Residuos Mentales (Greece) consists of Stratos Morianos (keyboards) and Alexandros Mantas (guitars, bass and flute). This instrumental studio project was founded over a decade ago. In 2018, they launched ‘Introspection’. Now ‘A Temporary State of Bliss’ is released. This prog rock album has cross -overs to metal and funk, among others.
The first piece of ‘The Stuff of Dreams’ contains a mix of spherical and electronic sounds. Although the music is not very slow, the atmosphere becomes mysterious. The combination of details and the smooth turns are captivating. Both the variation and blend of the different instruments, and the high versus low tones are special. For instance, you hear flute playing, the sounds of string instruments and high keyboard tones. Alternated and/or complemented by (bass) guitar. At times, there are quite a lot of layers in the music. At other times, there is just a touch of music. Melodious parts alternate with more tightly played pieces. There are numerous changes and details, including with piano playing, and percussion. The unexpected but wonderful turn to metal elements flows into an experimental, quiet section. There are “voices” used as instruments. The metal is combined with light classical elements. This is followed by several more changes. This very well-constructed opening track ends in a (somewhat boring) fade out.

‘The Missing Part’ starts with piano sounds and compelling guitar playing, among other things. The sound of brass forms a lovely blend with the other instruments. Although the music is quite quiet, there are (almost unnoticeable) quite a lot of layers, details and changes at times. Some of these changes only last for a moment, so there is quite a lot going on. But the twists and turns flow well, besides, it is all very well spread over the headset. There are also special additions and changes in ‘A Series of Self-Correcting Errors’. These transitions are there not only in tempo or volume, but also in atmosphere and style. You can hear rocking guitar playing, old-school progressive organ playing and sparkling piano sounds, among others. In addition, the atmosphere sometimes leans towards mysterious, another time there are metal influences, or light classical elements. Despite this potpourri of styles, everything remains balanced. The ending is abrupt, but beautiful.

The sound of a music box mixes with subdued music in ‘Impending Catastrophe’. A “layer” of music seems to be added each time, but the composition remains quiet for a while. Again, there are unusual twists and mixes of instruments and styles, such as funk and metal. During the accessible, catchy rhythms, I automatically tap along with my foot. When the tempo drops again, the atmosphere changes. There are some rests in there, almost every time it is surprising how the track continues. An occasional twist is perhaps slightly predictable, but even these are well done. By the way of construction, it’s
obvious that not only this track ends, but also the album. The last note could have lasted a little longer, but that’s a detail.

Like on their previous album, quite a lot happens. But now it’s better structured. Some changes flow into each other, others are sudden. There are transitions that last only a few seconds. Various styles and/or atmospheres follow each other, at other times forming a special blend. ‘Residuos Mentales’ has made progression with ‘A Temporary State of Bliss’. It’s almost December, a great opportunity to put this wonderful album on your wish list.

Residuos Mentales – A Temporary State of Bliss

Residuos Mentales (Griekenland) bestaat uit Stratos Morianos (keyboards) en Alexandros Mantas (gitaren, bas en fluit). Dit instrumentale studio project werd ruim tien jaar geleden opgericht. In 2018 lanceerden ze ‘Introspection’. Nu is ‘A Temporary State of Bliss’ uit. Dit prog rock album heeft cross -overs naar onder andere metal en funk.
Het eerste stuk van ‘The Stuff of Dreams’ bevat een mix van sferische en elektronische klanken. Hoewel de muziek niet heel langzaam is, wordt de sfeer mysterieus. De combinatie van details en de vloeiende wendingen zijn boeiend. Zowel de variatie als de melange van de verschillende instrumenten, en de hoge versus lage tonen zijn bijzonder. Zo hoor je bijvoorbeeld fluitspel, de klanken van strijkinstrumenten en hoge keyboard tonen. Afgewisseld en/of aangevuld met (bas) gitaar. Met vlagen zijn er best veel laagjes in de muziek. Op andere momenten is er maar een vleugje muziek. Melodieuze delen worden afgewisseld met strakker gespeelde stukken. Er zijn talloze veranderingen en details, onder andere met pianospel, en percussie. De onverwachte, maar gave wending naar metal elementen vloeit over naar een experimenteel, rustig deel. Er zijn “stemmen” ingezet als instrument. De metal wordt gecombineerd met licht klassieke elementen. Hierna volgen nog een aantal veranderingen. Deze zeer goed opgebouwde openingstrack eindigt in een (ietwat saaie) fade out.

‘The Missing Part’ start onder andere met pianoklanken en meeslepend gitaarspel. De klank van koperblazers vormt een mooie melange met de overige instrumenten. Hoewel de muziek vrij rustig is, zijn er (bijna ongemerkt) soms vrij veel laagjes, details en veranderingen. Enkele van deze veranderingen duren maar even, waardoor er best veel op je af komt. Maar de twists en turns verlopen goed, bovendien is het geheel prima verdeeld over de headset. Ook in ‘A Series of Self-Correcting Errors’ zijn er bijzondere toevoegingen en veranderingen. Deze transities zijn er niet alleen in tempo of volume, maar ook in sfeer en stijl. Je hoort onder andere rockend gitaarspel, old school progressief orgelspel en sprankelende pianoklanken. Daarnaast neigt de sfeer soms naar mysterieus, een andere keer zijn er metal invloeden, of licht klassieke elementen. Ondanks deze potpourri aan stijlen blijft het geheel in balans. Het einde is plotseling, maar mooi.

Het geluid van een speeldoosje vermengt zich in ‘Impending Catastrophe’ met ingetogen muziek. Er lijkt steeds een “laagje” muziek bij te komen, maar de compositie blijft nog even rustig. Ook nu zijn er weer bijzondere wendingen en mixen van instrumenten en stijlen, zoals funk en metal. Tijdens de toegankelijke, pakkende ritmes tap ik vanzelf mee met mijn voet. Als het tempo weer daalt, verandert de sfeer. Er zijn enkele rusten in verwerkt, bijna iedere keer is het verrassend hoe de track verder gaat. Een enkele wending is misschien iets voorspelbaar, maar ook die zijn goed uitgevoerd. Door de manier van opbouw is
het duidelijk dat niet alleen deze track eindigt, maar ook de cd. De laatste noot had iets langer aan mogen houden, maar dat is een detail.

Net als op hun vorige album, gebeurt er behoorlijk veel. Maar nu is het beter gestructureerd. Sommige veranderingen vloeien in elkaar over, andere zijn plotseling. Er zijn transities die maar enkele seconden duren. Diverse stijlen en/of sferen volgen elkaar op, op andere momenten vormen ze een bijzondere melange. ‘Residuos Mentales’ heeft met ‘A Temporary State of Bliss’ progressie gemaakt. Het is bijna december, een prima gelegenheid om dit gave album op je verlanglijstje te zetten.
