Blank Manuskript is an Art Rock band from Austria. All five band members have a part in vocals. The passion of these multi-instrumentalists can always be heard in their live concerts, as on ‘A Live Document’. This album was recorded last year during Night of the Prog – Loreley
The tender singing of ‘Foetus’ is sometimes narrative, at other times more intense. The vocals together are a fine blend. This subdued song flows into ‘Public Enemy’. After a calm start, there is a turn to more pace and volume. The balance between the instruments is fine. The sound quality, especially for an open-air concert, is good. As a result, the softly played cymbals and flute playing, among others, come into their own. The music is complex in structure, there are many (sudden) turns, often with crossovers to jazz. ‘The Cult of Birdman’ is a cool epic of over 16 minutes.
‘Twilight Peak’ not only has jazz influences, it also has an AC/DC-like bit in it. Both the organ and guitar playing are compelling. Certain parts are tightly sung, whether in (polyphonic) harmony or not. There are numerous details in the music. For a moment, this song seems to end, but it is a surprising change. Some pieces are played quite fast, others are minimalist. Every note is played with precision, the build-up to a compelling piece is fantastic. Blank Manuskript also maintains this quality in ‘After the War Part I’. In ‘After the War Part II’, I am once again touched by the guitar playing. After a very softly sung part, there is a nice build-up to more volume. The emotion can also be heard and felt in the saxophone playing. This epic ends very subdued.
It is almost unimaginable how perfectly everything is played. The lyrics are not sing-alongs, so the audience cannot be heard in ‘The Last Journey’ either. ‘Silent Departure’ has a tender, instrumental start. The whispered words fit in well with it. Again, harmony singing stands out positively. This song is fragile sung and played, the applause is very well deserved.
In the epic ‘Shared Isolation’, jazz returns. Tightly played parts are interspersed with melodic/ rocking elements, and/or blended. There are unusual tempo and volume changes. There is also a wide variety of styles, sometimes following each other. At other times, they form a well-filled potpourri. Add in the details, and you have a pleasant amount to listen to. Despite all this, it never gets too much. This is beautifully composed and played ditto. The same goes for ‘Alone at the Institution’, the final track. There is no encore on the CD; I would have liked to listen to this even longer.
The only downside: you can hear that a bit of applause has been cut out between some songs. This makes an occasional transition from one song to the next less beautiful. Other than that, only praise, because this CD is so beautiful! Almost a pity it doesn’t come with a DVD, so you could not only feel and hear their passion, but also see it. Anyone who has seen Blank Manuskript live knows that they play with so much passion. These Austrians convey emotion both in vocals and music to the listener.
They will go on tour in the autumn, with several gigs planned in the UK. And next year they will come to Germany, among other countries. If you are unable to attend a gig, or don’t want to wait that long, please buy this CD. Because ‘A Live Document’ is a must have for fans of complex well-constructed music.

Blank Manuskript is een Art Rock band uit Oostenrijk. Alle vijf de bandleden hebben een aandeel in de zang. De passie van deze multi-instrumentalisten is altijd te horen in hun live concerten, zo ook op ‘A Live Document’. Dit album is vorig jaar opgenomen tijdens Night of the Prog – Loreley
De tedere zang van ‘Foetus’ is soms vertellend, op andere momenten intenser. De samenzang vormt een goede blend. Dit ingetogen nummer loopt over naar ‘Public Enemy’. Na een kalme start is er een wending naar meer tempo en volume. De balans tussen de instrumenten is prima. De geluidskwalitiet is, zeker voor een openluchtconcert, goed. Hierdoor komen onder andere de zacht bespeelde cimbalen en het fluitspel goed tot hun recht. De muziek is complex van opzet, er zijn veel (plotselinge) wendingen, vaak met cross overs naar jazz. ‘The Cult of Birdman’ is een gave epic van ruim 16 minuten.
‘Twilight Peak’ heeft niet alleen jazz invloeden, er zit ook een AC/DC achtig stukje in. Zowel het orgel als het gitaarspel zijn meeslepend. Bepaalde delen zijn strak gezongen, al dan niet in (meerstemmige) samenzang. Er zijn talloze details in de muziek. Even lijkt dit nummer te eindigen, maar het is een verrassende verandering. Sommige stukken zijn behoorlijk snel gespeeld, andere zijn minimalistisch. Iedere noot is met precisie gespeeld, de opbouw naar een meeslepend stuk is fantastisch. Deze kwaliteit houdt Blank Manuskript ook vast in ‘After the War Part I’. In ‘After the War Part II’ word ik nogmaals geraakt door het gitaarspel. Na een heel zacht gezongen deel is er een mooie opbouw naar meer volume. Ook in het saxofoonspel is de emotie hoor-en voelbaar. Deze epic eindigt uiterst ingetogen.
Het is bijna onvoorstelbaar hoe perfect alles gespeeld wordt. De teksten zijn geen meezingers, dus is het publiek ook in ’The Last Journey’ niet te horen. ‘Silent Departure’ heeft een tedere, instrumentale start. De fluisterende woorden sluiten daar goed bij aan. Weer valt samenzang positief op. Dit nummer is breekbaar gezongen en gespeeld, het applaus is zeer terecht.
In de epic ‘Shared Isolation’ komt de jazz weer naar boven. Strak gespeeld delen worden met melodieuze/ rockende elementen afgewisseld, en/of vermengd. Er zijn bijzondere tempo-en volumewisselingen. Daarnaast is er een ruime variatie aan stijlen, soms volgen ze elkaar op. Op andere momenten vormen ze een goed gevulde potpourri. Tel daar de details bij op, en je hebt aangenaam veel om naar te luisteren. Ondanks dit alles wordt het nooit te veel. Dit is prachtig gecomponeerd en wordt dito gespeeld. Dat geldt ook voor ‘Alone at the Institution’, de afsluitende track. Een toegift is op de cd niet te horen, hier had ik nòg wel langer naar willen luisteren.
Het enige minpuntje: je hoort dat er een stukje applaus tussen sommige nummers is uitgeknipt. Hierdoor is een enkele overgang van het ene nummer naar het volgende minder mooi. Verder alleen maar lof, want deze cd is zo mooi! Bijna jammer dat er geen DVD bij zit, zodat je hun passie niet alleen voelt en hoort, maar ook zou kunnen zien. Wie Blank Manuskript live heeft gezien weet met hoeveel passie ze spelen. Deze Oostenrijkers brengen de emotie zowel in zang als muziek over naar de luisteraar.
In het najaar gaan ze op tour, waarbij er diverse optredens in Engeland gepland staan. En volgend jaar komen ze onder andere naar Duitsland. Als je niet naar een optreden kunt, of je wilt niet zo lang wachten, koop dan (alvast) deze cd. Want ‘A Live Document’ is een must have voor de liefhebber van complexe goed opgebouwde muziek.
