In 1999 ‘Three times deeper’ (TTD) was released, this was the first concept album by Karibow. At that time, it was a one man project of Oliver Rüsing. Because of Oliver’s perseverance, Karibow has become a well-known name in the prog world. Meanwhile, he has a permanent band. Yet, for TTD, he re-recorded and sang everything himself. The only guest is Elijah-Tobden Rüsing for the radio voice. Besides the usual instruments like (bass) guitar, drums and keyboards, Oliver also uses all kinds of ‘strange’ objects to make music. The original album lasted 34 minutes. Because of new ideas, it grew to 63 minutes.

If you can expect anything with Karibow, it is that you never know what to expect. The album begins with various country sounds, such as a crowing rooster, footsteps, and spherical music. There is a conversation between a child and a mumbling absent-minded father. They are seen by a man with a strange, deep voice. This man says that he will show mercy to the father and the child. He will tell stories. Then they may decide whether they want to stay, or whether it is better to run.
Although you can clearly notice that different people are speaking, the difference in voice between the father and the man could have been a bit bigger. ‘Lose Your Way’ is a real opening track, it is an introduction to the album. ‘World Designs’ has an instrumental intro. Pretty soon you hear the recognizable singing voice of Oliver. Now and then you hear the words of the narrator, but his speech is not too long. Regularly the guitar play stands out in a positive way. This epic has a lot of pleasant twists and details, including cymbals and piano sounds. ‘The Lame and the Flyer’ and ‘Greed’ are also well constructed.

‘Echoes’ is a song that consists of three parts. At the beginning of ‘Ache’ (Echoes Part I) you can hear a car braking, after which it crashes (not too hard), sirens and a few other sounds. The storyteller speaks again, this is alternated with singing and/or music. The music is very varied, some parts are nice and rocking with delicious screaming guitar work. Non-stop follows ‘The Code (Echoes Part II)’, the sound is and remains well distributed over the headphones. There is a good harmony between the spoken sentences and the rocking, exhilarating continuation of this song. Yet there are also some calmer pieces interwoven. In one of them, some words of the son return (in the background). The transition to ‘Ode (Echoes Part III)’ is seamless. Oliver sings in a beautiful, fragile way, the quiet music suits perfectly. The build-up to more tempo and volume is good, again the guitar playing stands out in a positive way. All together, these three parts last twenty minutes, but it feels much shorter.

Finally, the acoustic version of ‘The Lame and the Flyer’. The spoken words are: “This is the end, the sweet history repeats it self”. Fans know that Karibow have often played very good acoustic versions, and this one is no different.
Oliver did not only sing and play everything himself, he also mixed and mastered ‘Three times deeper’ himself. It was a huge job, but this productive man is used to that. You can hear that, because Karibow has made another very good album.

Karibow – Three times deeper

In 1999 verscheen ‘Three times deeper’ (TTD), dit was het eerste conceptalbum van Karibow. Toen was dit een one man project van Oliver Rüsing. Door de volharding van Oliver is Karibow een bekende naam in de prog wereld geworden. Inmiddels heeft hij een vaste band. Toch heeft hij voor TTD alles zèlf opnieuw ingespeeld en gezongen. De enige gast is Elijah-Tobden Rüsing voor de radiostem. Naast de gebruikelijke instrumenten zoals (bas)gitaar, drums en toetsen, maakt Oliver ook gebruik van allerlei ‘vreemde’ voorwerpen om muziek uit te halen. Het oorspronkelijke album duurde 34 minuten. Doordat er nieuwe ideeën bijkwamen is dit uitgegroeid tot 63 minuten.

Als je iets kan verwachten bij Karibow, is dat je nooit weet wàt je kan verwachten. Zo begint het album met diverse landelijke geluiden van onder andere een kraaiende haan, voetstappen, en sferische muziek. Er is een gesprek tussen een kind en een mompelende, verstrooide vader. Ze worden gezien door een man met een vreemde, zware stem. Deze man zegt dat hij genade zal tonen aan de vader en het kind. Hij zal verhalen vertellen. Daarna mogen ze beslissen of ze willen blijven, of dat het beter is om te vluchten.
Hoewel je goed in de gaten hebt dat er door verschillende personen gesproken wordt, had het verschil in stem tussen de vader en de man iets groter mogen zijn. ‘Lose Your Way’ is een echte openingstrack, het is een inleiding voor het album. ‘World Designs’ heeft een instrumentaal intro. Vrij snel hoor je de herkenbare zangstem van Oliver. Af en toe hoor je de woorden van de verteller, maar zijn betoog is niet te lang. Regelmatig springt het gitaarspel er positief uit. Deze epic heeft aangenaam veel wendingen en details, onder andere van cimbalen en pianoklanken. Ook ‘The Lame and the Flyer’ en ‘Greed’ zijn goed opgebouwd.

‘Echoes’ is een nummer dat bestaat uit drie delen. Aan het begin van ‘Ache’ (Echoes Part I) hoor je een auto remmen, waarna hij (niet al te hard) botst, er klinken sirenes en nog en
een aantal geluiden. De storyteller komt weer aan het woord, dit wordt afgewisseld met zang en/of muziek. De muziek is zeer gevarieerd, sommige delen zijn lekker rockend met heerlijk gillend gitaarwerk. Non stop volgt ‘The Code (Echoes Part II)’, het geluid is en blijft goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Er is een goede harmonie tussen de gesproken zinnen, en het rockende, opzwepende vervolg van dit nummer. Toch zitten er ook enkele kalmere stukjes in verweven. In één ervan komen (op de achtergrond) enkele woorden van het zoontje terug. De overgang naar ‘Ode (Echoes Part III)’ verloopt naadloos. Oliver zingt mooi breekbaar, de rustige muziek past hier prima bij. De opbouw naar meer tempo en volume is goed, weer valt het gitaarspel positief op. Bij elkaar duren deze drie delen twintig minuten, maar dat voelt veel korter.

Tot slot de akoestische versie van ‘The Lame and the Flyer’. De gesproken woorden zijn: “This is the end, the sweet history repeats it self”. Fans weten dat Karibow vaker zeer goede akoestische versies heeft neergezet, en dat is nu niet anders.
Oliver heeft niet alleen zelf alles ingezongen en gespeeld, hij heeft Three times deeper’ ook zelf gemixt en gemastered. Daar heeft hij een monsterklus aan gehad, maar dat is deze productieve man wel gewend. Dat is te horen, want Karibow heeft weer een zeer goed album gemaakt.
