Singer Melanie Mau and singer/guitarist Martin Schnella are quite productive. They play in a number of bands, including their own band Flaming Row. This couple also releases albums under their own name: last summer, this was ‘Through The Decades’, which was filled with covers from various decades. At the end of last year, they released ‘Crowdless Sessions’. This is a live DVD/CD with their own songs, played by their band. Again in their own style of a mix of folk and prog rock.

CD:
From Flaming Row they play ‘Aim L45’, the atmospheric start is calmer here. The combination of percussion and acoustic guitar playing is very good. So is the blend of the voices. The clear voice of Mathias Ruck forms a nice combination with the vocals of Melanie. Martin has a friendly sound in his voice. Whether you hear one, two or three voices, the vocals are constantly in harmony with the music. The layers are well distributed on the headphones and the sound quality is, as always, very good. This passes almost seamlessly to ‘The Pure Shine – Medley’. Especially with the a capella vocals, the polyphonic singing stands out positively. Because of the good sound quality, you can clearly hear the different timbres in the percussion. The beautiful details and the clear sound of the guitar play also come into their own. This Flaming Row medley lasts over 26 minutes. In general, there is enough variation in tempo and volume. Some parts are minimalistic, others are slightly exhilarating. Most changes in vocals and music flow smoothly into one another. This is followed by four of their own songs, including ‘My Dear Children’. Here too, everything is in balance. The bass is pleasantly audible. The division between vocal and instrumental pieces is fine.

One of the songs sung in German is ‘In Dieser Zeit’. The album comes with a nice photo booklet, which does not contain the lyrics. Just reading along in the booklet is not an option.
But if you can understand a bit of German, you can understand most of it. It was written during the first lockdown. The song has a positive message that we will get through this together, and that it will get better in the future.
The structure and the quiet atmosphere of the songs make it easy to chill out, it’s a comfortable listen. You would almost forget that some parts are quite complex. Every song has some nice things, like the a capella vocals in ‘The Spire And The Old Bridge’ and the details in percussion in ‘Treasured memories’. ‘Close to Heart’ has beautiful clear sounds in the intro. The lyrics are sensitive and clearly sung. The vocals briefly go against each other, but the atmosphere of this song is preserved. Tempo and volume increase for a moment, to end on a beautiful small note. ‘Erinnerungen’ is a fine melancholic song. Because there is no audience, you don’t really get the live experience. But even without a real live feeling, you can enjoy this subdued album, where now and then the rock is also nicely present.

DVD:
Abbey Session (2020)
The basic setting of the light and the quiet changes of images fit the whole. On the CD, you could already hear it, but on the DVD, you see the passion and power especially in Melanie. Sometimes I miss a purposeful close-up, for example of the percussion. Simon Schröder sometimes plays with sticks, sometimes with his hands on the various drums.
At the moments where it is possible in the music, some band members make a little to less contact with the camera. A performance without an audience, and therefore without applause, feels a little unreal. The mutual harmony between the band members is clearly visible. You can see their love for the music, and they show that they are used to playing live.

The same goes for ‘TV Session (2019)’. Here there is partly a different line up, the whole thing is smaller in scale. The set elements are retro, in the background the calm light has a modern, contrasting look. Because the track list of the CD and DVD is different, it remains fun to listen to/watch.

The bonus consists of an interview. This is in German, and not nearly everything is subtitled, so it is not possible for everyone to follow. There are also official videos as a bonus. These are modest but carefully made and fit the songs. The Horseshoe was filmed in the Harz Mountains in Germany. The song is based on a fairy tale about a princess who was chased by a giant. She fled from the giant by sprinting away on her magic horse. The giant fell into the river during his chase and drowned. Then she jumped with her horse over some mountains. The other clips are fun to watch, especially ‘My Dear Children’. In ‘Die Zwerge Vom Iberg’ you can hear Jimmy Keegan (ex Spock’s Beard) as guest drummer. Because of the quiet set-up, it’s great to watch the DVD in a relaxed way.

Melanie Mau & Martin Schnella – Crowdless Sessions – LIVE DVD/CD

Zangeres Melanie Mau en zanger/gitarist Martin Schnella zijn behoorlijk productief. Ze spelen in een aantal bands, waaronder hun eigen band Flaming Row. Dit paar brengt ook onder hun eigen naam albums uit: afgelopen zomer was dat ‘Through The Decades’, deze was gevuld met covers uit diverse decennia. Eind vorig jaar brachten ze ‘Crowdless Sessions’ uit. Dit is een live DVD/CD met eigen nummers, gespeeld door hun band. Ook nu weer in hun eigen stijl van een mix van folk en prog rock.

CD:
Van Flaming Row spelen ze ‘Aim L45’, de sfeervolle start is hier kalmer. De combinatie van percussie en akoestisch gitaarspel is zeer goed. Dat geldt ook voor de blend van de stemmen. De heldere stem Mathias Ruck vormt een mooie combinatie met de zang van Melanie. Martin heeft een vriendelijke klank in zijn stem. Of je nu één, twee of drie stemmen hoort, de zang is constant in harmonie met de muziek. De laagjes zijn goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon, bovendien is de geluidskwaliteit zoals altijd zeer goed. Dit gaat bijna naadloos over naar ‘The Pure Shine – Medley’. Vooral bij de a capella zang valt de meerstemmige zang positief op. Door de goede geluidskwaliteit hoor de duidelijk verschillende klankkleuren in de percussie. De mooie details en de heldere klank van het gitaarspel komen ook goed tot hun recht. Deze Flaming Row medley duurt ruim 26 minuten. Over het algemeen is er genoeg variatie in tempo en volume. Sommige delen zijn minimalistisch, andere stukken zijn licht opzwepend. De meeste veranderingen in zang en muziek lopen vloeiend in elkaar over. Hierna volgen vier eigen nummers, waaronder ‘My Dear Children’. Ook hier is alles in balans. De bas is aangenaam goed te horen. De verdeling tussen vocale en instrumentale stukken is prima.

Eén van de nummers die in het Duits gezongen is, is ‘In Dieser Zeit’. Bij het album zit een mooi fotoboekje, waar de teksten niet instaan. Even meelezen in het boekje zit er niet in.
Maar voor wie een beetje Duits kan verstaan, is het grotendeels te volgen. Het is geschreven tijdens de eerste lockdown. Het nummer heeft een positieve boodschap dat we er samen doorheen komen, en dat het in de toekomst beter wordt.
Door de structuur en de rustige ‘uitstraling’ van de nummers is het heerlijk chillen, het luistert comfortabel weg. Daardoor zou je bijna vergeten dat sommige delen best complex in elkaar zitten. Ieder nummer heeft mooie dingen, zoals de a capella zang in ‘The Spire And The Old Bridge’ en de details in percussie in ‘Treasured memories’. ‘Close to Heart’ heeft prachtige heldere klanken bij het intro. De tekst is gevoelig en duidelijk gezongen. De zang gaat even tegen elkaar in, maar de sfeer van dit nummer blijft bewaard. Tempo en volume nemen even toe, om een daarna prachtig klein te eindigen. ‘Erinnerungen’ is een prima melancholisch nummer. Doordat er geen publiek bij is, krijg je de live beleving niet echt mee. Maar ook zonder echt live gevoel kun je genieten van deze ingetogen cd, waar zo nu en dan de rock ook lekker aanwezig is.

DVD:
Abbey Session (2020)
De eenvoudige setting van het licht, en de rustige wisselingen van de beelden passen bij het geheel. Op de cd hoorde je het al, maar op de dvd zie je de passie en de kracht vooral bij Melanie. Soms mis ik een doelgerichte close up, bijvoorbeeld van de percussie. Simon Schröder speelt soms met stokken, soms met zijn handen op de verschillende trommels.
Op de momenten waar het in de muziek wel mogelijk is, maken sommige bandleden iets te weinig contact met de camera. Een optreden zonder publiek, dus ook zonder applaus, voelt een beetje onwerkelijk. De onderlinge harmonie tussen de bandleden is duidelijk zichtbaar. Je ziet hun liefde voor de muziek, en ze laten zien dat ze gewend zijn om live te spelen.

Dat geldt ook voor ‘TV Session (2019)’. Hier is er deels een andere line up, het geheel is kleiner van opzet. De decorstukken zijn retro, op de achtergrond heeft het rustige licht een moderne, contrasterende uitstraling. Doordat de tracklist van de cd en dvd anders is, blijft het leuk om naar te luisteren/kijken.

De bonus bestaat uit een interview. Deze is in het Duits, en lang niet alles is ondertiteld, dat is dus niet voor iedereen te volgen. Daarnaast zijn er nog officiële video’s als bonus. Deze zijn eenvoudig maar met zorg gemaakt en passen bij de nummers. ‘The Horseshoe is gefilmd in het Harz gebergte in Duitsland. Het nummer is gebaseerd op een sprookje over een prinses die achterna gezeten werd door een reus. Ze vluchtte voor de reus door weg te sprinten op haar magisch paard. De reus viel tijdens zijn achtervolging in de rivier en verdronk. Daarna sprong ze met haar paard over een aantal bergen. De overig clips zijn leuk om naar te kijken, dat geldt zeker voor ‘My Dear Children’. In ‘Die Zwerge Vom Iberg’ hoor je Jimmy Keegan (ex Spock’s Beard) als gast drummer. Door de rustige opzet is het heerlijk om op een ontspannen manier naar de DVD te kijken.
