Multi-instrumentalist Darrel Treece-Birch is keyboardist of TEN and Nth Ascension. He also released a number of solo instrumental albums under his own name, including ‘Healing Touch’ (2017.) Now ‘Choices’ is out, the debut album by his Melodic prog rock band ‘Atlantea’. This concept album is about situations in life, such as hope and fear. And about decisions we make, or don’t make.

‘We Are The Voices’ has a tender start, the sound is beautifully clear. The first words are whispered. Then some sung phrases follow, these sound dreamy. The opening track is furthermore instrumental, tempo and volume are a bit higher. Slowly, it fades out. The louder start of ‘Questions’ is a fine contrast. The guitar playing is lovely. The vocals are a bit sweet at times, but there are also vocal outbursts that have a slight rough edge to them. The keys can be heard well, but do not dominate. This track ends with a slow fade out. This is in contrast to ‘The Watchers’. This pleasant track (with some nice guitar playing) has a pleasant sudden ending. There are different vocalists for the tracks. In ‘All I Need’, Kayleigh, Darrel’s daughter, sings. She has a surprising, slightly rough edge to her voice.

The balance between vocals and music, and the musical instruments among themselves, is good. At times, the (rocking) guitar playing comes more to the fore. At other places, the keys are more in the foreground. The bass can be heard nicely often. The drums provide a fine complement. The tempo in ‘One And The Same’ is rousing, the end is a bit dull due to the fade out. The acoustic guitar playing and piano sounds in ‘If We Could’ are a nice combination. The different voices (and wordless vocals) fit lovely with the whole thing. The ending is beautifully, tenderly played.

The instrumental ‘You Decide (Dumdedum)’ contains enjoyable changes with both
catchy/rocking and compelling pieces. ‘Secret Place’, too, is somewhat sweet in tone. The combination/change of bass tones with the sound of “string instruments” and piano is fine. ‘Time For Choice’ starts with piano sounds. The gentle rhythm, and soft vocals are balanced with the melody. In the background, there are light classical elements. During the instrumental piece, the guitar playing emerges nicely, the classical elements remain in the background. Once again, vocals and music merge into a sweeter everything. The build-up to the end is nice, but again it is cut short just a little too early.

It is not at all bad that there are different vocalists, but the concept does not come across as well. The melody is generally friendly in nature. That suits the manner of singing. Fear is not/barely felt in vocals or music, hope is. A few songs are a bit sweeter in nature. Yet there are definitely rocking elements too. The songs clearly belong together and form a good whole. In many tracks, the bass is pleasantly evident. At times, there are quite a lot of layers in the music, not all of which you hear when you first listen.

Atlantea – Choices

Multi-instrumentalist Darrel Treece-Birch is toetsenist van TEN en Nth Ascension. Hij bracht onder zijn eigen naam ook een aantal instrumentale solo albums uit, waaronder ‘Healing Touch’ (2017.) Nu is ‘Choices’ uit, het debuutalbum van zijn Melodic prog rock band ‘Atlantea’. Dit conceptalbum gaat over situaties in het leven, zoals hoop en angst. En over beslissingen die we wel, of juist niet nemen.

‘We Are The Voices’ heeft een tedere start, het geluid is mooi helder. De eerste woorden worden gefluisterd. Dan volgen enkele gezongen zinnen, deze klinken dromerig. De openingstrack is verder instrumentaal, tempo en volume liggen wat hoger. Het geheel dooft langzaam uit. De luidere start van ‘Questions’ vormt een prima contrast. Het gitaarspel is mooi. De zang is met vlagen een beetje zoet, maar er zijn ook vocale uithalen te horen waar een licht ruw randje op ligt. De toetsen zijn goed te horen, maar overheersen niet. Deze track eindigt met een langzame fade out. Dit in tegenstelling tot ‘The Watchers’. Deze aangename track (met lekker veel gitaarspel) heeft een leuk plotseling einde. Er zijn verschillende vocalisten voor de tracks. In ‘All I Need’ zingt Kayleigh, de dochter van Darrel. Zij heeft een verrassend, licht ruw randje op haar stem.

De balans tussen zang en muziek, en de muziekinstrumenten onderling is goed. Soms komt het (rockende) gitaarspel meer naar voren. Op andere plaatsen zijn de toetsen meer op de voorgrond. De bas is lekker vaak goed te horen. De drums zorgen voor een prima aanvulling. Het tempo in ‘One And The Same’ is opzwepend, het einde is door de fade out een beetje saai. Het akoestisch gitaarspel en de pianoklanken in ‘If We Could’ vormen een mooie combinatie. De verschillende stemmen (en de woordeloze zang) passen prima bij het geheel. Het einde is mooi klein gespeeld.

Het instrumentale ‘You Decide (Dumdedum)’ bevat leuke veranderingen met zowel
pakkende/rockende als meeslepende stukken. Ook ‘Secret Place’ is wat zoet van opzet. De combinatie/afwisseling van bastonen met het geluid van “strijkinstrumenten” en piano is prima. ‘Time For Choice’ start met pianoklanken. Het rustige ritme, en de zachte zang zijn in balans met de melodie. Op de achtergrond zijn er licht klassieke elementen. Tijdens het instrumentale stuk komt het gitaarspel mooi naar voren, de klassieke elementen blijven op de achtergrond. Zang en muziek smelten nogmaals samen tot een wat zoeter geheel. De opbouw naar het einde is mooi, maar ook hier is het net iets te vroeg afgekapt.

Het is totaal niet erg dat er verschillende vocalisten zijn, maar het concept komt minder goed naar voren. De melodie is over het algemeen vriendelijk van aard. Dat past bij de manier van zingen. Angst is in zang of muziek niet/ nauwelijks voelbaar, hoop wel. Een aantal nummers zijn wat zoeter van opzet. Toch zijn er zeker ook rockende elementen. De nummers horen duidelijk bij elkaar en vormen een goed geheel. De bas is in veel tracks aangenaam duidelijk aanwezig. Met vlagen zijn er best veel laagjes in de muziek, die je niet allemaal hoort als je voor het eerst luistert.
