Brian de Graeve is known as founder/frontman of the neo-prog band Silhouette. He also founded the alternative symphonic prog rock project ‘Realisea’. In 2020, ‘Mantelpeace,’ the debut album was released. Brian and singer/songwriter Marjolein de Graeve also wrote the melodic prog rock songs for ‘Fairly Carefree’. It featured a number of guest musicians, including Ton Scherpenzeel.

‘I Could Never Learn’ starts with sounds of rain, and thunder. At the same time, footsteps seem to be heard. The sound of the keys is mysterious, the guitar playing is compelling. This combination crawls under my skin. Then a turn follows, the number of layers in the music has increased, but the tempo and volume have not increased very much. The blend of the various instruments is extraordinary. So are the vocals, both individually, and the harmony vocals of Brian and Marjolein de Graeve. Both have their own characteristic color of voice. The high-pitched vocals blend beautifully with the music. During an instrumental part, there is a good contrast between the high and low notes. Most of the turns are fairly gradual. Still, the tempo and volume differences are almost imperceptibly quite large. Once again, the high range in the vocals stands out positively. This is well positioned in a slightly gentler played section, so vocals and music remain balanced. The opening track is beautiful, although you may have to get used to the way it ends.

Also in ‘Crackled Colorite’, you can hear the sound differences of the drum kit. Although this is generally a fairly quiet track, there are rocking elements woven into it. Both the variety and the interplay of keys and (bass) guitar are good. ‘Your Lies’ has a vocal intro, then a catchy, almost poppy continuation. This song lingers with you after just one listen. Although there are predictable bits, it contains enough detail to keep you interested. Not only are vocals and music in harmony, the instruments among themselves are and remain in balance. The same goes for ‘Just Pretending.’
The clear sound also makes the calm parts of ‘Out in the Cold’, among others, stand out well. This song has a very nice ending.
The calm part of ‘Sheltered’ fits nicely with the sounds of birds in the intro. Over and over you can hear all kinds of details, vocals and music remain quiet for a while. During the extended instrumental piece, I enjoy the compelling guitar playing again. The turn to an acoustic, subdued part marks the end of this track.

The pure vocals blend nicely with the acoustic guitar playing. The first turn in ‘Trilemma’ is quite unexpected. There are several changes, especially in the music. The vocal parts are good, but it’s still generally the instrumental parts that give me goosebumps. Especially the subdued and compelling parts. But the uptempo pieces are fine too! The transitions in vocals and music are beautiful. It is always a surprise how the song continues. This fine song is cut off just a little too early. Finally, ‘Malgré les Vagues’. Ton Scherpenzeel plays keyboard in this song that starts melancholy, but ends with more power.

Very occasionally the high vocals are a bit sharp in sound. Here and there a touch of folkore is intertwined. The symphonic sounds are mostly subtle. Sometimes there are quite a lot of layers in vocals and music. Certain parts are impressive right away, others not until later. Because of the complex structure, it takes quite a while before you get to know the songs a bit. Please allow ‘Fairly Carefree’ time to grow, because it is a surprising album.

Realisea – Fairly Carefree

Brian de Graeve is bekend als oprichter/frontman van de neo-progband Silhouette. Hij richtte ook het alternatief symfonisch progrockproject ‘Realisea’ op. In 2020 kwam ‘Mantelpeace’, het debuutalbum uit. Brian en zangeres/tekstschrijfster Marjolein de Graeve schreven ook de melodieuze prog rocknummers voor ’Fairly Carefree’. Er werkten een aantal gastmuzikanten aan mee, waaronder Ton Scherpenzeel.

‘I could never learn’ start met geluid van regen, en onweer. Tegelijkertijd lijken er voetstappen te klinken. De klank van de toetsen is mysterieus, het gitaarspel is meeslepend. Dit samenspel kruipt onder mijn huid. Dan volgt er een wending, het aantal laagjes in de muziek is opgelopen, maar het tempo en volume zijn niet heel veel toegenomen. De melange van de verschillende instrumenten is bijzonder. Dat geldt ook voor de zang, zowel individueel, als de samenzang van Brian en Marjolein de Graeve. Beide hebben een kenmerkende eigen kleur van stem. De hoge zang smelt mooi samen met de muziek. Tijdens een instrumentaal deel is er een goed contrast tussen de hoge en lage tonen. De meeste wendingen verlopen vrij geleidelijk. Toch zijn de tempo en volumeverschillen bijna ongemerkt best groot. Het hoge bereik in de zang valt nogmaals positief op. Dit is prima geplaatst in een iets zachter gespeeld deel, zodat zang en muziek in balans blijven. De openingstrack is mooi, al moet je misschien even wennen aan de manier waarop het eindigt.

Ook in ‘Crackled Colorite’ hoor je de klankverschillen van het drumstel. Hoewel dit over het algemeen een vrij rustige track is, zijn er rockende elementen in verweven. Zowel de afwisseling als het samenspel van toetsen en (bas)gitaar is goed. ‘Your Lies’ heeft een vocaal intro, dan een pakkend, bijna poppy vervolg. Dit nummer blijft je na één keer luisteren al bij. Hoewel er voorspelbare stukjes zijn, bevat het voldoende details om te blijven boeien. Niet alleen zang en muziek zijn in harmonie, ook de instrumenten onderling zijn en blijven in balans. Dat geldt ook voor ‘Just Pretending’.
Door het heldere geluid komen ook de kalme delen van onder andere ‘Out in the Cold’ goed tot zijn recht. Dit nummer heeft een heel mooi einde.
Het kalme deel van ‘Sheltered’ sluit mooi aan bij de vogelgeluiden van het intro. Steeds hoor je allerlei details, zang en muziek blijven een tijd rustig. Tijdens het uitgebreide instrumentale stuk geniet ik weer van het meeslepende gitaarspel. De wending naar een akoestisch, ingetogen deel vormt het einde van deze track.

De pure zang mengt zich mooi met het akoestisch gitaarspel. De eerste wending in ‘Trilemma’ is best onverwacht. Er zijn diverse veranderingen, vooral in de muziek. De vocale delen zijn goed, maar het zijn over het algemeen toch de instrumentale delen die mij kippenvel bezorgen. En dan met name de ingetogen, en meeslepende stukken. Maar ook de uptempo stuken zijn prima! De overgangen in zang en muziek zijn prachtig. Steeds is het weer een verrassing hoe het nummer verder gaat. Dit gave nummer is net iets te vroeg afgekapt. Tot slot ‘Malgré les Vagues’. Ton Scherpenzeel speelt keyboard in dit nummer dat melancholisch start, maar met meer power eindigt.

Heel af en toe is de hoge zang iets scherp van klank. Her en der is er een vleugje folkore in verweven.De symfonische klanken zijn meestal subtiel aanwezig. Soms zijn er best veel laagjes in zang en muziek. Bepaalde delen zijn meteen indrukwekkend, andere stukken pas later. Door de complexe opbouw duurt het behoorlijke tijd voordat je de nummers een beetje kent. Gun ‘Fairly Carefree’ de tijd om te groeien, want het is een verrassend album.
