Een aantal (ex) bandleden van de Nederlandse prog rockband Sylvium besloot in 2018 om een nieuw (studio) project, met de naam ‘My Arrival’ op te richten. Nu is hun debuutalbum ‘Satur9 & Indigo’ uit. Het album vertelt een verhaal over het vertrek om een nieuwe veilige plaats te vinden om te wonen. Naast een nieuw project, hebben ze ook ‘MEY productions’, hun eigen label, opgericht.

‘[Intro] Ending Theme’ heeft een rustige, dromerige start. De cimbalen zijn zacht bespeeld. De muziek kabbelt aangenaam voort tot aan ‘Gone’. De muziek heeft in eerste instantie ongeveer dezelfde flow als de openingstrack. De eerste woorden klinken vervormd, en zijn vrij moeilijk te verstaan. Daarna hoor je aan de stem dat het Sylvium zanger Richard de Geest is. Hij heeft een hele aangename stem, en is vrij hier goed te verstaan. Ook in de structuur van de muziek hoor je overeenkomsten met Sylvium. Toch zijn de verschillen groot genoeg.
Hoewel dit geen sing a long nummer is, kun je delen van de tekst na een paar keer luisteren aardig meezingen. De laatste zin “But now you’re gone” is emotioneel gezongen.

De gesproken woorden in ‘Pale White Dot’ zijn niet echt vrolijk. Toch voelt het luisteren comfortabel aan, want de muziek is laagdrempelig gehouden.
De achtergrondzang in ‘Strange Machine’ is subtiel, maar mooi. De laagjes in de muziek smelten prachtig samen.

De titeltrack gaat over een wetenschapper die met zijn ruimteschip, maar zonder zijn vrouw, de aarde verlaat. Er klinkt vermoeidheid/melancholie in zijn stem. De tekst is best belangrijk om alles te begrijpen. Daarom had ik verwacht dat er een tekstboekje bij zou zitten. Gelukkig is Richard vrij goed te verstaan. Weer komen de gestapelde stemmen mooi uit. Zang en muziek zijn constant in balans. Het ruimtevaartaspect komt in de sampling tot uiting. Het meespelende gitaarspel is om bij weg te dromen. Het ritme zorgt mede voor een heerlijke flow.

In ‘Come Undone’ komt de hoofdpersoon in een asteroïdeveld te zitten. Ondertussen heeft hij te kampen met allerlei emoties, dat is terug te horen in een monoloog.

Het pianospel in ‘Failure of a Grand Design’ is vrij zwaar en somber aangezet. Langzaam verdwijnt de piano naar de achtergrond en komen er allerlei geluiden bij.
Nadat de piano weer een keer op de voorgrond is geweest, hoor je een prachtige mix van allerlei geluiden. Hierin zit ook de sound van wat lijkt op strijkinstrumenten. Er is een gave wending, waarin het langzame pianospel vlak voor het eind van deze instrumentale track terugkomt.

Ook in ‘Close Your Eyes‘ zijn de verschillende laagjes gitaarspel in balans met de toetsen.
Dit wordt prachtig aangevuld door de ritmesectie.
Vooral de woorden “You’re still the one for me” zijn overtuigend gezongen. Het instrumentale stuk is meeslepend. Het nummer eindigt mooi klein, maar had wat langer aan mogen houden.

Het album eindigt met het instrumentale ‘[Outro] Home’. Dit eindigt vrij plotseling, maar dat is een prima keuze.

Qua tekst is ‘Satur9 & Indigo’ een luister album, want er zit een verhaallijn in. Maar ook al zou je niet naar de tekst luisteren dan kun je zeker genieten van de zang. Je hoort wisselingen in de emotie van bijvoorbeeld tederheid, en op andere momenten een verbeten klank. De warme kleur van Richard’s stem maakt het extra aangenaam. In de langzamere delen is hij bijna woord voor woord te verstaan In de snellere delen is dat wat lastiger. Zang en muziek zijn constant in harmonie, ook wat betreft het volume is er evenwicht. De nummers zijn grotendeels rustig van opzet, afgewisseld met enkele licht rockende stukken.

My Arrival – Satur9 & Indigo

Some of the of (ex) band members of the Dutch prog rock band Sylvium decided in 2018 to start a new (studio) project called ‘My Arrival‘. Now their debut album ‘Satur9 & Indigo‘ is out. The album tells a story about leaving to find a new safe place to live. Next to a new project, they also founded ‘MEY productions‘, their own label.

‘[Intro] Ending Theme‘ has a quiet, dreamy start. The cymbals are played gently.The music ripples pleasantly through to ‘Gone‘. At first the music has about the same flow as the opening track. The first words sound distorted, and are quite difficult to understand. After that you can hear by the voice that it is the Sylvium singer Richard de Geest. He has a very pleasant voice, and is quite easy to understand here. Also, in the structure of the music you hear similarities with Sylvium. Yet the differences are big enough.
Although this is not a sing a long song, you can sing parts of the lyrics after a few times listening. The last sentence “But now you’re gone” has been sung emotionally.

The words spoken in ‘Pale White Dot‘ aren’t very cheerful. Still, listening feels comfortable, because the music has been kept accessible.
The background vocals in ‘Strange Machine‘ are subtle, but beautiful. The layers in the music melt together beautifully.

The title track is about a scientist who leaves Earth with his spaceship, but without his wife. There is fatigue/melancholy in his voice. It is important to understand the lyrics.. That’s why I expected the album would appear with a textbook. Luckily Richard is quite easy to understand. Again, the stacked voices come out nicely. Vocals and music are constantly in balance. The space aspect is reflected in the sampling. You can dream away on the compelling guitar playing. The rhythm ensures a delicious flow.

In ‘Come Undone‘ the main character is ‘caught’ in an asteroid field. In the meantime, he has to contend with all kinds of emotions, which can be heard in a monologue.

The piano playing in ‘Failure of a Grand Design‘ is quite heavy and gloomy. Slowly the piano disappears into the background and several sounds are added.
After the piano has been in the foreground again, you can hear a beautiful mix of all kinds of sounds. Here is also the sound of what looks like string instruments. There is a cool twist, in which the slow piano playing returns just before the end of this instrumental track.

Also, in ‘Close Your Eyes‘ the different layers of guitar playing are in balance with the keys.
This is beautifully complemented by the rhythm section.
Especially the words “You’re still the one for me” are sung convincingly. The instrumental piece is compelling. The song ends nice and small, but could have lasted a bit longer.

The album ends with the instrumental ‘[Outro] Home‘. This ends quite suddenly, but that’s a good choice.

Because of the storyline, ’Satur9 & Indigo‘ is al lyrically driven album. But even if you would not listen to the lyrics, you can certainly enjoy the vocals. You can hear changes in the emotion, like tenderness, and on other moments a grimly sound. The warm colour of Richard’s voice makes it extra pleasant. In the slower parts he can be understood very well. In the faster parts it is a bit more difficult. Vocals and music are constantly in harmony, there is also balance in the volume. The songs are mostly calm, interspersed with some slightly rocking pieces.
