Hekz is a prog rock/metal band from London. On ‘Mayday’, the first single from upcoming album ‘Terra Nova’, you could already hear the new direction Hekz has taken. When ‘Terra Nova’ will be released remains a surprise. What is already known is that it will be a double album. ‘Sabotage’, the second single, was released on 20 June. This song is about feelings of fear and doubt that sometimes make life quite difficult. The lead character is caught in his struggle to deal with this. He wants to break his old patterns and is looking for a new beginning. The intro is catchy and powerful, both in terms of music and vocals. You can hear the main character’s “struggle” reflected in Matt Young’s voice.
This delicious prog contains many layers. Partly due to the guest appearance of Nic Weaver, his contribution includes a full brass section. Pieter Beemsterboer’s keyboards are also pleasantly abundant. There are plenty of changes and details in the music, including cool bass grooves. The beautiful turn to violin playing by Irina Markevich surprises. Moyano El Buffalo drums in service of the song. Last but not least, is the fabulous, sometimes super fast guitar playing of Mark Bogert. The end of ‘Sabotage’ is sudden. All this makes me curious about the double album ‘Terra Nova’, which Hekz is going to release independently.

Hekz is een prog rock/metal band uit London. Op ‘Mayday’, de eerste single aankomende album ‘Terra Nova’, hoorde je al de nieuwe weg die Hekz ingeslagen is. Wanneer ‘Terra Nova’uit gaat komen blijft nog even een verrassing. Wat al wel bekend is, is dat dit een dubbel album gaat worden. ‘Sabotage’, de tweede singel, kwam 20 juni uit. Dit nummer gaat over gevoelens van angst en twijfel die het leven soms behoorlijk moeilijk maken. De hoofdpersoon zit gevangen in zijn strijd om hier mee om te gaan. Hij wil zijn oude patronen doorbreken en is op zoek naar een nieuw begin. Het intro is pakkend en krachtig, zowel qua muziek al qua zang. Je hoort het “gevecht” van de hoofdpersoon terug in de stem van Matt Young.
Deze heerlijke prog bevat veel laagjes. Onder andere door het gast optreden van Nic Weaver, zijn bijdrage bestaat uit een volledige kopersectie. Ook de toetsen van Pieter Beemsterboer zijn lekker veel aanwezig. Er zijn volop veranderingen en details in de muziek, waaronder gave bas grooves. De mooie wending naar het vioolspel van Irina Markevich verrassend. Moyano El Buffalo drumt in dienst van het nummer. Last but not least, is het gave, soms super snelle gitaarspel van Mark Bogert. Het einde van ‘Sabotage’ is plotseling. Dit alles maakt me nieuwsgierig naar het dubbelalbum ‘Terra Nova’, dat Hekz in eigen beheer uit gaat brengen.
