About a year ago, German singer/multi-instrumentalist Noel Husser launched the single ‘Footprints’. This is standalone from his new EP, which he will soon release on his own.
The EP ‘Beyond’ is more or less a melange of his fantastic concept album ‘Tell Me Who I Am’ (2017) and the melodic album ‘A Little Dream’ (2020). Vocally and instrumentally, he shows a lot of variety. He uses metal elements and orchestral arrangements. In addition, you not only hear melodic soundscapes, but also dark atmospheric imagery that matches the lyrics. Because ‘Beyond’ takes you to the deep abyss, where demons are hidden.

‘Conscious’ opens with classic, wordless choral vocals and a special blend of calm music. With its short, deep grunt and heavier music, this opening track seems to be heading towards the metal side. But when the choruses stop, the music briefly lightens up. The varied vocals contain several layers. If you listen with headset, the contrast between the highs and lows comes out better. The contrast in volume between heavy and light is rather small. Some phrases are grunted, this melds beautifully with the music. This is interspersed with (low) clean vocals. There is an interplay between different musical styles. The classical-oriented parts lack some warmth. The choral vocals return, after which this opening track fades out lovely and gradually. After some special sounds, a catchy rhythm slowly emerges in ‘Beyond’. The (theatrical) vocals are stacked at times. In addition, the vocals occasionally have a slightly classical feel. Despite the contrasts, it does fit the metal. The combination/interchange between the keyboard instruments and (bass) guitar is fine. Noel sang and played everything except drums. This is done by Max Mölle, and he does it well! There are quite a lot of details, including some sampled sounds. The occasional, deep grunt is added perfectly. Again, there is a good build-up to the end.

In every song, the variation in the vocals stands out. This variation comes in pitch and volume. In addition, Noel combines clean vocals with some grunts. Because of the layered vocals, the words he sings are not all easy to understand. But that comes along as you listen more often. The colour of the vocals matches the music throughout. Bjorn Strid is guest vocalist on the duet ‘Evolve’. The soft sampled sound and instrumental intro are calm. Both the individual and harmony vocals of their beautiful words are very good. The pace of (several layers of) vocals and music remain calm for a while. As tempo and volume increase, vocals and music remain balanced. The instrumental “metal” piece flows beautifully into a lightly played section. Now the words are more spoken than sung. The build-up to more power in vocals and music is fantastic. The further this song progresses, the more beautiful it becomes, both vocally and instrumentally. The ending, too, is beautiful.

The title track is the first single that has been released. It is already available for purchase via his Bandcamp page. The rest of the album will follow soon. The contrasts between high/low and light/dark could have been a bit larger. Also, the volume differences could have been a bit wider. This would have brought out the emotion in vocals and music even better. Other than that, only positive comments. The sound is well spread over the headset. Vocally and instrumentally it was well composed and performed. The variation and layering in the vocals is very rich. Noel can easily be called a vocal and instrumental jack-of-all-trades.

Noel Husser – Beyond

Ongeveer een jaar geleden lanceerde de Duitse zanger/ multi-instrumentalist Noel Husser de single ‘Footprints’. Deze staat los van zijn nieuwe EP, dat hij binnenkort in eigen beheer uitbrengt.
De EP ‘Beyond’ is min of meer een melange van zijn gave concept album ‘Tell Me Who I Am’ (2017) en het melodische album ‘A Little Dream’ (2020). Vocaal en instrumentaal laat hij veel variatie horen. Hij gebruikt metal elementen en orkestrale arrangementen. Daarnaast hoor je niet alleen melodische soundscapes, maar ook donkere sfeerbeelden die passen bij de teksten. Want ‘Beyond’ neemt je mee naar de diepe afgrond, waar demonen verborgen liggen.

‘Conscious’ opent met klassieke, woordeloze koorzang en een bijzondere melange van kalme muziek. Door de korte, diepe grunt en de zwaardere muziek lijkt deze openingstrack naar de metal kant te gaan. Maar als de koorzang stopt, wordt de muziek eventjes lichter. De gevarieerde zang bevat meerdere laagjes. Als je met headset luistert, komt het contrast tussen de hoge en lage tonen beter tot zijn recht. Het contrast in volume tussen zwaar en licht is vrij klein. Enkele zinnen worden gegrunt, dit smelt mooi samen met de muziek. Dit wordt afgewisseld met (lage) cleane zang. Er is een wisselwerking tussen verschillende muziekstijlen. De klassiek georiënteerde delen missen wat warmte. De koorzang komt terug, waarna deze openingstrack mooi langzaam uitdooft. Na enkele bijzondere geluiden ontstaat er in ‘Beyond’ langzaam een pakkend ritme. De (theatrale) zang is soms gestapeld. Daarnaast heeft de zang af en toe een licht klassieke sfeer. Ondanks de contrasten past het wel bij de metal. De combinatie/afwisseling tussen de toetsinstrumenten en (bas)gitaar is prima. Noel heeft alles gezongen en gespeeld, behalve drums. Dit is gedaan door Max Mölle, en dat doet hij goed!. Er zijn behoorlijk wat details, waaronder enkele gesampelde geluiden. De enkele, diepe grunt is gaaf toegevoegd. Ook nu is er weer een goede opbouw naar het einde.

In ieder nummer valt de variatie in de zang op. Die variatie is er in toonhoogte en volume. Daarnaast combineert Noel cleane zang met enkele grunts. Door de gelaagdheid van de zang zijn de woorden die hij zingt niet allemaal goed te verstaan. Maar dat komt wel naar mate je vaker luistert. De kleur van de zang past overal bij de muziek. Bjorn Strid is gastzanger in het duet ‘Evolve’. Het zachte gesampelde geluid en het instrumentale intro zijn kalm. Zowel de individuele als de samenzang van hun mooie woorden is erg goed. Het tempo van (meerdere laagjes) zang en muziek blijven een poosje kalm. Als tempo en volume toenemen, blijven zang en muziek in balans. Het instrumentale “metal” stuk vloeit prachtig over naar een licht gespeeld deel. De woorden worden nu meer gesproken dan gezongen. De opbouw naar meer power in zang en muziek is fantastisch. Hoe verder dit nummer vordert, hoe mooier het wordt, zowel vocaal als instrumentaal. Ook het einde is mooi.

De titeltrack is de eerste singel die uit is gebracht. Deze is al te koop via zijn Bandcamp pagina. De rest van het album volgt binnenkort. De contrasten tussen hoog/laag en licht/donker hadden iets groter mogen zijn. Ook de volume verschillen hadden iets ruimer gekund. De emotie in zang en muziek was dan nog beter naar voren gekomen. Verder alleen maar pluspunten. Het geluid is prima verdeeld over de headset. Vocaal en instrumentaal is het goed gecomponeerd en uitgevoerd. De variatie en de gelaagdheid in de zang is erg groot. Noel mag gerust een vocale en instrumentale duizendpoot genoemd worden.
