At the end of 2019 the decision was made that Vandenberg’s Moonkings would go on hold indefinitely. Frontman Jan Hoving is far from being done with making music. That’s why he asked Carlo Gentenaar, guitarist of their former band ‘Stonefly,’ if he wanted to collaborate on a solo record of Jan. Carlo was more than happy to do so. Jan also asked his Moonking mates’ bassist Sem Christoffel and drummer Mart Nijen Es. The band name The MoRR (The Ministry of Rock & Roll) was an idea of Carlo. The MoRR is not a hard rock band like Vandenberg’s Moonkings. The music of The MoRR is calmer and much more blues related. Now’s As Good A Time As Any’ is the debut album, and will be released on September 17.

‘Marbles’ has a pleasant instrumental intro. The stacked, wordless vocals create a feel-good atmosphere. When Jan starts singing, you recognize his voice, which he doses very well, making his vocals fit the music. The catchy rhythm and the lovely melody make this opening number stick in your head and make you want to sing along. The high-pitched background vocals come back a few times. Because of the sound, you might think there are also women singing along. But that is not the case, Jan does the high backing vocals. The organ is regularly present (in the background). The blues is good to hear in ‘Ain’t Feelin’ It’. Mart and Sem did not use their power they had with the Moonkings. So, the rhythm section fits the whole. Just like Carlo’s guitar playing, this is also well dosed. The end is nice and sudden. The saxophone comes into its own in the beautiful ballad ‘Heartstrings’. The acoustic guitar play forms a unity with the vocals of Jan, which sometimes have a slightly rough edge.

The subdued played start of ‘Scars’ touches me immediately, the sound is pretty bright. First there is only guitar and the fragile sung words of Jan, you can hear the pain in his voice. When Mart starts drumming, he does it quietly, matching the sensitive vocals. The subtle details on guitar give it just that little bit extra it needs. The bit more power in vocals and music towards the end, serves the whole. The end is nicely unexpected. The bass is pleasantly present in ‘Turn Every Stone’, again there is some nice playing with the distribution over the headphones. The backing vocals are sometimes a bit predictable, but the short echo on the vocals is surprising. ‘Kick Like A Mule’ has a lovely mid-tempo. Jan always knows how to convince us with his voice. When there are live shows, this is one of the “sing-alongs”. At the end Jan has a nice rough edge to his voice.

The music in ‘It’s All Over’ sounds more cheerful than the words Jan sings. The piece sung polyphonically about in the middle is beautifully done. During an instrumental piece with more power, rest is nicely chosen. Just before the end, he sings some words with more power, almost solo. I would have liked to hear that more often! Jan has a beautiful and varied voice, he doses his volume well with the songs. He could have sung a bit more (almost) solo, as a cherry on the cake. The lyrics of these blues related songs are uncomplicated and therefore easy to sing along with, yet they are not too cliché. ‘Now’s As Good A Time As Any’ contains 12 good “easy-listening” blues songs. It’s great to sing along with at home, but hopefully we can see The MoRR live soon!

The MoRR – Now’s As Good A Time As Any

Eind 2019 werd besloten dat Vandenberg’s Moonkings voor onbepaalde tijd zou stoppen. Frontman Jan Hoving is nog lang niet klaar met muziek maken. Daarom vroeg hij aan Carlo Gentenaar, gitarist van hun voormalige band ‘Stonefly,’ of hij mee wilde werken aan een solo plaat van Jan. Dat wilde Carlo maar al te graag. Jan stelde die vraag ook aan zijn Moonking-maatjes bassist Sem Christoffel en drummer Mart Nijen Es. De bandnaam The MoRR (The Ministry of Rock & Roll) was een idee van Carlo. The MoRR is geen hard rock band zoals Vandenberg’s Moonkings. De muziek van The MoRR is rustiger en veel meer blues gerelateerd. ‘Now’s As Good A Time As Any’ is het debuutalbum, en verschijnt 17 september.

‘Marbles’ heeft een aangenaam instrumentaal intro. De gestapelde, woordeloze zang zorgt voor een feel good sfeer. Als Jan begint te zingen herken je zijn stem, die hij prima doseert, waardoor zijn zang aansluit bij de muziek. Door het pakkende ritme en de heerlijke melodie blijft dit openingsnummer al snel in je hoofd kleven, bovendien nodigt het uit tot meezingen. De hoge achtergrond zang komt een paar keer terug. Qua sound zou je kunnen denken dat er ook vrouwen meezingen. Maar dat is niet het geval, Jan doet de hoge backing vocals. Het orgel is regelmatig (op de achtergrond) aanwezig.

De blues is goed te horen in ‘Ain’t Feelin’ It’. Mart en Sem hebben hun power die ze bij de Moonkings hadden hier niet gebruikt. De ritmesectie past dus bij het geheel. Net als het gitaarspel van Carlo, dit ook is prima gedoseerd. Het eind is mooi plotseling. De saxofoon komt goed tot zijn recht de mooie ballad ‘Heartstrings’. Het akoestische gitaarspel vormt een eenheid met de zang van Jan, waar af en toe een licht ruw randje op ligt.

De klein gespeelde start van ‘Scars’ raakt mij meteen, het geluid is mooi helder. Eerst is er alleen gitaar en de breekbaar gezongen woorden van Jan, je hoort de pijn in zijn stem.
Als Mart begint te drummen, doet hij dit rustig, passend bij de gevoelige zang. De subtiele details op gitaar geven net dat beetje extra wat het nodig heeft. Het beetje meer power in zang en muziek naar het einde toe, staat in dienst van het geheel. Het einde is mooi onverwacht.

De bas is aangenaam aanwezig in ‘Turn Every Stone’, weer is er leuk gespeeld met de verdeling over de koptelefoon. De backing vocals zijn soms iets voorspelbaar, maar de korte echo op de zang is wel verrassend. ‘Kick Like A Mule’ heeft een heerlijk mid-tempo. Jan weet met zijn zang de woorden steeds overtuigend te brengen. Als er live shows komen, is dit een van de “meezingers”. Op het laatst heeft Jan een lekker ruw randje op zijn stem.

De muziek in ‘It’s All Over’ klinkt vrolijker dan de woorden die Jan zingt. Het meerstemmig gezongen stukje ongeveer in het midden is mooi gedaan. Tijdens een instrumentaal stukje met meer power, is de rust leuk gekozen. Vlak voor het eind zingt hij enkele woorden met meer power, bijna solo. Dat had ik best vaker willen horen! Jan heeft een mooie en gevarieerde stem, hij doseert zijn volume goed bij de nummers. Hij had best wat meer (bijna) solo mogen zingen, als kers op de taart. De teksten van deze blues gerelateerde songs zijn ongecompliceerd en daardoor vrij makkelijk mee zingen, toch zijn ze niet al te cliché matig. ‘Now’s As Good A Time As Any’ telt 12 goede “easy-listening” blues nummers. Het is heerlijk om thuis mee te zingen, maar hopelijk kunnen The MoRR snel live gaan zien!
