Virgil Donati behoort tot de multi-instrumentalisten in de prog wereld. Naast een fantastisch drummer, kan hij ook zeer goed met de keyboards over weg. Maar dat weten de prog heads al lang. Zij weten dat Virgil houdt van muziek die bijzonder en complex is opgebouwd, en talloze details en diverse cross overs heeft. ‘Ruinations’ is zijn zevende soloalbum. Dit album werd pas op 7 februari in Europa gelanceerd. In andere werelddelen kon men vorig jaar al van dit album genieten.

Binnen tien seconden van aanvang van ‘Castle Bastards’ is al duidelijk dat dit gaat een bijzonder album worden. In eerste instantie lijkt dit openingsnummer alle kanten uit te gaan. Virgil laat je best ‘werken’ om het allemaal bij te kunne luisteren. Het zit vol bijzondere details, extra geluiden. Bovendien lopen er verschillende stijlen door elkaar. En of het nog niet genoeg is, buitelen snelle en langzame muziek over en door elkaar heen.
De snaren en toetsen lijken soms dwars tegen elkaar in de gaan. De zwaardere muziek heeft in dit alles de overhand. Ook de enkele iets lichter gespeelde stukjes van deze instrumentale track zijn zeer ingewikkeld opgebouwd.

De zang in ‘Back To Me’ is vrij basic, dat is fijn bij deze complexe structuur. De muziek klinkt soms wat troebel, maar dat past bij de opzet. De opbouw naar het einde toe is onverwacht klein van opzet.

‘Ruination’ heeft een korte, rustige start. Hoewel tempo en volume omhooggaan, voelt het eerste deel minder complex aan om naar te luisteren. Langzaam wordt het geheel ingewikkelder.

Dit album moet duidelijk groeien, want het duurt een tijdje voordat je de nummers een beetje leert kennen en/of waarderen. In ieder nummer komt er veel op je af. Er zijn cross overs naar elektro, jazz fusion, hardrock en zelfs een vleugje metal. Deze wisselwerking verloopt soms razendsnel. Daarnaast zitten er tegenstellingen in de ritmes, en zijn er talloze details. Die je soms pas na een paar keer luisteren ‘ontdekt’. Er komt dus veel, heel veel op je af, maar het is goed gedoseerd.

‘The Last Night That I Lived’ heeft een mysterieuze start. Een aangename stem is in eerste instantie ingezet als instrument. De veranderingen in zang en muziek volgen elkaar hier rustiger op, zodat je mee aandacht aan de tekst kunt geven. Bijna ongemerkt zijn tempo en volume toegenomen. Totdat er ongeveer halverwege ineens een minimalistisch stukje zit. Plotseling zijn tempo en volume weer een stuk hoger. Dit herhaalt zich een paar keer, steeds anders en onverwacht.

Ook ‘Time Is A Lie’ heft een apart, maar gaaf intro. Zo word je keer op keer verrast met allerlei bijzonder dingen. Alle tracks zitten er boordevol mee. Je moet wel van complexe prog houden om dit te waarderen.

‘If There Were Nothing’ heeft zowel rockend gitaarspel als enkele rustigere (keyboard) passages. Maar er zijn ook raakvlakken met metal. De lage (bas)tonen komen ruimschoots aan bod. In enkele zwaar gespeelde delen ligt het tempo toch af en toe vrij laag. Natuurlijk variëren tempo, volume en het aantal laagjes ook in deze laatste track volop.

Technisch is dit album van hoogstaand niveau, vooral het drumwerk van Virgil is fenomenaal.
‘Ruinations’ is geen album om even bij te chillen. Want je oren moeten ‘hard werken’ om te luisteren. De tracks zorgen bovendien voor veel input naar je brein. Deze experimentele tracks zijn dus wat minder toegankelijk. Maar wel heel boeiend als je van complexe en breed opgezette prog houdt.

Within ten seconds of the start of ‘Castle Bastards‘ it is already clear that this is going to be a special album. At first sight, this opening track seems to go in all directions. Virgil will let you ‘work’ to be able to catch up with it all. It is full of special details, extra sounds. On top of that, different styles are mixed together. And if it’s not enough, fast and slow music tumble over and through each other.
The strings and keys sometimes seem to go straight against each other. The heavier music has the upper hand in all this. The few slightly lighter pieces of this instrumental track are also very complicated.

The vocals in ‘Back To Me‘ are quite basic, which is nice with this complex structure. The music sometimes sounds a bit cloudy, but that fits the setup. The structure towards the end is unexpectedly small.

Ruination‘ has a short, quiet start. Although tempo and volume go up, the first part feels less complex to listen to. Slowly the whole becomes more complicated.

This album clearly needs to grow, because it takes a while before you get to know and/or appreciate the songs a bit. In every song there’s a lot coming your way. There are cross overs to electro, jazz fusion, hard rock and even a touch of metal. These changes sometimes happens at lightning speed. Besides that, there are contradictions in the rhythms, and countless details. Sometimes you finally ‘discover’ them after listening a few times. So there is a lot, a lot coming your way, but it is well dosed.

The Last Night That I Lived‘ has a mysterious start. A pleasant voice is initially used as an instrument. The changes in vocals and music follow each other more gently here, so that you can pay attention to the lyrics. Almost unnoticed its tempo and volume have increased. Until about halfway suddenly there is a minimalistic piece. Suddenly the tempo and volume are a lot higher again. This repeats itself a few times, each time different and unexpected.

Also ‘Time Is A Lie’ has a unique, but cool intro. Time after time you will be surprised with all kinds of special things. All tracks are filled with it. You really have to like complex prog to appreciate this.

If There Were Nothing‘ has rocking guitar playing as well as some quieter (keyboard) passages. But there are common ground with metal as well. The low (bass) tones are well covered. In some heavily played parts the tempo is quite low now and then. Of course, tempo, volume and the number of layers vary a lot in this last track as well.

Technically this is a high-level album, especially the drumming of Virgil is phenomenal.
‘Ruinations‘ is not an album to chill with. Because your ears have to work hard to listen. The tracks also provide a lot of input to your brain. So, these experimental tracks are a little less accessible. But very interesting if you like complex and wide-ranging prog.
