‘Foxtrot’ is perhaps Genesis’ most beloved album. In honour of the fiftieth anniversary of this album, guitar virtuoso Steve Hackett planned a tour. He was joined by Rob Townsend, Nad Sylvan and Amanda Lehmann, among others. On ‘Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton’ you will not only hear tracks from the album ‘Foxtrot’. But also solo work by Steve, including ‘The Devil’s Cathedral’ (from his latest studio album Surrender of Silence).
This concert consists largely of older songs, which is immediately evident by the opening track ‘Ace of Wands’. As we are used to from Steve, the sound quality is good. That old and new fit well together proves ‘The Devil’s Cathedral’, in which the sounds of a church organ cannot be missed, of course. This newer track is delightfully complex.
‘Spectral Mornings’ is compelling, time and again Steve manages to strike a nerve. This is followed by ‘Every Day’, which is rightly rewarded with applause. The classical elements and details in ‘A Tower Struck Down’ sound wonderful. The contrast between rock and classical elements/minimalist parts is great. This is impressive but if you listen with earphones, it might take a while to find the perfect volume. ‘Camino Royale’ also has lovely rocking guitar playing, this forms a nice balance with the organ playing, among other things. Again, the alternation with the quieter parts is perfect. The extended saxophone playing is ear candy. The live experience between songs can certainly be heard, but not excessively so. Which allows one to enjoy the music and vocals extra. Steve has a fantastic team of musicians around him. That goes not only for bass, guitar, drums and keys. But also the saxophone and flutes, played by Rob Townsend. You can hear ‘Shadow of the Hierophant’ ten times in a row without it getting boring. Amanda Lehmann’s voice and her guitar playing come together beautifully.
Of course, the album ‘Foxtrot’ was played. The intro of ‘Watcher of the Skies’ causes goosebumps. If Nad Sylvan’s vocals match somewhere very beautifully, it is here. The complex turns in the music are difficult to play, but it flows flawlessly. The build-up to the end is grandiose. By no means every prog rock fan witnessed the release of this album ( knowingly). Many of them did not get to know Genesis until the 1980s. But even the majority of “younger” fans know most of the songs, as they are regularly played live. But this whole album live, that is unique. Enjoyable moments thread themselves together. Both of the beautifully subdued ‘Horizons’, as well as crowd favourites/epics ‘Supper’s Ready’ and ‘Firth of Fifth’. Together, they last no less than 40 delicious minutes. To finish off ‘Los Endos’, enjoy all the complex twists, details and unusual use and/or combinations of instruments.
There are as many as ten superlatives for this music, this is truly a wonderful album. Even if you already have the album ‘Foxtrot’, or many other live albums, even then you will definitely enjoy it. ‘Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton’ is one of the finest albums of the year. This double album (with BlueRay or DVD) is a true must have.

‘Foxtrot’ is misschien wel het meest geliefde album van Genesis. Ter ere van de vijftigste verjaardag van dit album plande gitaar virtuoos Steve Hackett een tour. Hij werd bijgestaan door onder andere Rob Townsend, Nad Sylvan en Amanda Lehmann. Op ‘Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton’ hoor je niet alleen de tracks van het album ‘Foxtrot’. Maar ook solo werk van Steve, waaronder ‘The Devil’s Cathedral’ (van zijn laatste studioalbum Surrender of Silence).
Dit concert bestaat grotendeels uit oudere nummers, dat wordt meteen duidelijk door de openingstrack ‘Ace of Wands’. Zoals we van Steve gewend zijn, is ook nu de geluidskwaliteit goed. Dat oud en nieuw goed op elkaar aansluiten bewijst ‘The Devil’s Cathedral’, waarin de klanken van een kerkorgel natuurlijk niet mogen ontbreken. Dit nieuwere nummer is heerlijk complex.
‘Spectral Mornings’ is meeslepend, keer op keer weet Steve een gevoelige snaar te raken. Hierna volgt ‘Every Day’, wat terecht met applaus beloond wordt. De klassieke elementen en de details in ‘A Tower Struck Down’ klinken prachtig. Het contrast tussen rock en klassieke elementen/minimalistische delen is groot. Dit is indrukwekkend maar als je met koptelefoon luistert, is het misschien even zoeken naar het perfecte volume. Ook ‘Camino Royale’ heeft heerlijk rockend gitaarspel, dit vormt een mooie balans met onder andere het orgelspel. Weer is de afwisseling met de rustigere delen perfect. Het uitgebreide saxofoonspel is ear candy. De live beleving tussen de nummers is zeker te horen, maar niet overdadig. Waardoor men extra kan genieten van muziek en zang. Steve heeft een fantastisch team muzikanten om zich heen. Dat geldt niet alleen voor bas, gitaar, drum en toetsen. Maar ook voor de saxofoon en fluiten, bespeeld door Rob Townsend. ‘Shadow of the Hierophant’ kun je wel tien keer achter elkaar horen, zonder dat het gaat vervelen. De stem van Amanda Lehmann en haar gitaarspel komen mooi tot zijn recht.
Natuurlijk werd het album ‘Foxtrot’ gespeeld. Het intro van ‘Watcher of the Skies’ zorgt voor kippenvel. Als de zang van Nad Sylvan ergens heel mooi bij kleurt, dan is het hier wel. De complexe wendingen in de muziek zijn moeilijk te spelen, maar het verloopt foutloos. De opbouw naar het einde is grandioos. Lang niet iedere prog rock liefhebber heeft de release van dit album (bewust) mee gemaakt. Een groot deel heeft pas in de jaren ’80 met Genesis kennis gemaakt. Maar ook het merendeel van de “jongere” fans kennen de meeste nummers, want ze worden regelmatig live gespeeld. Maar dit hele album live, dat is uniek. Geniet momenten rijgen zich aan een. Zowel van het prachtige ingetogen ‘Horizons’, als van publiekslievelingen/epics ‘Supper’s Ready’ en ‘Firth of Fifth’. Bij elkaar duren ze maar liefst ruim 40 heerlijke minuten. Tot besluit ‘Los Endos’, nog even genieten van alle complexe wendingen, details en het bijzondere gebruik en/of combinaties van instrumenten.
Er zijn wel tien superlatieven voor deze muziek, dit is werkelijk een prachtig album. Zelfs al heb je het album ‘Foxtrot’ al, of veel andere live albums, ook dan zul je zeker genieten. ’Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton is één van de mooiste albums van het jaar. Dit dubbelalbum (met BlueRay of DVD) is een ware must have.
