De prog band Scralet Hollow komt uit Californië. Na hun vorige album ‘What If Never Was’ (2012) bleef het lang stil. Dit kwam omdat gitarist/toetsenist Gregg Olson getroffen was door een beroerte. Hoewel het een lange weg was, is hij beter hersteld dan verwacht. Nu is hun nieuwste album ‘A Window To October’ uit. Zelf beschrijven ze hun muziek ongeveer als volgt: “Onze muziek combineert een spookachtige schoonheid en textuur in de muziek, met zeer zware, krachtige stukken.”

‘Adventures In The Kings Garden’ heeft een redelijke rustige start. Allison VonBuelow heeft een prettige stem met een vrij duidelijke uitspraak in de langzamere delen. Het volumeverschil in de rustige delen en de rockende delen had groter mogen zijn. De ritmesectie zorgt voor heerlijke basis solide basis, al halen de drums qua volume soms iets te veel aandacht weg van de details in de muziek. Het geheel heeft nu niet de impact die het verdient. Het einde wordt langzaam weggedraaid.

Het intro van ‘From Sea To Infinity’ is zonder drums. Als de drums erbij komen, blijft de dromerige sfeer nog even bestaan. Zo nu en dan zijn er Arabische klanken in de muziek verwerkt. Zang en muziek zitten in dezelfde ontspannen flow. De muziek is dus overwegend vrij rustig, toch zijn er veel details aan toegevoegd.

In de titeltrack blijft deze rustige sfeer bestaan. Er zijn wel degelijk wat rockende elementen toegevoegd, maar ze zijn zeker niet heavy. Er is een mooie dynamiek in het drummen en het gitaarspel is met vlagen meeslepend. Op het eind worden zang en muziek weggedraaid.

‘The Forgotten’ heeft een vrij abrupt einde, ‘Skipping On Frozen Fire’ eindigt weer in een fade out, jammer.

De start van ‘Jupiters Calling’ is sferisch, er is leuk gespeeld met de verdeling van het geluid in de koptelefoon. Ondertussen worden er heerlijke bas grooves toegevoegd.
Deze instrumentale track bevat veel bijzondere details en allerlei geluiden. De opbouw naar het einde toe is vrij kort.

Hoewel de wendingen in ‘LVX’ over het algemeen in elkaar overvloeien, zijn ze toch regelmatig onverwacht. De muziek heeft best veel laagjes, maar komen niet altijd helemaal goed tot zijn recht.

De nummers die hierna komen passen goed bij elkaar, en bij de voorgaande nummers. De tendens is rustgevend, toch zit er regelmatig wat rockende stukken in verwerkt. De meeste tempo en volumewisselingen verlopen geleidelijk. De afwisseling dan wel het samenspel tussen snaren en synthesizer(s) is prima. Het gitaarspel is af en toe lekker rockend. De bas is aangenaam aanwezig, en zorgt samen met de drums vaak voor een rustige flow. Maar ook de synthesizers dragen met vlagen bij aan een dromerige sfeer. Een aantal nummers wordt op het einde weggedraaid.
Hoewel Scarlet Hollow over hun muziek zegt dat er heavy stukken in zitten, is het verschil tussen sferische/rustige muziek en de heavy rock (veel) minder groot dan verwacht. Er zijn minder rockende delen dan op ‘What If Never Was’.
Wie van grote tegenstellingen houdt, zal hier misschien wat missen. De contrasten zijn er meer in de hoge versus lage tonen, zoals te hoen is in bijvoorbeeld ‘Skipping On Frozen Fire’. Ondanks de vele details in de muziek, luisteren deze twaalf nummers luisteren gemakkelijk weg.
‘A Window To October’ is een aanrader voor de liefhebber van de wat rustigere prog.

However, sometimes the drums take a bit too much attention away from the details in the music. The whole thing doesn’t have the impact it deserves. The end is slowly turned away.

The intro of ‘From Sea To Infinity‘ is without drums. When the drums are added, the dreamy atmosphere remains for a while. Every now and then Arabic sounds are incorporated in the music. Vocals and music are in the same relaxed flow. So the music is mostly quite quiet, yet many details have been added.

In the title track this quiet atmosphere remains. Some rocking elements have been added, but they are certainly not heavy. There is a nice dynamic in the drumming and the guitar playing is compelling with gusts. In the end vocals and music are turned away.

‘The Forgotten‘ has a rather abrupt end, ‘Skipping On Frozen Fire‘ ends in a fade out again, a pity.

The start of ‘Jupiters Calling‘ is spherical, there is nice distribution of the sound in the headphones. Meanwhile delicious bass grooves are added.
This instrumental track contains a lot of special details and all kinds of sounds. The build-up towards the end is quite short.

Although the twists and turns in ‘LVX‘ generally flow into each other, they are often unexpected. The music has quite a lot of layers, but doesn’t always come into its own.

The songs that follow suit each other well, as well as the previous songs. The tendency is calming, yet there are regularly some rocking pieces in it.
Most tempo and volume changes are gradual. The alternation between strings and synthesizer(s) is fine. From time to time the guitar playing is nicely rocking. The bass is pleasantly present, and together with the drums often ensures a quiet flow. But also, the synthesizers contribute to a dreamy atmosphere. A number of songs are turned away at the end.
Although Scarlet Hollow says there are heavy pieces in their music, the difference between spherical/quiet music and heavy rock is (much) less than expected. There are less rocking parts than on ‘What If Never Was’. Those who like big contradictions might miss out on this one. The contrasts are more in the high versus low tones, like in for instance ‘Skipping On Frozen Fire‘. Despite the many details in the music, these twelve songs are easy to listen away.
