The super rock group ‘The Dead Daisies’ released their self-titled album in 2013. Since then they have grown considerably. The lineup changed from time to time (even now there is a different lineup) what remained is the unfading rock.

‘Face Your Fear’ has a surprising start, the rousing rock soon coming in. Bassist Glenn Hughes is still the vocalist. Guitarists Doug Aldrich and David Lowy are also still there. Brian Tichy is the new drummer. He too is a well-known figure in the rock circuit. The opening track fades out nicely. At the start of ‘Hypnotize Yourself’, there is enjoyable use of headphone distribution. The tempo and volume changes are good, the pace surprisingly calm at times. Even in the strongly played parts, the sound of the cymbals is beautiful. The distribution of the instruments among themselves is good. 

‘Radiance’ is about Daisy, she is an heiress of the underworld. During a time travel she walks through the silent streets, meanwhile she is fully focused on her cell phone. The holographic performance of “The Meta Daisies” catches her attention. When she turns around, she is captivated by a bright light shining in the distance. She travels through time to find the origin of the mysterious glow. This leads her to a dark forest with a castle. Here she discovers a secret tunnel with an underground arch. She opens a small music box, this contains a glowing ball that emits energy, this takes her to the underworld. At the court, Daisy sees “The Meta Daisies” rock, her passion for rock causes her to dance, this puts her in a euphoric state. As she touches an angel, an epic explosion is caused. She is thrust back to the city and joins the energy sphere, with this she ascends to the next meta dimension. This is a rightful  album title.

The songs will do well played live, you can hear that in ‘Born to Fly’, among others. You can feel the moments where there will be interaction with the audience. Again, there is a nice minor played part in this as well. This rousing song ends rather abruptly.  ‘Kiss The Sun’ has pleasant energy, the bass has a nice presence and the guitar playing is wonderful. ‘Courageous’ has a few volume changes, Brian goes along with this just fine. Sometimes he lets his drumsticks rest for a while. 

After some great rock songs, ‘Roll On’ follows with its subdued start. You can hear the emotion on the vocals. Tempo and volume increase a bit, but it remains a bit more laid back for a while. This is where the details in percussion stand out. There are also some light orchestral elements added, is fine interspersed with rocking guitar playing. The minuscule piano sounds at the end drop out too much. With that, this beautiful, sensitive song does end a bit disappointing. Especially since this is also the last of the CD. 

The songs are not only written to be played live, also on CD you notice that they are constructed with care. They have a good intro and outro, as well as nice details. 

For example, details in “Cascade,” these are hardly noticeable at first (even with headphones). In short: The Dead Daisies continue to surprise.

The Dead Daisies – Radiance

De super rock groep ‘The Dead Daisies’ bracht in 2013 hun titelloze album uit. Sindsdien zijn ze behoorlijk gegroeid. De bezetting wisselde af en toe (ook nu is er een andere line-up) wat bleef is de onvervalste rock.

‘Face Your Fear’ heeft een verrassende start, de opzwepende rock komt er al snel bij. Bassist Glenn Hughes is nog steeds de zanger. De gitaristen Doug Aldrich en David Lowy zijn er ook nog bij. Brian Tichy is de nieuwe drummer. Ook hij is een bekende in het rock circuit. De openingstrack dooft mooi uit. Aan de start van ‘Hypnotize Yourself’ is er leuk gebruik gemaakt van de verdeling over de koptelefoon. De tempo- en volume wisselingen zijn goed, het tempo is soms verrassend kalm. Ook in de sterk gespeelde delen is het klank van de cimbalen mooi. De verdeling van de instrumenten onderling is goed. 

 ‘Radiance’ gaat over Daisy, zij is een erfgename van de onderwereld. Tijdens een tijdreis loopt ze door de stille straten, ondertussen heeft ze haar aandacht volledig bij haar mobieltje. Het holografische optreden van “The Meta Daisies” trekt haar aandacht. Als ze omdraait wordt ze gebiologeerd door een fel licht dat in de verte straalt. Ze reist door de tijd om de oorsprong te vinden van de mysterieuze gloed. Dit leidt haar naar een donker bos met een kasteel. Hier ontdekt ze een geheime tunnel met een ondergronds gewelf. Ze opent een  klein muziekdoosje, deze bevat een gloeiende bol die energie uitstraalt, dit brengt haar naar de onderwereld. Aan het hof ziet Daisy “The Meta Daisies” rocken, door haar passie voor rock gaat ze dansen, hierdoor komt ze in een euforische toestand. Als ze een engel aanraakt, veroorzaakt dit een epische explosie. Ze wordt terug gestuwd naar de stad en sluit zich aan bij de energiebol, hiermee stijgt ze op naar de volgende meta dimensie. Dit is een terechte album titel.

De nummers zullen het live gespeeld goed doen, dat hoor je onder andere aan ‘Born to Fly’. Je voelt de momenten waarop er interactie met het publiek zal zijn. Ook hier zit er een leuk kleiner gespeeld deel in. Dit opzwepende nummer eindigt nogal plotseling.  ‘Kiss The Sun’ heeft aangenaam veel energie, de bas is lekker aanwezig en het gitaarspel is heerlijk. ‘Courageous’ heeft een paar volumewisselingen, Brian gaat hier prima in mee. Soms laat hij zijn drumstokken even met rust. 

Na een aantal heerlijke rocknummers volgt ‘Roll On’ met zijn ingetogen start. Je hoort de emotie op de zang. Tempo en volume nemen wat toe, maar het blijft even wat meer laid back. Hier vallen de details in percussie goed op. Er zijn ook enkele lichte orkestrale elementen toegevoegd, wordt prima afgewisseld met rockend gitaarspel. De minieme pianoklanken op het laatst vallen te veel weg. Daarmee eindigt dit mooie, gevoelige nummer toch een beetje teleurstellend. Zeker omdat dit ook het laatste van de cd is. 

De nummers zijn niet alleen geschreven om live te spelen, ook op cd merk je dat ze met zorg zijn opgebouwd. Ze hebben een goed intro en outro, en bovendien leuke details. 

Bijvoorbeeld door details in ‘Cascade’, deze vallen in eerste instantie (zelfs met koptelefoon) nauwelijks op. Kortom: The Dead Daisies blijven verrassen.
