In 2018 werd in Italië de OAR- prog band Silver Nightmares opgericht. ‘The Wandering Angel’ is hun debuut EP. Op dit conceptalbum staat het verlies van de menselijke spiritualiteit centraal. Vanaf “de ster van het leven” komt een dwalende engel op vervuilde aarde terecht. Hij reist tussen de natuur en de helden uit het verleden. Zijn laatste zoektocht is de reis naar het universum.
Zoals verwacht is de start van ‘The Wandering Angel’ atmosferisch. Sneller dan gedacht krijgt de muziek meer pit. Het ritme is pakkend en er is een mooie balans tussen snaren en elektronische klank van de toetsen. Her en der zijn er hoge, lichte tonen in verweven. In een iets rustiger stuk komt de zang erbij. In de langzamere stukken is de (gestapelde) zang vrij zoet, maar dat mag hier. Bovendien kleuren de stemmen goed bij elkaar. Er zijn diverse veranderingen in het nummer. Ongemerkt zit het ingewikkelder in elkaar dan je in eerste instantie denkt. In het rockende stuk worden er een paar pianoklanken rondgestrooid. Je hebt dus best wel veel om naar te luisteren. Het einde is vrij onverwacht.
Door de bijzondere start is ‘D.D (Dick Dastardly)’ is weer heel anders. Het geluid van de drums is vrij vlak en kil, zeker ten opzichte van de rockende snaren. Het trompetspel is verrassend toegevoegd. Het orgelspel had wat meer body mogen hebben, dat had de impact vergroot. Verder vormt het geheel een leuke mix van rock met onder andere ‘elektro’ invloeden. Er zijn behoorlijk wat laagjes in de muziek, zo is er ook fluitspel. Deze fantastische, instrumentale track komt door de iets mindere geluidskwaliteit niet helemaal tot bloei.
Aan het begin ‘Light years away’ komen elektronische klanken naar voren, maar de rockende elementen worden niet vergeten. De klank van de zang is grimmig, de echo op de stem versterkt de mysterieuze sfeer. Tijdens in een instrumentaal stuk is het mysterieuze verdwenen en heeft rock de plaats over genomen. De zang gaat hier vervolgens met meer power in mee.
De start van ‘David the King’ is klein. De rustige manier van zingen is theatraal, dat past bij het de Bijbelse personage. Als de muziek meer power krijgt, volgt de zang grotendeels. De kleur van de stemmen past wat minder goed bij de power die ze vocaal uiten. Instrumentaal zit alles weer goed in elkaar.
De theatrale zang horen we ook terug in ‘Dame Nature’, zo nu en zijn er raakvlakken met de stem van Alan ‘Spud’ Taylor van de Britse prog rockband Nth Ascension. De laagjes van bas en gitaar zijn prima verdeeld, dit is heerlijk rockend, en het ritme is pakkend. In een rustiger stuk zijn er licht klassieke elementen, en een stukje gesproken sampling verwerkt. De blend van de stemmen is soms iets zoet, maar ze kleuren mooi bij elkaar. Na een rockend stuk eindigt dit nummer met een fade out.

Over het geheel had de balans op dit album tussen het volume van de instrumenten onderling iets beter gekund. Verder veel complimenten. De verdeling tussen links en rechts in de koptelefoon is goed. De tracks zijn divers en prima opgebouwd. De muziek varieert van een beetje zoet tot aan pittige rock, met soms een snufje metal. ‘The Wandering Angel’ is een mooi debuut dat even moet groeien.

Silver Nightmares – The Wandering Angel
In 2018 the OAR prog band Silver Nightmares was founded in Italy. ‘The Wandering Angel‘ is their debut EP. This concept album focuses on the loss of human spirituality. As expected, the start of ‘The Wandering Angel‘ is atmospheric. Faster than expected the music gets more pitched. The rhythm is catchy and there is a nice balance between strings and electronic sound of the keys. Here and there high, light tones are interwoven in it. In a slightly quieter piece the vocals are added. In the slower pieces the (stacked) vocals are quite ‘sugary’, but that is allowed here. Moreover, the voices color well together. There are several changes in the song. Unnoticed it’s more complicated than you think at first. In the rocking piece there are a few piano sounds scattered around. So, you have quite a lot to listen to. The end is a little unexpected.
Because of the special start ‘D.D (Dick Dastardly)‘ is very different. The sound of the drums is a bit flat and chilly, especially compared to the rocking strings. The trumpet playing has been added surprisingly. The organ playing could have had some more body, that would have increased the impact. Furthermore, the whole forms a nice mix of rock with among others ‘electro’ influences. There are quite a few layers in the music, there is also flute playing. Due to the slightly inferior sound quality, this fantastic, instrumental track doesn’t fully develop.
At the beginning ‘Light years away‘ electronic sounds come to the fore, but the rocking elements are not forgotten. The sound of the vocals is grim, the echo on the voice amplifies the mysterious atmosphere. During an instrumental piece the mysterious has disappeared and rock has taken over the place. The vocals then go along with more power.
The start of ‘David the King‘ is small. The quiet way of singing is theatrical, which suits the biblical character. When the music gets more power, most of the vocals follow. The color of the voices doesn’t match properly with the power they express vocally. Instrumentally everything is well put together again.
The theatrical vocals can also be heard in ‘Dame Nature‘, so every now and then there are similarities with the voice of Alan ‘Spud’ Taylor of the British prog rock band Nth Ascension. The layers of bass and guitar are well distributed, this is wonderfully rocking, and the rhythm is catchy. In a quieter piece there are slightly classical elements, and a piece of spoken sampling. The blend of the voices is sometimes a bit sweet, but they blend nicely together. After a rocking piece this song ends with a fade out.
Finally, you hear the radio edit of the title track.
Overall the balance on this album between the volume of the instruments could have been a bit better. Furthermore, many compliments. The division between left and right in the headphones is good. The tracks are diverse and well-constructed. The music varies from a bit sugary to rock with a small pinch of metal. ‘The Wandering Angel‘ is a beautiful debut that needs to grow a bit.
