Hekz is an international prog rock/metal band, Terra Nova is their fourth album. In a nutshell, this double album is about the personal struggle regarding ambition, duality and personal development.

Part one of the title track has a catchy opening. Frontman Matt Young’s voice is less heavy than you might expect in this genre, but he has a clear pronunciation. The violin blends with the heavier tones of (bass) guitar. There are tightly played pieces as well as melodic parts with cool guitar playing. A turn in ‘Sabotage’ may sound like a drop-out, but the timing (in relation to the lyrics) is too good for that. The rest of the changes are fine. The intro to ‘Horizons’ is tight. The short minimalist piece in about the middle is surprising. At times there are quite a lot of layers in the music, sometimes you can also hear several layers in the vocals. The tempo in ‘Mayday’ is mostly high, but the drumming remains dynamic. Vocal parts are interspersed with instrumental pieces, which contain various twists. An occasional word is “grunted”. The small played ending is well chosen. This flows into “So Far So Gone”. This quiet track is a great contrast to the frenetic nature of the previous one. Matt sings softly, he is accompanied by a touch of music. In the background, you can briefly hear the sound of the wind.

In ‘The Tower’, confidence seems to return. Vocals and music are quiet at first.
The “chaos” returns briefly in the music, and the vocals match this: a single phrase sounds grim. Then suddenly there is another lovely calm piece. Followed by a tightly played section. After spoken words, the tempo speeds up again. The songs are well constructed. The intros and outros are well thought out. Especially the end of ‘I Am The Thrall’ special . The sampling is very well spread across the headset.

‘The Silent Man’ has an instrumental, subdued start. Matt’s own voice emerges as he sings louder and higher. When he sings more quietly, you hear a different emotion on his voice, the string instruments and piano join in. The (stacked) vocals and music constantly form a unity. The music ranges from metal to very calm and “everything” in between. The horns come more to the fore, this forms a good mix/interchange with the metal. The acoustic guitar tones are unexpected, the vocals suitably subdued. A rest marks a change to more pace and volume. This epic has the allure of a rock opera.
In ‘Terra Nova II’, you can hear fingers gliding across the strings. You feel the emotion in vocals and music. When tempo and volume increase for a short while, it is mainly the guitar playing that touches me. With stacked vocals, this track and thus the album ends.

Matt shows various emotions in the way he sings. Even though his voice is not that heavy, he sings convincingly. In a single up-tempo part played, the sound of the drumming is a bit chilly at times. Otherwise, a lot of dynamics can be heard in the drumming. All the other musicians also play very well. The sound is well spread over the headset. The contrasts between high/low and loud/soft are large enough. In addition, there are quite a few changes in tempo. Each time it is surprising how the track will continue. The line-up is very different from the previous album Invicta (2018). This renewed sound is just fine! This renewed sound is just fine! ‘Terra Nova’ is a very good album. Hekz -Terra Nova

Hekz is een internationale prog rock/metalband, Terra Nova is hun vierde album. Dit dubbel album gaat kort gezegd over het persoonlijk gevecht met betrekking tot ambitie, dualiteit en persoonlijke ontwikkeling.

Deel één van de titeltrack heeft een pakkende opening. De stem van frontman Matt Young is minder zwaar dan je misschien zou verwachten in dit genre, maar hij heeft een duidelijke uitspraak. De viool vermengt zich met de zwaardere tonen van (bas)gitaar. Er zijn zowel strak gespeelde stukken als melodieuze delen met gaaf gitaarspel. Een wending in ’Sabotage’ lijkt op een drop-out, maar daar is de timing (met betrekking tot de tekst) te goed voor. De overige veranderingen verlopen prima. Het intro van ‘Horizons’ is strak. Het korte minimalistisch stukje in ongeveer het midden is verrassend. Met vlagen zijn er best veel laagjes in de muziek, soms hoor je ook meerdere laagjes in de zang. Het tempo in ‘Mayday’ ligt overwegend hoog, maar het drumwerk blijft dynamisch. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met instrumentale stukken, waar diverse wendingen in zitten. Een enkel woord wordt “gegrunt”. Het klein gespeelde eind is goed gekozen. Dit loopt over naar ‘So Far So Gone’. Deze rustige track vormt een groot contrast met de hectiek van de vorige. Matt zingt zacht, hij wordt begeleid door een vleugje muziek. Op de achtergrond hoor je even het geluid van de wind.

In ‘The Tower’ lijkt het vertrouwen terug te komen. Zang en muziek zijn in eerste instantie rustig.
De “chaos’ komt even terug in de muziek, de zang sluit hierbij aan: een enkele zin klinkt grimmig. Dan is er ineens weer een mooi kalm stukje. Gevolgd door een strak gespeeld deel. Na gesproken woorden vliegt het tempo weer omhoog. De nummers zijn goed opgebouwd. Er is goed nagedacht over de intro’s en de outro’s. Vooral het einde van ‘I Am The Thrall’ bijzonder . De sampling is zeer goed verdeeld over de headset.

‘The Silent Man’ heeft een instrumentale, ingetogen start. Matt’s eigen stemgeluid komt naar voren als hij luider en hoger zingt. Als hij zachter zingt hoor je een andere emotie op zijn stem, de strijkinstrumenten en piano gaan hierin mee. De (gestapelde) zang en muziek vormen constant een eenheid. De muziek varieert van metal naar heel kalm en “alles” wat er tussen zit. De blazers komen meer naar de voorgrond, dit vormt een goede mix/afwisseling met de metal. De akoestische gitaarklanken zijn onverwacht, de zang is passend ingetogen. Een rust luidt een verandering in naar meer tempo en volume. Deze epic heeft de allure van een rockopera.
In Terra Nova II’ hoor je de vingers over de snaren glijden. Je voelt de emotie in zang en muziek. Als tempo en volume korte tijd toenemen, is het vooral het gitaarspel dat me raakt. Met gestapelde zang eindigt deze track en daarmee ook de cd.

Matt laat diverse emoties horen in zijn manier van zingen. Ook al is zijn stem niet zo zwaar, hij zingt wel overtuigend. In een enkel up-tempo gespeeld deel is het geluid van het drumwerk soms wat kil. Verder is er veel dynamiek in het drummen te horen. Ook de andere muzikanten spelen zeer goed. Het geluid is goed verdeeld over de headset. De contrasten tussen hoog/laag en hard/zacht zijn groot genoeg. Daarnaast zijn er behoorlijk wat veranderingen in tempo. Steeds is het weer verrassend hoe de track verder zal gaan. De line-up is heel anders dan op het voorgaande album Invicta (2018). Deze vernieuwde sound bevalt prima! ‘Terra Nova’ is een zeer goed album. Via hun website en Bandcamp pagina kun je niet alleen een download of CD bestellen, maar ook een LP.
