Swedish progressive folk-fusion-rock band Kaipa recently released their 14th studio album. With “Urskog,” Kaipa takes you on a journey through the wilderness of Sweden and through the seasons. Hans Lundin used some sampled sounds from the 80s for this album. Perhaps more importantly, Darby Todd is the new drummer. He has played with Devin Townsend and Gary Moore, among others; he is skilled at everything from death metal to soft jazz.

‘The Frozen Dead Of The Night’ starts with beautiful intense vocals and light classical music. It’s gloomy, you can almost feel the long cold winter. Slowly the number of layers in the music increases. At the end of the winter, the tempo and volume of the music increases. Then the drums join in, you can hear the pitch differences of the drums. During the first beautiful instrumental piece, the keyboard sounds, among others, come out beautifully. The stacked vocals have a somewhat sweet sound, but that suits the spring. The balance between instrumental parts and vocal parts is fine. Especially in the instrumental parts, the twists and turns and the various styles flow nicely into each other. The sound is clear and the sound is well distributed on the headphones. This well constructed epic feels like a rock opera, the ending is a bit predictable though.

The instrumental intro of ‘In A World Of Pines’ is captivating, the change of lead vocals is not at all disturbing because the harmony remains. Again, the division between vocals and music is fine. The same goes for the division between calmer music and parts with rocking elements. This second epic ends with power vocals. During ‘Urskog’ Kaipa takes you deep into the heart of the Swedish primeval forest. The sound of string instruments gives the title track a beautiful mysterious start. After that it’s mainly the drumming and the electric part of the keys that come to the foreground. In the Swedish-language vocals, the old folklore comes into the picture. There is not a lot of lyrics, but it is in harmony with the music. In the extended instrumental piece, there are plenty of twists and turns. The song is cut off a little too soon

The instrumental ‘Wilderness Excursion’ is a wonderful prog track. The violin playing regularly swirls through ‘In The Wastelands Of My Mind’. Everything in this song is beautifully lightly played and sung so that the whole thing has a summery feel. ‘The Bitter Setting Sun’ has a rousing proggy start. After a pleasantly extended instrumental piece, there is a cool change to a smaller piece. Immediately the vocals join in, stacked and unstacked. There is a fine balance between high and low notes. This final track marks the transition from summer to fall. The saxophone playing is a delightful addition. You have a lot to listen to, and yet it is very comfortable to listen to. You would almost forget that some of the pieces are quite complex. There are lots of details, like nice, short rests. After a portion of instrumental prog, the CD ends with slightly sweet sounding vocals.

These six songs are well constructed, there are numerous details, twists and change of styles. The instruments among themselves are very well balanced. The rhythm section is also featured extensively. Darby doesn’t only play his drums tremendously, but he also plays his cymbals in a very detailed way. Because of the good sound quality and the way it is distributed over the headphones, all the ear candy comes out extra well.
‘Urskog’ deserves a place in the top ten lists of 2022.

De Zweedse progressieve folk-fusion-rockband Kaipa bracht onlangs hun 14e studioalbum uit. Met ‘Urskog’ neemt Kaipa je mee op reis door de wildernis van Zweden en door de seizoenen. Hans Lundin heeft wat gesampelde geluiden uit de jaren ’80 gebruikt voor dit album. Misschien nog wel belangrijker: Darby Todd is de nieuwe drummer. Hij speelde onder andere met Devin Townsend en Gary Moore, hij kan alles van death metal tot soft jazz.

‘The Frozen Dead Of The Night’ start met prachtige intense zang en licht klassieke muziek. Het is somber, je voelt bijna de lange koude winter. Langzaam neemt het aantal laagjes in de muziek toe. Aan het eind van de winter neemt nemen tempo en volume van de muziek toe. Dan komen de drums erbij, je hoort de toonhoogte verschillen van de drums. Tijdens het eerste prachtige instrumentale stuk komen onder andere de keyboard klanken mooi naar voren. De gestapelde zang is wat zoet van klank, maar dat past bij de lente. De balans tussen instrumentale delen en vocale delen is prima. Vooral in de instrumentale delen vloeien de wendingen en de diverse stijlen mooi in elkaar over. Het geluid is helder en het geheel is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Deze goed opgebouwde epic voelt aan als een rock opera, het einde is wel een beetje voorspelbaar.

Het instrumentale intro van ‘In A World Of Pines’ is boeiend, de wisseling van leadzang is totaal niet storend want de harmonie blijft. Weer is de verdeling tussen zang en muziek prima. Datzelfde geldt voor de verdeling tussen rustigere muziek en ee delen met rockende elementen. Met power volle zang eindigt deze tweede epic. Tijdens ‘Urskog’ neemt Kaipa je mee tot diep in het hart van het Zweedse oerbos. Het geluid van strijkinstrumenten zorgt dat de titeltrack een prachtige mysterieuze start heeft. Daarna komen vooral het drumwerk en de elektrische kant van de toetsen naar de voorgrond. In de Zweedstalige zang komt de oude folklore aan bod. Er is niet heel veel tekst, maar het is in harmonie met de muziek. In het uitgebreide instrumentale stuk zijn er volop wendingen. Het nummer is iets te vroeg afgekapt.

Het instrumentale ‘Wilderness Excursion’ is een heerlijk prog nummer. Het vioolspel dwarrelt regelmatig door ‘In The Wastelands Of My Mind’ heen. Alles in dit nummer is mooi licht gespeeld en gezongen zodat het geheel een zomerse sfeer heeft. ‘The Bitter Setting Sun’ heeft een opzwepende proggy start. Na een aangenaam uitgebreid instrumentaal stuk volgt een gave wending naar een kleiner gespeeld stuk. Meteen komt de zang erbij, al dan niet gestapeld. Er is een prima balans tussen hoge en lage tonen. Dit laatste nummer vormt de overgang van de zomer naar de herfst. Het saxofoonspel is een heerlijke aanvulling. Je hebt veel om naar te luisteren, en toch is het heel comfortabel om naar te luisteren. Je zou bijna vergeten dat sommige stukken best complex zijn. Er zijn veel details, zoals leuke, korte rusten. Na een portie instrumentale prog eindigt de cd met iets zoet klinkende zang.

Deze zes nummers zijn goed opgebouwd, er zijn talloze details, wendingen en verandering van stijlen. De instrumenten onderling zijn zeer goed verdeeld. Ook de ritmesectie komt ruimschoots aan bod. Darby bespeelt niet alleen zijn drums enorm goed, maar ook zijn cimbalen bespeelt hij zeer gedetailleerd. Door de goede geluidskwaliteit en de manier waarop het over de koptelefoon verdeeld is, komt al de ear candy extra goed tot zijn recht.
‘Urskog’ verdient een plaats in de top tien lijstjes van 2022.
