Ten years ago, multi-instrumentalist Jon Farley was diagnosed with the chronic disease sarcoidosis, which causes severe lung problems. By singing, he slowed down the decrease of his lung capacity. A few years ago, he founded ‘Checking For Echo Project’. Last year, his illness aggravated, he could hardly sing anymore. That is why he appealed to his network. This resulted in the (digital) album ‘Life & Other Short Stories: Vol 1’, which was released on 7 April. The leading theme of this prog album is social injustice, the structure of society, and conservative attitudes.

The bright vocals in ‘Stillborn’ are fragile and form a beautiful melange with the tender, dreamy music. In the background you hear, very softly, the sound of a ‘beating heart’. Light classical elements are woven into it. A thick bass is the start of a proggy instrumental piece. During the last quiet piece, you can hear the ‘beating heart’ in the background until the end. This song is not about a stillborn child, but about children who are born into poverty, which leads to social isolation. The rich put up extra barricades for the poor, in order to benefit themselves. In this way, these children become trapped; the word ‘still’ here in fact means immobile. Saline’ is a cover by Frost*, and although the original is clearly recognisable, this is its own version.

‘The Big Issue’ was created after Jon went to a Lifesigns gig in Edinburgh. He was shocked by the number of people he saw sleeping in porches. In the music, the emotion is conveyed by compelling guitar play. The hopelessness of the situation is well expressed by the slow vocals. At first sight, you might think that ‘When Tomorrow Comes’ is a cover of Eurythmics. But when you hear the piano sounds from the intro, you know that this is an original song. The soft (stacked) vocals fit the calm atmosphere of this song.

‘Seen But Never Heard’ has a cool staccato start. The added sampling in the background makes it clear that this is about domestic violence. The lyrics are about someone who ‘escapes’ violence in his childhood through dreams. The organ sounds and the striking vocals almost breathe a church atmosphere. This forms a special contrast with the theme, but accentuates the intangible the situation. During an instrumental, rocking piece, the tempo is quite high. The change to a small played and sung piece is beautiful, here the dreams are expressed.

‘Just Making Shore’ is an instrumental track about migrants risking their lives in a rickety boat, trying to reach a better life through the rough seas. This compelling song has a nice, slow fade out.
The IQ cover ‘Red Dust Shadow’ fits, just like the songs that follow, into the whole. Although ‘What About Us? ‘ is a bit sweet at times. With his warm voice, Andy Nixon sings ‘My Suit of Armour (Long Earth cover) very convincingly. Life & Other Short Stories’ starts with atmospheric music, at the same time several people speak a few (socially critical) sentences. Then the music dies away you hear, very softly, the sound of a ‘beating heart’. And then it is unexpectedly quiet… After amazement, admiration follows. It is a daring but successful choice to choose a title track that is so short.

Every song has a different singer. Yet the colours of these different voices fit well together. Although everyone will probably have his or her own favourite voice. The rocking parts are mainly in the instrumental pieces. The vocals are more in the (longer) calmer parts. This way, vocals and music are in constant harmony. The proceeds of this accessible album will be divided fairly between two organisations: one for musicians and the other for (small) live productions, which were hit hard by the corona crisis.

Checking For Echo Project – Life & Other Short Stories: Vol 1

Tien jaar geleden kreeg multi-instrumentalist Jon Farley de chronische ziekte sarcoïdose, wat ernstige longenproblemen veroorzaakt. Door te zingen vertraagde hij de afname van zijn longcapaciteit. Een paar jaar geleden richtte hij ‘Checking For Echo Project’ op. Vorig jaar verergerde zijn ziekte, hij kon nauwelijks meer zingen. Daarom deed hij een beroep op zijn netwerk. Met als resultaat, het (digitale) album ‘Life & Other Short Stories: Vol 1’, dat op 7 april uit kwam. Het leidend thema van dit prog album is de sociale onrechtvaardigheid, de structuur van de maatschappij, en de conservatieve houding.

De heldere zang in ‘Stillborn’ is breekbaar en vormt een mooie melange met de tedere, dromerige muziek. Op de achtergrond hoor je, heel zacht, het geluid van een ‘kloppend hartje’. Er worden licht klassieke elementen in verweven. Vette bas is het startschot voor een proggy instrumentaal stuk. Tijdens het laatste rustige stuk hoor je op de achtergrond het ‘kloppend hartje’ tot en met het einde. Dit nummer gaat niet over een doodgeboren kindje, maar over kinderen die in armoede geboren worden, waardoor ze in een sociaal isolement komen. De rijken werpen extra barricades voor de armen op, om er zelf beter van te worden. Zodoende komen deze kinderen vast te zitten, het Engelse woord ‘still’ betekent hier in feite immobiel. ‘Saline’ is een cover van Frost*, hoewel het origineel duidelijk te herkennen is, is dit toch een eigen versie.

‘The Big Issue’ is ontstaan nadat Jon naar een optreden van Lifesigns in Edinburgh ging. Hij geschokt was door het aantal mensen dat hij in portieken zag slapen. In de muziek wordt de emotie overgebracht door meeslepend gitaarspel. De uitzichtloosheid van de situatie komt goed naar voren door de trage zang. In eerste instantie zou je kunnen denken dat ‘When Tomorrow Comes’ een cover is van Eurythmics is. Maar als je de pianoklanken van het intro hoort, weet je dat dit een eigen nummer is. De zachte (gestapelde) zang past bij de kalme sfeer van dit nummer.

‘Seen But Never Heard’ heeft een gave staccato start. De toegevoegde sampling op de achtergrond maakt duidelijk dat het om huiselijk geweld gaat. De tekst gaat over iemand die in zijn kindertijd door middel van dromen ‘ontsnapt’ aan het geweld. De orgelklanken en de markante zang ademen bijna een kerkelijke sfeer uit. Dit vormt een bijzonder contrast met het thema, maar benadrukt het ongrijpbare van de situatie. Tijdens een instrumentaal, rockend stuk ligt het tempo flink hoog. De verandering naar een klein gespeeld en gezongen stuk is prachtig, hier worden de dromen verwoord.

‘Just Making Shore’ is een instrumentale track over migranten die hun leven riskeren om in een gammel bootje, via een ruwe zee, een beter leven proberen te bereiken. Dit meeslepende nummer heeft een mooie, langzame fade out.
De IQ cover ‘Red Dust Shadow’ past, net als de nummers die hierop volgen, in het geheel. Al is ‘What About Us?‘ soms wel een beetje zoet. Met zijn warme stem zingt Andy Nixon ‘My Suit of Armour (Long Earth cover) heel overtuigend. ‘Life & Other Short Stories’ start met sferische muziek, tegelijkertijd spreken verschillende mensen enkele (maatschappijkritische) zinnen. Dan sterft de muziek weg, heel zachtjes hoor je nog even het geluid van een ‘kloppend hartje’ wegsterven. En dan blijft het onverwacht stil… Na verwondering, volgt bewondering. Het is een gedurfde, maar geslaagde keuze om een titeltrack te kiezen die zo kort is.

Ieder nummer heeft een andere zanger/es. Toch passen de kleuren van deze verschillende stemmen goed bij elkaar. Al zal iedereen waarschijnlijk wel zijn of haar eigen favoriete stem hebben. De rockende delen zitten vooral in de instrumentale stukken. De zang zit wat meer in de (langere) kalmere delen. Zo zijn zang en muziek constant in harmonie. De opbrengsten van dit toegankelijke album zullen eerlijk worden verdeeld over twee organisaties: één voor muzikanten en de andere voor (kleine) live producties, die zwaar werden getroffen door de corona crisis.
