Electric Mud is een studio project uit Hannover. Bassist/componist Hagen Bretschneider en multi-instrumentalist Nico Walser zijn de enige bandleden, ze spelen instrumentale prog rock, met artrock en Krautrock invloeden. Het vorige album ‘The Deconstruction Of Light’ is iets meer dan twee jaar oud. Deze muzikale beleving kreeg lovende recensies.
Hun vierde album ‘Quiet Days On Earth’ heeft maar liefst 15 nummers. Het eerste nummer heet ‘Aurora moon’ en start heel rustig met pianospel, sferische muziek en diverse geluiden. Er is mooi gespeeld met verdeling tussen links en recht in koptelefoon. Electric Mud neemt je als het ware mee op een muzikale reis. Allerlei wendingen vloeien in elkaar over, diverse instrumenten en/of sampling worden afgewisseld en/of gecombineerd. Hiermee hebben deze twee mannen een rustige melange gecreëerd. Na wat onweer dooft deze openingstrack mooi uit.
Zo goed als non-stop volgt ‘Silhouettes floating down a rain-slicked street’. Sommige hoge tonen benaderen de sfeer van vioolspel een beetje. De verschillende hoge tonen worden combineert met pianoklanken. Allerlei geluiden en wisselingen van klanken en instrumenten glijden naadloos in elkaar over. Hierdoor ontstaat een sereen karakter. Wanneer tempo en volume een beetje verhoogd worden, krijgt muziek iets meer pit.
‘Quiet days on earth’ start met mysterieuze geluiden en akoestisch gitaarspel
Er is een contante wisselwerking tussen ritmes, stijlen, geluiden en instrumenten. Jammer genoeg is het akoestisch gitaarspel soms iets te veel op de achtergrond. De elektronische geluiden zorgen voor een bijzondere wending.
Maar er komt nog veel meer voorbij, kabbelend water, geluid van fluitspel. Dus ondanks de rustige muziek, komt er best veel op je af. Het geluid is niet altijd helder of sprankelend, op de meeste momenten past het precies bij de sfeer. De mysterieuze muziek brengt je in een aangename rustige flow. De wat zwaardere delen zorgen voor een prima contrast.
Gedurende enkele minuten lopen diverse wendingen in ‘Adventures in a liquid world’ langzaam in elkaar over. Dan volgt er een stukje folkrock, dat langzaam een iets pittiger karakter krijgt. Weer vallen de wendingen en de vele details positief op. Alles is prima verdeeld over de koptelefoon.
Mysterieuze muziek en verschillende toegevoegde geluiden tijdens het intro van ’Sleeping under a green desert tree’. Een deel van de instrumenten is langzaam bespeeld, een ander deel iets sneller. Bovendien wordt er hierin gewisseld.
Dan is er een overstap naar een minimalist stuk, met het geluid van een cicade eindigt deze cd.
Dit is geen ‘ontspannings-cd’ toch brachten de afgelopen 78 minuten mij in een heerlijke relaxte flow. ‘Electric Mud’ heeft door de afwisselingen van stijlen een bijzonder melange gecreëerd. Een enkele keer verslapte mijn aandacht een beetje door de herhalingen. Maar steeds weer wist dit tweetal mijn aandacht terug te winnen. Niet alle nummers hebben een gedegen opbouw naar het einde. Als het gitaarspel wat overstuurd klonk, paste dat over het algemeen wel in he totaalbeeld.
Er zijn verschillen met hun vorige album. Het fantastische, meespelende gitaarspel van Nico en de vette bass grooves van Hagen zijn op ‘Quiet days on earth’ wat minder frequent te horen. Er is nu meer ruimte voor keyboards en bijzondere geluiden.
Maar er zijn ook overeenkomsten. Zo is er op beide albums een groot scala aan details, en het geluid van een glockenspiel is ook op beide albums te horen. Zonder op safe te spelen, is Electric Mud hun eigen stijl trouw gebleven.

The previous album ‘The Deconstruction Of Light‘ is just over two years old. This musical experience received rave reviews.
Their fourth album ‘Quiet Days On Earth‘ has no less than 15 songs. The first song is called ‘Aurora moon’ and starts very quietly with piano playing, atmospheric music and various sounds. There is played nicely with division between left and right in headphones. Electric Mud takes you on a musical journey. All kinds of twists and turns flow into each other, various instruments and / or sampling are alternated and / or combined. With this, these two men have created a quiet blend. After some thunderstorm this opening track extinguishes nicely.
Almost non-stop ‘Silhouettes floating down a rain-slicked street‘ follows. Some high tones approach the atmosphere of violin playing a bit. The different high tones are combined with piano sounds. All kinds of sounds and changes of sounds and instruments glide seamlessly into each other. This creates a serene character. When tempo and volume are raised a little, music gets a little more power.
‘Quiet days on earth‘ starts with mysterious sounds and acoustic guitar playing.
There is a constant interaction between rhythms, styles, sounds and instruments. Unfortunately, the sound of acoustic guitar playing is sometimes a bit too much in the background. The electronic sounds create a special twist.
But there is much more to come, rippling water, sound of flute playing. So, despite the quiet music, there is quite a lot coming your way. The sound is not always clear or sparkling, at most moments it fits exactly with the atmosphere. The mysterious music brings you in a pleasant quiet flow. The heavier parts provide a good contrast.
During a few minutes various twists and turns in ‘Adventures in a liquid world‘ slowly run into each other. Followed by a piece of folk rock, which slowly takes on a slightly heavier character. Again, the twists and turns and the many details stand out positively. Everything is well distributed over the headphones.
Mysterious music and several added sounds during the intro of ‘Sleeping under a green desert tree‘. Part of the instruments is played slowly, another part a bit faster. On top of that, there is a change in here.
Then there is a transition to a minimalist piece, with the sound of a cicada this cd ends.
This is not a ‘relaxation CD’ yet the past 78 minutes brought me in a lovely relaxed flow. ‘Electric Mud‘ has created a special blend through the alternation of styles. Occasionally my attention slackened a bit because of the repeats. But over and over again the two of them managed to regain my attention. Not all songs have a solid build-up towards the end. When the guitar playing sounded a bit
distorted, it generally fitted in the atmosphere.
There are differences with their previous album. The fantastic, compelling guitar playing of Nico and the stunning bass grooves of Hagen can be heard a bit less frequently on ‘Quiet days on earth‘. There is now more room for keyboards and special sounds.
But there are also similarities. On both albums there is a wide range of details, and the sound of a glockenspiel can be heard on both albums as well. Without playing on the safe side, Electric Mud has stayed loyal to their own style.
