Drifting Sun is a studio band from England. There have been a few line-up changes, but they continue to make complex, accessible prog.rock. ‘Veil’, their latest album, features a number of guest musicians, such as violinist Suzi James and some choir members.

Because of the minor crackles, ‘Veiled’ gives the impression of an old LP. The gentle music contains light classical elements. In this instrumental opening track, you can already hear the style of Drifting Sun. ‘Frailty’ has a lovely proggy start, in which the keys are important. In the beautiful, extended instrumental piece, you can hear lovely guitar playing. In addition, the rhythm section is pleasantly present. This transitions into a quieter section, which also contains lovely details. Jargon sings his words in a quiet manner. The choral vocals are sometimes brought in as instruments. The (stacked) vocals and the music constantly form a unity, moreover it is complex vocally and instrumentally. In the background, you occasionally hear violin playing. This epic has many twists and turns, most of them fairly gradual. There are also many details, far from all of which you hear right away. The epic ends with a echoing, layered and lingering tone.

The bright, warm vocals in ‘Eros and Psyche’ make a great combination with the light music. The various sounds of the keyboard instruments have an important part . Vocals and music remain in balance, even when the tempo and volume of the music increase. Vocal and instrumental parts alternate. The vocals are stacked at intervals. There is not only rocking guitar playing, but some sparkling acoustic guitar sounds can also be heard. The ending is quite unexpected. The intro of ‘The Thing’ is atmospheric. The (acoustic) guitar playing again stands out positively. The choral vocals are fine added, the sound is reverberant at times. But that’s okay on this rather quiet track. The rocking guitar playing, and the keys form a nice contrast to all the rest. The fade out is slightly unfortunate, perhaps.
‘2-Minute Waltz’ is a two-minute track with sparkling piano playing
There are fast keyboard sounds at the start of ‘Through the Veil’. The sound is well spread over the headphones. Even after a few twists and turns, the keys regularly remain an important part. The balance between keys and (bass) guitar is fine. Again, the drums are well played. The lyrics are not easy to fathom, although here you sing along a few phrases a bit sooner. After a fine instrumental piece, it dies away beautifully slowly. The combination of voices in ‘The Old Man’ is attractive. This track has both melancholic and prog rock/rock elements. ‘Cirkus’ has a special blend of rhythm and melody, the changes between these are captivating. This last track is also complex in concept. The wordless, stacked vocals are nicely added. The ending is unexpected, but beautiful.

It does take a while to get to know the tracks a bit. In general, the lyrics are not easy on you, but that is not what they are for. Mostly the violin merges with the rest of the music, in the quieter bits it can be heard more clearly. The number of layers in vocals and or music is quite large. All is well spread over the headphones. With the changed line-up are the quality and style of Drifting Sun remain!

Drifting Sun – Veil

Drifting Sun is een studio band uit Engeland. Er zijn enkele wisselingen geweest in de bezetting, maar ze bijven complexe, toegankelijke prog.rock maken. Op hun ‘Veil’, hun nieuwste album, zijn er een aantal gastmuzikanten te horen, zoals violiste Suzi James en enkele koorleden.

Door de lichte kraakjes geeft ‘Veiled’ het gevoel van een oude LP. De rustige muziek bevat licht klassieke elementen. In deze instrumentale openingstrack hoor je al de stijl van Drifting Sun. ‘Frailty’ heeft een heerlijke proggy start, waarin de toetsen belangrijk zijn. In het mooie, uitgebreide instrumentale stuk hoor je heerlijk gitaarspel. Daarnaast is de ritmesectie aangenaam aanwezig. Dit loopt over naar een rustiger deel, ook hierin zitten mooie details. Jargon zingt zijn woorden op een rustige manier. De koorzang is soms ingezet als instrument. De (gestapelde) zang en de muziek vormen constant een eenheid, bovendien zit het vocaal en instrumentaal complex in elkaar. Op de achtergrond hoor je af en toe vioolspel. Deze epic heeft veel wendingen, de meeste verlopen vrij geleidelijk. Daarnaast zijn er veel details, die je lang niet allemaal meteen hoort. Met een galmende, gelaagde en langaanhoudende toon eindigt deze epic.

De heldere, warme zang in ‘Eros and Psyche’ vormt een prima combinatie met de lichte muziek.
De diverse klanken van de toetsinstrumenten hebben een belangrijk aandeel. Zang en muziek bijven in balans, ook als het tempo en volume van de muziek toenemen. Vocale en instrumentale delen wisselen elkaar af. De zang is met vlagen gestapeld. Er is niet alleen rockend gitaarspel, maar er zijn ook enkele sprankelende akoestische gitaarklanken te horen. Het eind is vrij onverwacht. Het intro van ‘The Thing’ is sfeervol. Het (akoestische) gitaarspel valt weer positief op. De koorzang is prima toegevoegd, het geluid is soms galmend. Maar dat mag gerust bij deze vrij rustige track. Het rockende gitaarspel, en de toetsen vormen een mooi contrast met het geheel. De fade out is misschien een beetje jammer.
‘2-Minute Waltz’ is een track van twee minuten met sprankelend pianospel.

Er zijn snelle keyboard klanken bij aanvang van ‘Through the Veil’. Het geluid is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Ook na een paar wendingen blijven de toetsen regelmatig een belangrijk aandeel houden. De balans tussen toetsen en (bas)gitaar is prima. De drums zijn ook nu weer goed bespeeld. De tekst laat zich niet makkelijk doorgronden, al zing je hier enkele zinnen wat sneller mee. Na een prima instrumentaal stuk sterft het mooi langzaam weg. De combinatie van stemmen in ‘The Old Man’ is mooi. Deze track heeft zowel melancholisch als prog rock/rockende elementen. ‘Cirkus’ heeft een bijzondere melange van ritme en melodie, de veranderingen hiertussen zijn boeiend. Ook deze laatste track is complex van opzet. De woordeloze, gestapelde zang is leuk toegevoegd. Het einde is onverwacht, maar mooi.

Het duurt wel even voordat je de tracks een beetje kent. De teksten zijn je over het algemeen niet makkelijk mee, maar daar zijn ze niet voor bedoeld. Meestal smelt de viool samen met de overige muziek, in de rustigere stukje is het duidelijker te horen. Het aantal laagjes in zang en of muziek is best groot. Het geheel is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Met de veranderde line-up zijn de kwaliteit en de stijl van Drifting Sun gebleven!
