Rob Orlemans & Half Past Midnight is a blues rock power trio from the Netherlands. This enthusiastic band regularly performs at blues festivals. Their latest album is called ‘Shake Them Down’. This album features 12 studio tracks, including a cover of Alvin Lee. In addition, there are two live bonus tracks.

‘Boogie On Down The Line’ has a catchy intro. The slightly rough edge on Rob’s voice matches the music. This opening track has several nice twists and turns and, of course, plenty of delicious guitar playing. The rhythm section completes it all, consisting of bassist Ernst van Ee, and drummer Piet Tromp. The intro of ‘Into The Night’ is different , but the lovely vibe of the music remains. The sound is slightly on the dull side, though. This is not a problem, as it’s okay with this old-school blues rock. Rob rips through it nicely with his guitar. I turn up the volume once more. It is almost impossible to sit still, especially on the catchy ‘Never Be Ready’.

‘Honkin’ To The Blues’ is rousing, again the balance between guitar playing and rhythm section is good. There are plenty of twists and/or variations in the music. Just before the end, there is another surprising twist. So the songs are well constructed. The lyrics are sometimes a bit clichéd, but that does make it easier to sing along. You feel that these songs will create a good atmosphere live. Because you automatically move with the flow of the music. Vocal parts are nicely interspersed with pleasant instrumental parts, where Rob’s guitar playing comes into its own nicely. ‘Give That Thang To Me’ is a pounding blues rock song with nice twists. The build-up to the end almost feels like being at a live concert.

You immediately hear and feel the passion with which ‘Song For Erik’ is played. For a moment, the music seems to go against each other, but the balance of this particular, instrumental song remains. The organ playing in ‘Nadine’ melds beautifully with vocals and music. Some of the percussion is fast and soft. This is one of the songs that is sure to create interaction with the audience. At home, you almost automatically sing along. The rhythm section has a nice part throughout. But in ‘Love Like A Man’, their input comes out really well. This is a fine cover with cool guitar playing. The way they sing matches the tight rhythm of ‘Moonlight Rumble’. This too invites you to sing along.

‘Desire’ has a nice melange of guitar sounds. The lyrics of this short song are half spoken, half sung. Two live bonus tracks follow. The sound is a little too dull, but you can feel the good atmosphere of their live playing. Anyone who has seen Rob live before is familiar with the passion with which he plays. The accessible songs are rousing and soon stick in your head. This is delightful, well-constructed music that keeps you listening.

Rob Orlemans & Half Past Midnight is een bluesrock power trio uit Nederland. Deze enthousiaste band staat regelmatig op bluesfestivals. Hun nieuwste album heet ‘Shake Them Down’. Hierop staan 12 studionummers, waaronder een cover van Alvin Lee. Bovendien zijn er twee live bonustracks.

‘Boogie On Down The Line’ heeft een pakkend intro. Het licht ruwe randje op Robs stem sluit aan bij de muziek. Deze openingstrack heeft diverse leuke wendingen en natuurlijk volop heerlijk gitaarspel. De ritmesectie maakt het geheel compleet, deze bestaat uit bassist Ernst van Ee, en drummer Piet Tromp. Het intro van ‘Into The Night’ is weer anders, maar de heerlijke vibe van de muziek blijft bestaan. Het geluid is wel iets aan de doffe kant. Storend is dit niet, want het mag wel bij deze old school bluesrock. Rob scheurt er lekker doorheen met zijn gitaar. Ik schroef het volume nogmaals op. Stilzitten is bijna onmogelijk, vooral bij het pakkende ‘Never Be Ready’.

‘Honkin’ To The Blues’ is opzwepend, ook hier is de balans tussen gitaarspel en ritmesectie goed. Er zijn ruim voldoende wendingen en/of variaties in de muziek. Vlak voor het einde is er nog een verrassende wending. De nummers zijn dus goed opgebouwd. De teksten zijn soms wat cliché matig, maar dat zorgt er wel voor dat je makkelijker mee zingt. Je voelt dat deze nummers live voor een goede sfeer zullen zorgen. Want je beweegt vanzelf mee met de flow van de muziek. Vocale delen worden prima afgewisseld met aangename instrumentale delen, waar het gitaarspel van Rob mooi tot zijn recht komt. ‘Give That Thang To Me’ is een stampend blues rock nummer met leuke wendingen. De opbouw naar het einde voelt bijna alsof je bij een live concert bent.

Je hoort en voelt meteen de passie waarmee ‘Song For Erik’ gespeeld is. Even lijkt de muziek tegen elkaar in te gaan, maar het evenwicht van dit bijzondere, instrumentale nummer blijft bestaan. Het orgelspel in ‘Nadine’ smelt mooi samen met zang en muziek. Een deel van de percussie is snel en zacht. Dit is één van de nummers dat zeker voor interactie met het publiek zal zorgen. Thuis zing je bijna vanzelf mee. De ritme sectie heeft overal een mooi aandeel. Maar in ‘Love Like A Man’ komt hun inbreng helemaal goed naar voren. Dit is een prima cover met gaaf gitaarspel. De manier van zingen past bij het strakke ritme van ‘Moonlight Rumble’. Ook dit nodigt uit om mee te zingen.

‘Desire’ heeft een mooie melange van gitaarklanken. De tekst van dit korte nummer wordt half gesproken, half gezongen. Er volgen twee live bonustracks. Het geluid is iets te dof, maar je voelt de goede sfeer van hun live spel. Wie Rob al eens live heeft gezien, is bekend met de passie waarmee hij speelt.
De toegankelijke nummers zijn opzwepend en blijven al snel in je hoofd kleven. Dit is heerlijke, goed opgebouwde muziek waar je naar blijft luisteren.
