually merge into each other, others are totally unexpected. On top of that, there are a lot of details. Kuiper Belt‘ has lovely dreamy parts.
While ‘WiFi in Emerald City‘ is becoming increasingly chaotic. Because of all this, the music sometimes feels experimental. The whole thing is difficult to fathom, but fascinating. Because of this unusual structure, you have no idea how ‘The Discovery of Phoebe‘ will develop. The first part is quite quiet, yet there is enough happening here. The changes flow into each other. The guitar playing is phenomenal.
This track seems to end, but suddenly there is singing. The high voices form a nice contrast with the low bass tones. Suddenly there is a twist with rocking elements, finally you hear the more experimental side of Yuval.

‘Space-like’ sounds are part of the intro of ‘I Believe in Astronauts‘. The atmosphere is mysterious at the same time. When the drums join in, this last track takes a different course. Yet partly the same building blocks are used as in the previous tracks.
The sound of what looks like a xylophone and the rhythmic clapping of hands are remarkable.
More towards the end the countdown is like launching a rocket/spacecraft.
When the music stops a bit later, the counter on the display continues for another 20 seconds, without any ‘surprise’.

The jazz influences are a ’theme’ throughout the album. There are countless cross overs, like rock and short cinematic aspects. Because of the way it is all applied, ‘Somewhere in This Universe, Somebody Hits a Drum‘ will surely appeal to the lover of complex prog.rock as well.
