Tom de Wit, or TDW, has released several albums with ‘Dreamwalkers Inc.’. For years Tom hid behind the fictional characters he wrote about. After years of ‘wrestling’ he decided to make a concept album about his own life. Because at the age of 19, Tom, who is highly sensitive, had severe bowel disease. In addition, medical mistakes were made, causing him to have a near-death experience. Digitaal releases of ‘The Days The Clock Stopped‘ was on December 4th, the official release of the physical CD (including documentary on DVD) is 15 January.
‘Crashscape‘ starts with soft sounds, piano playing, whispers and the sound of a heartbeat. The sober music gives way to a slightly chaotic piece. Slowly the peace and quiet and the whispering but impressive words return. This flows non-stop into ‘Clockstop X‘. The whispering narration continues, the touch of music is intriguing. Tom sings his first sentences; the background vocals are subtly added. The (choral) singing is built up sublimely. Slowly the music becomes a little heavier, sometimes lighter elements are incorporated. The construction towards the end is special. This continues into spoken words in ‘Code of Conduct‘. These are surreal far away, this fits the unreal situation in which Tom finds himself. The lightning fast twists and turns accentuates his emotional rollercoaster. In the metal parts a single sentence, (sometimes just a single word) is grunted. Because people sometimes sing against each other, you need the lyric booklet to be able to understand everything.
Also, in ‘Clockstop 2‘ the good distribution over the headphones is striking. You have to listen a few times to get everything in terms of music and singing. This is mainly due to what Tom has been through. Text, music and sampling are constantly on the same wavelength. That’s why the added sounds have extra value. ‘Sleepless Angels‘ ends with a few ‘hospital beeps’, which continue in ‘The Pulse‘. Here, too, there is hectic singing and music. The build-up to a beautifully minor played end is fantastic. ‘Clockstop 3‘ is a sober short track, in which Tom tells that he has never been so sick. The low background vocals are minimal but fantastic. In ‘Death and her Brother Greg‘ Tom no longer knows what is real and what delusions are. The end of this very well constructed track is quite sudden.
‘No Can Do‘ consists of five parts, Tom slowly seems to realize what he has been through. His life will never be the same again, but he wants to move on. His singing varies from fragile to grim, sometimes supported by a few grunts. This impressive epic end minimalist. From the start ‘Clockstop Insight 4‘ is intriguing. There is confidence in Tom’s voice. Non-stop follows ‘Elipogue: A String of Repeats‘. Tom realizes that he has to accept what he has been through, and that this will make him grow as a human being. The minimalist piece crawls under my skin. In the super-fast instrumental piece, the melody is preserved. The stacked vocals are sublimely supported with a touch of music. With this flawless track this album ends.
The sound of the cymbals is a bit too pale, while the drums sound good. The variety and/or harmony between Tom and the choir is super. The string instruments merge fantastically with the other music. So, there is a constant harmony between singing and music and between the instruments themselves. Even the album cover matches the whole perfectly. There are a lot of details, and every time you hear something new. Everything makes you feel that ‘The Days The Clock Stopped‘ is a concept album. Tom has depicted the fierce events in an impressive way, respect!

TDW- The Days The Clock Stopped
Tom de Wit, ofwel TDW bracht met ‘Dreamwalkers Inc.’ al meerdere albums uit. Tom verstopte zich jaren achter de fictieve personages waarover hij schreef. Na jaren van ‘worstelen’ besloot hij om een conceptalbum over zijn eigen leven te maken. Want op 19-jarige leeftijd kreeg de hoog gevoelige Tom een ernstige darmziekte. Bovendien werden er medische fouten gemaakt, waardoor hij een bijna-doodervaring had. Digitaal komt ‘The Days The Clock Stopped’ op 4 december uit, de officiële release van de fysieke cd (inclusief documentaire op dvd) is 15 januari.
‘Crashscape’ start met zachte geluiden, pianospel, gefluister en het geluid van een hartslag. De sobere muziek maakt plaats voor een licht chaotisch stukje. Langzaam keren de rust en de fluisterende, maar indrukwekkende woorden terug. Dit loopt non-stop over in ‘Clockstop X’. Het fluisterend vertellen gaat verder, het vleugje muziek is intrigerend. Tom zingt zijn eerste zinnen, de achtergrondzang subtiel is toegevoegd. De (koor)zang wordt subliem opgebouwd. Langzaam wordt de muziek iets zwaarder, hier zijn af en toe lichtere elementen in verwerkt. De opbouw naar het einde is bijzonder. Dit loopt door naar gesproken woorden in ‘Code of Conduct’. Deze zijn surreëel ver weg, dit past bij de onwerkelijke situatie waarin Tom zit. De razendsnelle wendingen benadrukken zijn emotionele rollercoaster. In de metal delen wordt een enkele zin, (soms maar een enkel woord) gegrunt. Doordat er soms tegen elkaar wordt ingezongen, heb je het tekstboekje wel nodig om alles te kunnen verstaan.
Ook in ‘Clockstop 2’ valt de goede verdeling over de koptelefoon op. Je moet wel een paar keer luisteren om alles mee te krijgen qua muziek en zang. Dat komt vooral door wat Tom heeft mee gemaakt. Tekst, muziek en sampling zitten constant op één lijn. Daarom hebben de toegevoegde geluiden meerwaarde. ‘Sleepless Angels’ eindigt met enkele “ziekenhuis- piepjes”, deze lopen door in ‘The Pulse’. Ook hier is er met vlagen hectiek in zang en muziek. De opbouw naar een prachtig klein gespeeld eind is fantastisch. ‘Clockstop 3’ is een sobere korte track, waarin Tom vertelt dat hij nog nooit zo ziek is geweest. De lage achtergrondzang is minimaal maar fantastisch. In ‘Death and her Brother Greg’ weet Tom niet meer wat echt is, en wat waanbeelden zijn. Het einde van deze zeer goed opgebouwde track is vrij plotseling.
‘No Can Do’ bestaat vijf delen, Tom lijkt langzaam te beseffen wat hij heeft meegemaakt. Zijn leven zal nooit meer hetzelfde zijn, maar hij wil verder. Zijn zang varieert van breekbaar tot grimmig, soms ondersteund door enkele grunts. Deze indrukwekkende epic eindigt minimalistisch. Vanaf de start is ‘Clockstop Insight 4’ intrigerend. Er klinkt vertrouwen in de stem van Tom. Non-stop volgt ‘A String of Repeats’. Tom beseft dat hij moet accepteren wat hij heeft meegemaakt, en dat hij hierdoor als mens zal groeien. Het minimalistische stukje kruipt onder mijn huid. In het supersnelle instrumentale stuk blijft de melodie bewaard. De gestapelde zang wordt subliem ondersteund met een vleugje muziek. Met deze gaaf opgebouwde track eindigt dit album. Het geluid van de cimbalen is iets te flets, terwijl de drums wel goed klinken. De afwisseling en/of samenzang tussen Tom en het koor is super. De strijkinstrumenten smelten fantastisch samen met de overige muziek. Dus er is een constante harmonie tussen zang en muziek en tussen de instrumenten onderling. Zelfs het album cover past perfect bij het geheel. Er zijn veel details, en steeds hoor je iets nieuws. Aan alles voel je dat ‘The Days The Clock Stopped’ een conceptalbum is. Tom heeft de heftige gebeurtenissen op een indrukwekkende manier tot verbeelding gebracht, respect!
