Sloper is een nieuwe internationale rockband uit Nederland, België en Engeland. Dit kwartet bestaat uit twee drummers Cesar Zuiderwijk (Golden Earring) en Mario Goossens (Triggerfinger). Daarnaast heeft de band twee gitaristen: de Belg Fabio Canini. En de Brit Peter Shoulder (o.a. The Union), hij is tevens zanger van Sloper. Zoals je ziet: er is geen bassist. Deze mannen zijn grote bekenden in de muziekwereld. Peter en Mario hebben samen in de metalband ‘Winterville’ gespeeld. Fabio Canini is misschien wat minder bekend bij het grote publiek. Maar als sessiemuzikant heeft hij met talloze bands op de planken gestaan. Op 5 juni bracht ‘Sloper’ hun debuut EP uit, met vier heavy classic rock tracks.

Twee fantastische drummers en twee dito gitaristen, dat belooft veel goeds. Afgelopen jaar was ik bij één van hun try out shows. Ze speelden het dak er af, die fantastische energie verwacht ik op deze EP terug te horen.

Na de ongedwongen start van ‘Mind Melter’ valt het groezelige geluid op. Dit is vast de bedoeling, maar of iedereen dit zal waarderen? De zang klinkt vervormd, hierdoor zijn de woorden van Peter vrij lastig te verstaan. Het gave gitaarspel, en het drumwerk van de mannen komen niet volledig tot zijn recht. Toch kom je vanzelf in de flow van dit heerlijke rocknummer, dat overigens eenvoudig van structuur is.

‘I’m alive’ heeft een leuke start op gitaar. De zang is beter te verstaan, maar de vintage sound blijft. De power rockstem van Peter komt hierdoor minder goed tot uiting. Hoewel ook dit nummer eenvoudig opgebouwd is, tap ik als vanzelf mee met mijn voet. Datzelfde gebeurt bij ‘I Wanna Know’. Het luistert lekker weg, maar echt onder de indruk ben ik niet. Na een opzwepend instrumentaal stuk eindigt dit nummer vrij onverwacht. Live gespeeld zal dit instrumentale stuk zeker uitgebreid worden.

Bij ‘Shot Down’ merk je misschien nog wel het best dat het live gespeeld een opzwepende werking zal hebben. Hier op de EP gebeurt dat ook al, ik zet het volume wat harder. Als het geluid minder vintage was, had ik het volume zeker nóg verder opengedraaid.

Eerlijk gezegd had ik meer vuurwerk verwacht op deze EP, want dat hebben de mannen in zich. Dat komt hier niet helemaal tot uiting. Voor liefhebbers van vintage geluid en heerlijke ongecompliceerde rock zal ‘Sloper’ zeker in de smaak vallen. En live gespeeld komt alles goed. Bovendien komt er later dit jaar een full cd uit. Daar kijk ik reikhalzend naar uit, want dit viertal heeft een geweldige spirit.

Sloper – Sloper

Sloper is a new international rock band from the Netherlands, Belgium and England. This quartet consists of two drummers Cesar Zuiderwijk (Golden Earring) and Mario Goossens (Triggerfinger). In addition, the band has two guitarists, the Belgian Fabio Canini. And the Brit Peter Shoulder (The Union), he is also the singer of Sloper. As you can see: there is no bass player. These men are great acquaintances in the music world. Peter and Mario have played together in the metal band ‘Winterville’. Fabio Canini is perhaps less known by the whole public. But as a session musician he has been on stage with many bands. On June 5 ‘Sloper‘ released their debut EP, with four heavy classic rock tracks.

Two fantastic drummers and two ditto guitarists, that promises a lot. Last year I visited one of their try out shows. They blew the roof off, I expect to hear this tremendous energy on this EP.

After the relaxed start of ‘Mind Melter‘ the dull sound is noticeable. I’m sure this is the intention, but will everyone appreciate it? The vocals sound distorted, which makes Peter’s words quite difficult to understand. The cool guitar-playing, and the drumming of the men do not fully come into their own. Yet you get into the flow of this delicious rock song, which by the way is simple in structure.

I’m alive‘ has a nice start on guitar. The vocals are easier to understand, but the vintage sound remains. Peter’s power rock voice is less well expressed because of this. Although this song has a simple structure as well, unknowingly I tap along with my foot. The same happens with ‘I Wanna Know‘. It listens away nicely, but I’m not really impressed. After a rousing instrumental piece this song ends quite unexpectedly. Played live, this certainly instrumental piece will be extended.

With ‘Shot Down‘ you may notice best that when played live, it will have a rousing effect. Here on the EP this happens as well, I turn up the volume a bit. If the sound was less vintage, I would have turned up the volume even further.

To be honest, I expected more sprit on this EP, because that’s what the guys have in them. That’s not quite reflected here. For lovers of vintage sound and delicious uncomplicated rock, ‘Sloper‘ will certainly appeal. And played live everything will be fine. Moreover, there will be a full CD later this year. I am eagerly looking forward to that, because this foursome has a great spirit.
