‘A day at the beach’ is het vijfde album van de prog rockband Airbag. Maar dit is het eerste album als trio van deze Noorse mannen. Hun inspiratie komt door de new wave, de filmmuziek en terugkeer van de jaren ’80 elektronica. Ze hebben hun kenmerkende gitaarspel gecombineerd met soundscapes.
De teksten gaan over een man die zijn familie achterliet in een onbekende toekomst. Er doen een aantal gastmuzikanten mee, waaronder bassist Kristian Hultgren (Wobbler).

‘Machines And Men’ heeft een hele zachte start. Heel langzaam wordt het geluid wat sterker, maar de muziek blijft ingetogen. Net als anders, sluit de zang perfect aan bij de muziek. Delen van de tekst worden herhaald. Beetje bij beetje wordt de muziek iets zwaarder, en krijgt een rockender karakter. Niet alleen het volume, maar ook het ritme wordt opgeschroefd. Er is aangenaam veel bas aanwezig. Het geluid is iets groezelig, maar dat geeft de tekst meer impact. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met prachtige instrumentale stukken. Hierin krijgt het fantastische gitaarspel van Bjørn Riis alle ruimte. Dit openingsnummer eindigt rustig.

Het intro van ‘Into The Unknown’ heeft elementen uit de jaren ’80. De spanning wordt wordt opgebouwd.. gaan we de elektronische kant van toetsen horen? Of komt er een onverwachte twist naar de rock? Voorlopig wint de elektronische kant, maar dan wel rustig. Weer word ik geraakt door de zang, zowel door de stem als de tekst. Sommige details klinken ‘ver weg’ in de koptelefoon, ze vormen wel degelijk een mooie toevoeging. Zo nu en dan zit er een lichte echo op de drums.
De ene keer zijn er heel wat laagjes in de muziek. Maar ook als er weinig laagjes zijn, is er van alles om intens naar te luisteren. ‘Airbag’ houdt me helemaal gekluisterd aan hun muziek, het meespelende gitaarwerk is fantastisch. Deze epic eindigt met een hele langzame fade out.

De drums zorgen voor een bijzonder intro van ‘Sunsets’. Als er meer instrumenten bij komen, gaan tempo en volume meteen omhoog. De tekst gaat over de negatieve kant van het leven in deze maatschappij.
Meeslepend en/of rockend gitaarspel wordt afgewisseld met meer elektronische klanken. Er zitten grote volume contrasten tussen de rockende delen en de klein gespeelde stukken, maar de balans blijft. De wending van rock naar een minimalistisch stuk verloopt super, dan dooft het nummer prachtig uit.

De track ‘A Day At The Beach (Part 2)’, is net als het eerste deel een mooie instrumentale track. Beide instrumentale (titel) tracks zijn boeiend, maar vrij kort in vergelijking met de overige tracks.

Na een rustige start wordt ‘Megalomaniac’ langzaam opgebouwd naar rock. Sommige veranderingen vloeien in elkaar over. Op andere momenten zijn de wendingen snel en onverwacht. Ook in deze slottrack varieert de muziek van uiterst rustig tot lekkere rock, natuurlijk met fantastisch gitaarspel.
De iets meer ‘heavy’ stukken zijn meestal instrumentaal. Dit laatste nummer wordt langzaam weggedraaid.
Door de albumtitel ‘A day at the beach’ zou je misschien de geluiden van wind of de zee verwachten. ‘Airbag’ heeft die ‘standaard’ dingen niet nodig om je toch te kunnen boeien.

Airbag – A day at the beach

A day at the beach‘ is the fifth album of prog rock band Airbag. But this is the first album as a trio of these Norwegian men. Their inspiration comes from the new wave, the film music and the return of the 80’s electronics. They have combined their characteristic guitar playing with soundscapes.
The lyrics are about a man who left his family behind in an unknown future. A number of guest musicians participate, including bass player Kristian Hultgren (Wobbler).

‘Machines And Men‘ has a very gentle start. Very slowly the sound gets more powerful, but the music remains subdued. Just like usual, the vocals perfectly match the music. Parts of the text are repeated. Little by little the music gets heavier, and gets a rocking touch. Not only the volume, but also the rhythm is increased. There is a pleasant amount of bass present. The sound is a bit dingy, but that gives the lyrics more impact. Vocal parts are alternated with beautiful instrumental pieces. Bjørn Riis’ fantastic guitar playing gets all the freedom it needs. This opening track ends quietly.

The intro of ‘Into The Unknown‘ has elements from the 80s. The tension is built up… Are we going to hear the electronic aspects of keys? Or will there be an unexpected twist to the rock? For now, the electronic side wins, but still calm. Again, I’m touched by the vocals, both the voice and the lyrics. Some details sound ‘far away’ in the headphones, they do make a nice addition. Every now and then there is a slight echo on the drums.
Sometimes there are a lot of layers in the music. But even when there are few layers, there is plenty to listen to intensely. ‘Airbag‘ keeps me completely hooked on their music, the compelling guitar work is fantastic. This epic ends with a very slow fade out.

The drums provide a special intro of ‘Sunsets‘. When more instruments are added, tempo and volume immediately go up. The lyrics are about the negative side of life in this society.
Compelling and/or rocking guitar playing is alternated with more electronic sounds. There are large volume contrasts between the rocking parts and the small played pieces, but the balance remains. The turn from rock to a minimalistic piece is superb, then the song extinguishes beautifully.

The track ‘A Day At The Beach (Part 2)‘, is, just like the first part, a beautiful instrumental track. Both instrumental (title) tracks are captivating, but rather short compared to the other tracks.

After a quiet start ‘Megalomaniac‘ is slowly built up to rock. Some changes flow into each other. On other moments the twists and turns are fast and unexpected. Also, in this final track the music varies from very quiet to nice rock, of course with fantastic guitar playing.
The slightly more ‘heavy’ pieces are mostly instrumental. This last song is slowly turned away.
With the album title ‘A day at the beach‘ you might expect the sounds of wind or sea. ‘Airbag‘ does not need those ‘standard’ things to captivate you anyway.
