If you look at the cover of R3Design (ReDesign), it looks more like a CD ROM than a music CD. But prog lovers know that Force Of Progress is a German prog rock/metal project. The three band members all play a couple of keyboard instruments. Moreover Chris Grundmann and Markus Roth also play (bass)guitar. R3Design is their third (instrumental) album.

‘Ultra Conservation’ has an up-tempo start with a lot of keyboard work. Despite the sometimes-electronic sound of the keyboards, it is mainly metal related. At times it is a bit hectic, this song actually symbolizes the transition from ‘A secret place’ (their previous album) to ‘R3Design’. Between the up-tempo parts there are some quieter pieces, the sound of these is not always bright. Also, the sound of the cymbals in the up-tempo parts could have been better. The end of this opening track is nice and tight.

The start of ‘Viral Signs I – Ambassador Of Light’ is atmospheric. The acoustic guitar play forms a nice melange with the different sounds of the keyboards. Then the music goes in the direction of metal, this is alternated or mixed with piano sounds. The drums have a nice full sound but cymbals sound too tinny. The ticking sound of an (old) alarm clock comes back a few times, just like the wordless choir. Again, sparkling piano sounds are woven in between the metal. The metal content of the (bass) guitar forms a fine blend with the high notes of the keyboards. Also, now there is a good build-up to the end.

In ‘Viral Signs II – Incident 3030′ you can hear among others: the 70’s sound of the organ, some vocals and the added sound of sirens. Then there is appropriate restlessness in the music.
There are various twists and turns, the high notes in the music sometimes approach the sound of violins. In a subdued part, the “added noise” takes too much attention away from the beautiful guitar playing. A while later, the balance is back. Again, turns follow each other in high tempo. There are tightly played parts, alternated with up tempo and slowly played parts. In short, this is a good epic.

Redesign is about losing a loved one. From the busy times (first part), to the impact of mourning, and then rebuilding a new life. This title track starts with electronic sounds. At times, the keyboards sound nice and proggy. In the quite extended compelling part, the cymbals sound a lot more natural. For the last few minutes, tempo and volume go up. Then this last song ends (as the only one) with a fade out. This end simply belongs here.

Although the sound of the cymbals is not always clear and warm, Dennis Degen’s drumming is a real asset. The songs are constructed with care and each song ends nicely. There are numerous details, for example, subtly added choir singing. Some details you only hear after a few listens, and that’s one of the beautiful things of prog. On ‘R3Design’ you don’t only hear a lot of different keys, with all its different sounds. But there are also a lot of (cool) guitar solos. The melange between keys and strings is generally good.

Als je naar de cover van R3Design (ReDesign) kijkt, lijkt het meer op een cd ROM dan op een muziek CD. Maar prog lovers weten dat Force Of Progress een Duits prog rock/metal project is. De drie bandleden spelen allemaal een aantal toetsinstrumenten. Bovendien spelen Chris Grundmann en Markus Roth ook (bas)gitaar. R3Design is hun derde (instrumentale) album.

‘Ultra Conservation’ heeft een uptempo start met veel toetsenwerk. Ondanks de soms elektronische klank van de toetsen is het hoofdzakelijk metal gerelateerd. Met vlagen is het een beetje hectisch, dit nummer symboliseert eigenlijk de overgang van ‘A secret place’ (hun vorige album) naar R3Design. Tussen de uptempo delen zijn enkele rustigere stukjes ingelast, het geluid hiervan is niet altijd helder. Ook het geluid van de cimbalen in de up tempo stukken had beter gekund. Het einde is van dit openingsnummer is mooi strak.

De start van ‘Viral Signs I – Ambassador Of Light’ is sferisch. Het akoestische gitaarspel vormt een mooie melange met de verschillende klanken van de keyboards. Dan gaat muziek richting metal, dit wordt afgewisseld dan wel vermengd met pianoklanken. De drums zijn mooi vol van klank maar cimbalen klinken te blikkerig. Het geluid van een tikkende wekker komt, net als de woordeloze koorzang, een paar keer terug. Weer zijn er sprankelende pianoklanken tussen de metal ingeweven. Het metal gehalte van (bas)gitaar vormt een prima melange met de hoge tonen van de toetsen. Ook nu is er een goede opbouw naar het eind.

In ‘Viral Signs II – Incident 3030’ hoor je onder andere: de 70’s sound van het orgel, een beetje zang en het toegevoegde geluid van sirenes. Dan is er passende onrust in de muziek.
Er zijn diverse twists and turns, de hoge tonen in de muziek benaderen soms het geluid van violen. In een ingetogen deel haalt de ‘toegevoegde ruis’ te veel aandacht weg van het prachtige gitaarspel. Een poosje later is de balans weer terug. Weer volgen wendingen elkaar in hoog tempo op. Zo zijn er strak gespeeld stukken, afgewisseld met up tempo- en langzaam gespeelde delen. Kortom, dit is een goede epic.

Redesign gaat over het verliezen van een geliefde/geliefd persoon. Vanaf de drukke tijden (eerste deel), naar de impact van rouw, en vervolgens het weer opbouwen van en nieuw leven. Deze titeltrack start met elektronische geluidjes. Met vlagen klinken de toetsen lekker proggy. In het vrij uitgebreide meeslepende deel klinken de cimbalen een stuk natuurlijker. Voor de laatste minuutjes gaan tempo en volume omhoog. Dan eindigt dit laatste nummer (als enige) in met fade out. Dit einde hóórt hier gewoon bij.

Hoewel het geluid van de cimbalen niet altijd helder en warm is, is het drumwerk van Dennis Degen een echte aanwinst. De nummers zijn met zorg opgebouwd en ieder nummer eindigt mooi. Er zijn talloze details, bijvoorbeeld subtiel toegevoegde koorzang. Sommige details hoor je pas na een paar keer luisteren, en dat is één van de mooie dingen van prog. Op ‘R3Design’ hoor je niet alleen heel veel verschillende toetsen, met al zijn verschillende klanken. Maar er zijn ook aangenaam veel (gave) gitaar solo’s. De melange tussen toetsen en snaren is over het algemeen goed.
