The guitarist Peter Matuchniak plays with a number of (prog)bands, such as Kinetic Element and Gekko Projekt. In addition, this Brit session is a musician for, among others, Marco Ragni and Psychic for Radio. He not only plays prog, but also rock and jazz. Peter has released several solo albums. On ‘Sessions‘, his latest album, he plays songs from albums on which he was a guest guitarist himself, he plays his own interpretations. The musicians were very pleased to give permission for this, they even play along as guest musicians. These are among others: Dennis Atlas, Jeff Mack.

‘Big Heart‘ has an atmospheric start. Slowly but surely the music gets more power, and becomes a bit ‘spooky’ in a pleasant way. Just before the end there is a beautiful transition to a minimalistic piece. Almost non-stop it goes on to ‘She Knows‘, where you hear a mix of acoustic and electric guitars, it is played compellingly. The balance between guitars and the other instruments is good. The flute and cello are woven into the whole. The cello gives the quiet piece just that little bit more intensity. The first vocal song is ‘Carly‘, Dennis Atlas has a pleasant voice, also the background vocals are fine. During the instrumental piece, the beautiful guitar playing comes to the fore most clearly. The fade out is a bit unexpected. Also, in ‘Fear‘ there’s a good balance between the instruments. There are a lot of nice details. The guitar regularly tears its way through delightfully. The end is sudden, but cool. Peter plays various songs by Marco Ragni, including The Wandering Caravan (I through III). This is delicious prog, with rocking pieces as well as small parts played. There is a lovely piece of organ playing in which Pink Floyd influences can be heard. Because different styles pass by in these songs, there are all kinds of changes in tempo, volume and instruments. It’s fascinating, but sometimes a lot comes up.

So much different is ‘Gentle Bird‘ by Simon Strevens. The tempo is pleasantly slow. Cecilia Le Poer Power with her clear voice provides a wordless but beautiful backing vocals. So, one captivating song follows the other. The songs are quite short. That’s inevitable, because there are no less than 21 songs on this album. In a number of songs, the changes flow slowly into each other. But in for example ‘Flashlight‘ twists and turns are generally quite sudden. Maybe you have to get used to it, but this too is fascinatingly played. The minimalist intro of ‘Golden Cage‘ gets under my skin. There’s a sudden turn to beautifully sparkling piano playing. Suddenly there is a kind of chaos in the music. The “distorted” guitar playing forms an excellent interaction with the fast, slightly heavier piano playing. This flows beautifully into a compelling piece… immediately I am touched again. And that’s what the musicians hold on to until the end.

The last song ‘Lions & Pitchfork Martyrs‘ is very special. The past 78 minutes a lot of beautiful things have passed by. Among others the woodwinds of Dave Newhouse, backing vocals of Durga McBroom. A large number of guest musicians worked on this album. The diversity of the songs is great, so there are different styles and atmospheres. Yet it feels like one whole. You don’t have to know the original versions to enjoy Peter’s performance. Comparison hasn’t occurred to me. Because these 21 songs feel very natural.

Peter Matuchniak – Sessions

De gitarist Peter Matuchniak speelt bij een aantal (prog)bands, zoals Kinetic Element Gekko Projekt. Daarnaast is deze Brit sessiemuzikant voor onder andere Marco Ragni en Psychic for Radio. Hij speelt niet alleen prog, maar ook rock en jazz. Peter heeft verschillende soloalbums uitgebracht. Op ‘Sessions’, zijn laatste album, speelt hij nummers van albums waarop hij zelf gastgitarist was, hij speelt zijn eigen interpretaties. De muzikanten gaven hiervoor maar wat graag toestemming, ze spelen zelfs mee als gastmuzikant. Dit zijn onder andere: Dennis Atlas en Jeff Mack.

‘Big Heart’ heeft een sfeervolle start. Langzaam maar zeker krijgt de muziek meer power, en wordt op een aangename manier beetje ’spooky’. Vlak voor het einde is er een prachtige overgang naar een minimalistisch stukje. Bijna non stop gaat het door naar ‘She Knows’, hierin hoor je een mix van akoestische en elektrische gitaren, het is meeslepend gespeeld. De balans tussen gitaren en de overige instrumenten is goed. De fluit en cello zijn mooi verweven in het geheel. De cello geeft het rustige stukje net dat beetje meer intensiteit. Het eerste vocale nummer is ‘Carly’, Dennis Atlas heeft een fijne stem, ook de achtergrondzang is prima. Tijdens het instrumentale stuk komt het mooie gitaarspel het duidelijkst naar voren. De fade out is een beetje onverwacht. Ook in ‘Fear’ valt de goede balans tussen de instrumenten op. Er zijn veel mooie details. De gitaar scheurt er regelmatig heerlijk doorheen. Het einde is plotseling, maar gaaf. Peter speelt diverse nummers van Marco Ragni, waaronder The Wandering Caravan (I t/m III). Dit is heerlijke prog, met zowel rockende stukken als klein gespeelde delen. Er is een heerlijk stuk orgelspel waarin Pink Floyd invloeden hoorbaar zijn. Doordat er verschillende stijlen voorbijkomen in deze nummers, zijn er allerlei veranderingen in tempo, volume en instrumenten. Het is boeiend, maar er komt soms veel op je af.

Zoveel anders is ‘Gentle Bird’ van Simon Strevens. Het tempo is aangenaam langzaam. Cecilia Le Poer Power zorgt met haar heldere stem voor een woordeloze maar mooie achtergrondzang. Zo volgt het ene boeiende nummer het andere op. De nummers zijn vrij kort. Dat kan ook niet anders, want er staan maar liefst 21 nummers op dit album. In een aantal nummers vloeien de veranderingen langzaam in elkaar over. Maar in bijvoorbeeld ‘Flashlight’ zijn de twists and turns over het algemeen vrij plotseling. Misschien moet je er even aan wennen, maar ook dit is boeiend gespeeld. Het minimalistische intro van ‘Golden Cage’ kruipt onder mijn huid. Er is een plotselinge wending naar prachtig sprankelend pianospel. Ineens is er een soort chaos in de muziek. Het “vervormde” gitaarspel vormt een prima interactie met het snelle, iets zwaardere pianospel. Dit vloeit prachtig over naar een meeslepend stuk.. meteen ben ik weer geraakt. En dat houden de muzikanten vast tot en met het eind.

Het laatste nummer ‘Lions & Pitchfork Martyrs’ is bijzonder van opzet. De afgelopen 78 minuten is er veel moois voorbijgekomen. Onder andere de woodwinds van Dave Newhouse, achtergrondzang van Durga McBroom. Aan dit album werkte een groot aantal gastmuzikanten mee. De diversiteit van de nummers is groot, dus zijn er uiteenlopende stijlen en sferen. Toch voelt het aan als één geheel. Je hoeft de originele versies niet te kennen om van de uitvoering van Peter te genieten. Het vergelijken is niet in mij opgekomen. Want deze 21 nummers voelen heel natuurlijk aan.
