Doug Woods is well known in the iOS/iPad music world. He has been working with guitarist Colin Powell for about seven years now. Together they release one or two instrumental albums a year.
“The Chronicles of Mr. Denks and Mr. Klade – The Lost City’ is the second digital album that this duo will release this year. In ‘The Lost City’, Mr Denks and Mr Klade unexpectedly see a portal in Antarctica.
‘The Discovery’ has a mysterious start, the sound flows nicely back and forth in the headphones. The slow beat is clear and light in tone, and the soundscapes blend in well with the melody. The electronic sounds have been the leading role so far. The start of ‘The Expedition’ is even more mysterious. The beat is faster here, but still light in tone. Piano sounds and guitar playing are added to this. Unnoticed there are quite a few layers in the music. The mix or alternation between light rocking elements and the electronic sounds is fine. Mr Denks and Mr Klade arrive in ‘Antarctica’ after a long journey. The story is not easy to “depict” with music alone. The music certainly doesn’t sound summery, but it doesn’t give a very icy atmosphere either. On the one hand, it might provide accessibility. On the other hand, you are less drawn into the story. The guitar playing in ‘Snowbound’ forms a good harmony with the other sounds. If you listen with headphones, and you have the music quite loud, some (high) parts sound a bit sharp. Soundscapes and iOS/iPad music seem to play the leading role in ‘The Portal’. The whole remains mysterious, even when organ sounds are added.
‘The Lost City’ has a subdued start, certain parts of the melody are repeated. The two detectives have now arrived at the ice cave, the music is less mysterious. This change could be because they see lights in the distance. Subdued saxophone sounds give ‘Another World’ a nice quiet atmosphere. mr. Denks and Mr. Klade have clearly ended up in a different world. The music is different, but because the style fits, there is no dichotomy on the album. The austere sound of string instruments provides a touch of melancholy. The turn to “piano” is surprising, special sounds can be heard through this. ‘An Unexpected Encounter’ has quite a lot of repetitions. Some sounds resemble factory where robotic machines do the work. At a certain point this changes to spherical music with long lasting tones.
Without really seeing the story happen in front of you, you do notice changes in atmosphere. ‘Lost and Found’ has a bit of the atmosphere of a cold cave. But ‘A New Culture’ is more cheerful in nature. In this way we continue through the story, in which there is a good variety of all kinds of instruments or their sounds. Doug and Colin have made up a whole story around their instrumentals again. Or maybe they had written the story first and added music to it. Whatever the order, you have to like the electronic sounds to appreciate their music. The ratio between the whole is fine.
‘Rainbow Lightning’ contains warm sounds of guitar and piano, everything is added to this. The whole remains calm until it suddenly changes, the twist is well chosen. Tempo and volume of the music are quite high here, and there seems to be the sound of a Theremin. A while later the music is a bit quieter again. With instrumental numbers it is extra difficult to tell a story. With Treasured Memories, Doug and Coin depict the two traveling men returning home. Doug and Colin have made a nice end to this story. You probably won’t see any images of their journey in front of you. But you don’t have to see the story unfold in front of you to appreciate what you’re listening to. Because the sound quality is good, and that also applies to the blend and variety between the different music styles, sounds and soundscapes.

Doug Woods is een bekende in de muziekwereld van iOS/iPad. Sinds een jaar of zeven werkt hij samen met gitarist Colin Powell. Samen brengen ze één of twee instrumentale albums per jaar uit.
‘The Chronicles of Mr. Denks and Mr. Klade – The Lost City’ is het tweede digitale album dat dit duo dit jaar uitbrengt. Deze reeks gaat over Mr Denks and Mr Klade, twee Victoriaanse helderziende detectives. In ‘The Lost City’ zien Mr Denks and Mr Klade onverwacht een portaal in Antarctica.
‘The Discovery’ heeft een mysterieuze start, het geluid loopt leuk heen en weer in de koptelefoon. De langzame beat is helder en licht van klank, en de soundscapes vormen een prima geheel met de melodie. De elektronische klanken hebben tot nu toe de hoofdrol. De start van ‘The Expedition’ nog mysterieuzer. De beat is hier sneller, maar nog steeds licht van klank. Hier worden pianoklanken en gitaarspel aan toegevoegd. Ongemerkt zijn er best wat laagjes in de muziek. De melange dan wel afwisseling tussen licht rockende elementen en de elektronische klanken is prima. In ‘Antarctica’ komen de heren Mr Denks and Mr Klade na een lange reis aan. Het verhaal is niet makkelijk “uit te beelden” met alleen maar muziek. De muziek klinkt zeker niet ’s zomers, maar het geeft ook niet een hele ijzige sfeer. Aan de ene kant zorgt het misschien wel voor toegankelijkheid. Aan de andere kant word je minder het verhaal in getrokken. Het gitaarspel in ‘Snowbound’ vormt een goede harmonie met de overige klanken. Als je met koptelefoon luistert, en je hebt je de muziek vrij luid staan, klinken sommige (hoge) delen een beetje scherp. Soundscapes en iOS/iPad muziek lijken de hoofdrol te spelen in ‘The Portal’. Het geheel blijft mysterieus, ook als er orgelklanken bij komen.
‘The Lost City’ heeft een ingetogen start, bepaalde delen van de melodie worden herhaald. Inmiddels zijn de twee detectives aangekomen bij de ijsgrot, de muziek is wat minder mysterieus. Deze verandering zou kunnen komen omdat ze lichten in de verte zien. Ingetogen saxofoon klanken geven ‘Another World’ een mooie rustige sfeer. Mr. Denks and Mr. Klade zijn duidelijk in een andere wereld beland. De muziek is anders, maar doordat de stijl aansluit, is er geen tweedeling op het album. Het sobere geluid van strijkinstrumenten zorgt voor een vleugje melancholie. De wending naar “piano” is verrassend, hier doorheen klinken bijzondere geluiden.
‘An Unexpected Encounter’ heeft vrij veel herhalingen. Sommige geluiden lijken op fabriek waarin robotachtige machines het werk doen. Op een gegeven moment gaat dit over naar sferische muziek met langaanhoudende tonen.
Zonder dat je het verhaal echt voor je ziet gebeuren, merk je wel sfeer veranderingen. ’Lost and Found’ heeft een beetje de sfeer van een kille grot. Maar ‘A New Culture’ is vrolijker van aard.
Zo gaan we verder door het verhaal, waarin er een goede afwisseling is van allerlei instrumenten of de klanken ervan. Doug en Colin hebben weer een heel verhaal om hun instrumentale nummers verzonnen. Of misschien hadden ze eerst het verhaal en er muziek bij gemaakt. Hoe de volgorde ook is, je moet wel van de elektronische klanken houden om hun muziek te waarderen. De verhouding tussen het geheel is prima.
‘Rainbow Lightning’ bevat warme klanken van gitaar en piano, hier wordt van alles aan toegevoegd. Het geheel blijft rustig totdat het plotseling verandert, de wending is gaaf gekozen. Tempo en volume van de muziek liggen hier best hoog, en er lijkt het geluid van een Theremin te klinken. Een poosje later is de muziek weer wat rustiger. Met instrumentale nummers is het extra moeilijk om een verhaal te vertellen. ‘Met Treasured Memories’ beelden Doug en Coin uit dat de twee reizende mannen weer naar huis gaan. Doug en Colin hebben een mooi slot gemaakt aan dit verhaal. Je zult waarschijnlijk geen beelden voor je zien van hun reis. Maar je hoeft het verhaal niet voor je te zien gebeuren om te waarderen naar wat je luistert. Want de geluidskwaliteit is goed, en dat geldt ook voor de melange en afwisseling tussen de verschillende muziekstijlen, klanken en soundscapes.
