‘The Black Noodle Project’ is from France. Their style ranges from shoegaze to prog rock/metal and everything in between. Their songs are mainly instrumental. This project still consists of multi-instrumentalist Sébastien Bourdeix and drummer Tommy Rizzitelli. Two guest musicians also participate.
The opening of this album is slow and intriguing. Tommy plays his cymbals in a special way. Sébastien plays some long-lasting piano sounds. Then tempo and volume are slowly built up. The music has a pleasantly heavy sound, but it is perhaps less heavy than you might expect in ‘Welcome to Hell’. The turns flow into each other, the tempo has a wonderful flow. The sound is a bit dingy, but that’s allowed here. The guitar playing (in multiple layers) is a bit more prominent. There is a slow turn to quieter played part, the sound remains a bit dingy in this first song. In addition to piano sounds, you hear various sounds. The spoken words sound distorted. Then the music slowly dies out.
‘Black Moment’ has a very calm start. This changes to mid tempo. Sab Elvenia has a very unique color of voice, this one may not be everyone’s taste. Vocal parts are interspersed with instrumental pieces. In a smaller part played, there are acoustic guitar sounds interwoven. Unnoticed, there are more layers to the music than you expect. After a fairly extended vocal section, this second song extinguishes with some heavier sounds. ‘The Black Noodle Project’ is very diverse in their music, as can be heard in the electronic sounds at the start of ‘Give Us Hope’. In terms of rhythm, it is more complicated than it seems. Again, there are several changes in tempo and volume. The subdued part is beautifully played, the spoken words in French forming a nice contrast through the fierced sound. This song also slowly dies out and almost seamlessly transitions into ‘Time’. There is acoustic guitar playing, complemented by a touch of sobriety. You may still have to get used to Sab’s voice. But you can hear the emotion in her voice, and it fits the music beautifully. Vocal and instrumental parts alternate. Some of the lyrics are spoken, this forms a fine blend with the vocals.
The acoustic guitar in ‘Stormy Weather’ blends well with the nice flow of the other instruments. The music is a bit heavier, not really stormy, but compelling. In the background, vocals have been added as instruments. There are nice, gradual transitions. This is especially true of the change in the middle. The slowly sung words are in harmony with the tempo of music. This song ends with the sounds of acoustic guitar playing. After the quiet start of ‘Behind The Light’, you would expect an “explosion” of sound. But the atmosphere is almost summery. Slowly, the music gets a little faster and heavier. There are some repeats played. In a slightly slower section, the vocals merge with the music. This last track extinguishes a little predictably yet nicely slowly.
The guitar playing is well varied, and you regularly hear multiple layers. The drums and cymbals are not only played in detail, but also very well dosed. Nowhere is it too much or too little. Almost all of the songs doze off; there could have been a little more variety there. The cello in ‘Give Us Hope’ and ‘Stormy Weather’ is so far in the background that it is hardly noticeable. Unnoticed, the album is complex. ‘When The Stars Align, It Will Be Time …’ does need a few listens to grow.

The Black Noodle Project – When The Stars Align, It Will Be Time …

‘The Black Noodle Project’ komt uit Frankrijk. Hun stijl varieert van shoegaze tot aan prog rock/metal en alles wat er tussen zit. Hun nummers zijn grotendeels instrumentaal. Dit project bestaat nog steeds uit multi-instrumentalist Sébastien Bourdeix en drummer Tommy Rizzitelli. Daarnaast doen er twee gastmuzikanten mee.
De opening van dit album is langzaam en intrigerend. Tommy bespeelt zijn cimbalen op een bijzondere manier. Sébastien speelt enkele langaanhoudende pianoklanken. Dan worden tempo en volume langzaam opgebouwd. De muziek heeft een aangenaam zware sound, maar het is misschien minder heftig dan je zou verwachten in ‘Welcome to Hell’. De wendingen vloeien in elkaar over, het tempo heeft een heerlijke flow. Het geluid is een beetje groezelig, maar dat mag hier. Het gitaarspel (in meerdere laagjes) is wat meer op de voorgrond. Er is een langzame wending naar kleiner gespeeld deel, de klank blijft wat groezelig in dit eerste nummer. Behalve pianoklanken, hoor je ook diverse geluiden. De gesproken woorden klinken vervormd. Dan dooft de muziek langzaam uit.
‘Black Moment’ heeft een hele kalme start. Dit verandert naar mid tempo. Sab Elvenia heeft een hele eigen kleur van stem, deze is misschien niet bij iedereen favoriet. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met instrumentale stukken. In een kleiner gespeeld deel zijn er akoestische gitaarklanken verweven. Ongemerkt zijn er meer laagjes in de muziek dan je verwacht. Na een vrij uitgebreid vocaal deel dooft dit tweede nummer met wat zwaardere klanken uit. ‘The Black Noodle Project’ is heel divers in hun muziek, dat blijk wel uit de elektronische klanken aan de start van ‘Give Us Hope’. Qua ritme zit het ingewikkelder in elkaar dan het lijkt. Ook nu zijn er diverse veranderingen qua tempo en volume. Het ingetogen deel is prachtig gespeeld, de gesproken woorden in het Frans vormen door de verbeten klank een mooi contrast. Ook dit nummer dooft langzaam uit en gaat bijna naadloos over ‘Time’. Er is akoestisch gitaarspel, aangevuld met een vleugje sobere muziek. Misschien moet je nog steeds wennen aan de stem van Sab. Maar je hoort wel de emotie in haar stem, en die past mooi bij de muziek. Vocale en instrumentale delen wisselen elkaar af. Een deel van de tekst wordt gesproken, dit vormt een prima blend met de zang.

De akoestische gitaar in ‘Stormy Weather’ mengt goed met de lekkere flow van de overige instrumenten. De muziek is wat steviger, niet echt stormachtig, wel meeslepend. Op de achtergrond is er zang als instrument toegevoegd. Er zijn mooie, geleidelijke overgangen. Dat geldt zeker voor de verandering in het midden. De langzaam gezongen woorden zijn in harmonie met het tempo van muziek. Dit nummer eindigt met de klanken van akoestisch gitaarspel. Na de rustige start van ‘Behind The Light’ zou je een “explosie” van geluid verwachten. Maar de sfeer is bijna zomers. Langzaam wordt de muziek iets sneller en zwaarder. Er worden wat herhalingen gespeeld. In een iets langzamer deel smelt de zang samen met de muziek. Deze laatste track dooft een beetje voorspelbaar maar toch mooi langzaam uit.

Het gitaarspel is goed gevarieerd, en je hoort regelmatig meerdere laagjes. De drums en de cimbalen zijn niet alleen gedetailleerd bespeeld, maar ook zeer goed gedoseerd. Het is nergens te veel of te weinig. Bijna alle nummers doven uit, daar had iets meer variatie in mogen zitten. De cello in ‘Give us Hope’ en ‘Stormy Weather’ is zo ver op de achtergrond is dat deze nauwelijks opvalt. Ongemerkt zit het album complex in elkaar. ‘When The Stars Align, It Will Be Time …’ heeft wel een paar luisterbeurten nodig om te groeien.
