There aren’t that many prog rock bands from Switzerland, yet there are a few including Clepsydra, and of course Metamorphosis. The last one was founded some twenty years ago by singer/keyboardist Jean-Pierre Schenk, he is the only one who never left the band. Jean-Pierre’s private life influences his music, hard times result in harder and more complicated music. I’m Not A Hero’ is their first album released under the Progressive Promotion Records label.
‘Dark World’ has a quiet start. By means of the guitar play of Olivier Guenat, the music becomes more intense, but not faster. In the end, the gloomy lyrics, half spoken and half sung by Jean-Pierre, is a silencer. The guitar play is a fine combination with the bass. The drums sound a bit grubby, but that’s okay here. The tempo is slow, but steady. This suits the whispering words, and the special sounds of the music. Despite the beautiful melody, the atmosphere remains somewhat gloomy, and you are drawn to listen intensely. When the tempo increases, the music becomes a bit heavier. The touch of metal comes along with the lighter tones of the keyboards, this forms a fine melange. A distorted rhythmic sound follows, and then suddenly it’s quiet…What an impressive opening track.

The bass tones in ‘I’m Not A Hero’ are cool, they form a nice mix with the high (keyboard) tones. The turn is less spectacular than hoped for. At one point you can hear despair in the (slow) singing. The tones of the keyboard often keeping on, usually they can be heard in the background. The emotion is also expressed by the guitar playing, the end dies away nicely. The words in ‘Little Stars Desintegrate’ sound caring, the atmosphere is a bit lighter than in the previous tracks. Vocals and music are balanced everywhere, also instrumentally everything is well balanced, the melodies are beautiful. A part of the lyrics is sung over again in a number of songs, but it doesn’t feel like a repetition. In the vocals, there is not much variation in pitch and volume. Most of the lyrics are in between talking and singing. The intense guitar play is mainly heard during the instrumental pieces.

In ‘I Will Leave Tonight’ the slightly symphonic elements of, for example, the sound of string instruments and wordless choir singing are unexpected, but very well chosen. There is a beautiful twist to more tempo and volume, the music becomes clearly heavier; yet the classical influences remain present for a while. The intro of ‘Leftovers’ is compelling, the lyrics almost depressing. The main character seems to look back on his life with melancholy, yet the gloomy feeling is not dominant. The last sentences are sung in an impressive way.

So Hard’s The Road’ has an atmospheric start, the guitar playing that accompanies it gives me goose bumps. You can notice from the lyrics that this is the last song, it doesn’t sound optimistic. Life was/is not easy. Regret and resentment seem to dominate during his reflections. Like most songs, this one ends with a slow fade out.

In terms of vocals and atmosphere, there are some small similarities to ‘Blackstar’, David Bowie’s final album, but it does not have the same intensity. Still, you can hear various emotions in it, to which you can give your own interpretation. Maybe you can hear resignation one moment, dejection the next. Anyway, the lyrics are thought-provoking. The keyboards are important, but the bass and guitar get all the space they need. The guitar play is often intense, you regularly hear the thick sound of the bass. In general, the sound is a bit on the dull side, but it suits the sober atmosphere of the whole. I’m Not A Hero’ is a very enjoyable melancholic album.

Metamorphosis – I’m Not A Hero

Er zijn niet zo heel veel prog rockbands uit Zwitserland, toch zijn er wel een paar waaronder Clepsydra, en natuurlijk Metamorphosis. Deze laatste werd zo’n twintig jaar geleden opgericht door zanger/toetsenist Jean-Pierre Schenk, hij is de enige die de band nooit verlaten heeft. Het privéleven van Jean-Pierre heeft invloed op zijn muziek, moeilijke tijden zorgen voor hardere en gecompliceerdere muziek. ‘I’m Not A Hero’ is hun eerste album dat onder het label Progressive Promotion Records uit is gebracht.

‘Dark World’ heeft een rustige start. Door het gitaarspel van Olivier Guenat wordt de muziek intenser, maar niet sneller. Op den duur wordt je even stil van de sombere tekst, die half gesproken en half gezongen wordt door Jean-Pierre. Het gitaarspel vormt een prima combinatie met de bas. De drums klinken wat groezelig, maar dat mag hier. Het tempo hiervan is langzaam, maar steady. Dit past bij de fluisterende woorden, en bij de bijzondere klanken van de muziek. Ondanks de mooie melodie blijft de sfeer wat somber, en je wordt aangezet om intens te luisteren. Als het tempo omhoog gaat, wordt de muziek iets zwaarder. Het vleugje metal klinkt gelijk met de lichtere tonen van de toetsen, dit vormt een prima melange. Er volgt een vervormd ritmisch geluid, en dan ineens is het stil..Wat een indrukwekkend openingsnummer.

De bastonen in ‘I’m Not A Hero’ zijn gaaf, ze vormen een mooi mix met de hoge (keyboard)tonen.
De wending verloopt wat minder spectaculair dan gehoopt. Op een gegeven moment hoor je wanhoop in de (langzame) zang. De tonen van de keyboard houden regelmatig lang aan, meestal zijn ze dan achtergrond te horen. De emotie komt ook tot uiting door het gitaarspel, het einde sterft mooi weg.
De woorden in ‘Little Stars Desintegrate’ klinken zorgzaam, de sfeer is wat lichter dan in de voorgaande nummers.

Zang en muziek zijn overal in balans, ook instrumentaal is alles goed in evenwicht, de melodieën zijn mooi. Een deel van de tekst wordt in een aantal nummers nogmaals gezongen, maar het voelt niet als een herhaling. In de zang is er niet heel veel variatie te hoen in toonhoogte en volume. Het grootste deel van de tekst zit tussen praten en zingen in. Het intense gitaarspel hoor je vooral tijdens de instrumentale stukken.

In ‘I Will Leave Tonight’ zijn de licht symfonische elementen van onder andere het geluid van strijkinstrumenten en woordeloze koorzang onverwacht, maar zeer goed gekozen. Er is een mooie wending naar meer tempo en volume, de muziek wordt duidelijk zwaarder; toch blijven de klassieke invloeden nog even aanwezig. Het intro van ‘Leftovers’ is meeslepend, de tekst is bijna deprimerend.
De hoofdpersoon lijkt met melancholie terug te kijken op zijn leven, toch is het sombere gevoel niet overheersend. De laatste zinnen zijn op een indrukwekkende manier gezongen.

‘So Hard’s The Road’ heeft een sferische start, het gitaarspel wat erbij komt geeft me kippenvel.
Je merkt aan de tekst dat dit het laatste nummer is, optimistisch klinkt het allemaal niet.
Het leven was/is niet makkelijk.. spijt en wrevel lijken te overheersen tijdens zijn overpeinzingen. Net als de meeste nummers, eindigt ook dit nummer met een langzame fade out.

Qua zang en sfeer zijn er enkele kleine raakvlakken met ‘Blackstar’, het laatste album David Bowie, maar het heeft niet dezelfde intensiteit. Toch kun er diverse emoties in horen, waar je je eigen interpretatie aan kan geven. Misschien hoor je er de ene keer berusting in, op een ander moment verslagenheid. Hoe dan ook de teksten zetten aan tot nadenken. De keyboards zijn belangrijk, toch krijgen ook de bas en gitaar alle ruimte. Het gitaarspel is vaak intens, de bas is regelmatig lekker dit aangezet. Over het algemeen is het geluid iets aan de doffe kant, maar op zich past het wel bij de het sobere sfeer van het geheel. ’I’m Not A Hero’ is een aangenaam melancholisch album.
