Volcán is the fourth full-length album by ¡Pendejo! The name is Spanish, but this alternative heavy rock band is hailing simply from the Netherlands. The band (which has been around for 15 years now) has its own blend, adding brass instruments to their stoner/rock, among other things. The album comes via Chancho Records, which is their own independent rock label.

‘Tu Hermana’ has a wonderfully dingy start, the strings sounding pleasantly heavy. The tempo is exhilarating. I barely understand Spanish, but for those who speak Spanish, can read along with the lyrics. Pastuso has a pleasantly raucous voice, and he sings at quite a high tempo at times.
The brass instruments hardly stand out at first. A little later, the brass come more to the fore. The alternation, or melange, of the brass with the heavy/stoner rock is good. If you don’t know the band yet, it’s definitely surprising. The ending is nicely unexpected.

Despite the contrasts in the music, the balance is maintained. The mix of styles is regularly special. Jaap ‘Monchito’ Melman and Menno ‘El Jipi’ Roymans provide plenty of nice guitar work. Menno also plays trombone. Pastuso is the other brass player, playing trumpet. Stef ‘El Rojo’ Gubbels’ bass is nice and evident. Sjoerd ‘Nudo’ van der Knoop shows good drumming.

In ‘La Pistola Del Anciano’, you can feel the hectic atmosphere. No wonder; as the lyrics of this short song are about shoppers rushing about… but not seeing the elderly man with a gun. The tempo of vocals and music of ‘El Nuevo Novio’ is and remains quite fast. This makes the contrast so much bigger with the summer-sounding intro of ‘Vamos A La Haya. This song about The Hague is al sunshine and rainbows. The alternation and/or mix of rock and the summery atmosphere creates a special blend. On one side, you almost feel you are on the beach. On the other, you feel a contradiction of wantonness. This interaction reappears several times.

There are also serious topics, as ‘La Reina De La Ametralladora’ is about Rotterdam’s Fannie Schoonheyt. In the Spanish civil war, she fought against Franco’s troops. Pastuso’s voice sounds grim in the tightly played part. The rousing, instrumental part is delightful. Could this represent Frannie’s drive as she kept going? The ending dies away nicely, running into ‘Ninguno’. The atmosphere is almost creepy, the music has a pleasant flow. At times when the vocals are more mellow, the music goes with it. There are cool, rather slow changes in tempo and volume. In the softer played parts, Pastuso’s raw voice comes out beautifully, he sings with intense empathy. The small played part is superb, I am one with vocals and music that is sometimes psychedelic in character. The sudden build-up in tempo and volume is well chosen. The fading end is awesome. Although I don’t understand it, I am definitely touched by this fantastic song.

After a short silence, acoustic guitar sounds are heard. Again I am touched, vocals and music are soft but powerful at the same time. This CD ends very calmly; in silence, I let this last song sink in for a while.

The uptempo parts are really uplifting. When ¡Pendejo! plays live, the roof will surely tear off. In almost all the songs, there is not only a mix of styles, but there are also various tempo and/or volume changes. You can hear various emotions in vocals and/or music. You don’t have to understand Spanish to appreciate Volcán.

¡Pendejo! – Volcán

Volcán is het vierde full length album van ¡Pendejo!. De naam is Spaanstalig, maar deze alternatieve heavy rockband komt gewoon uit Nederland. De band (die inmiddels 15 jaar bestaat) heeft een eigen mix, ze voegen onder andere koperblazers toe aan hun stoner/rock. Het album komt via Chancho Records, dit is hun eigen, onafhankelijke rock label.

‘Tu Hermana’ heeft een heerlijk groezelige start, de snaren klinken lekker zwaar. Het tempo is opzwepend. Ik versta nauwelijks Spaans, maar voor wie het Spaans beheerst kan meelezen met de songteksten. Pastuso heeft een aangename rauwe stem, en zingt soms in een vrij hoog tempo.
De koperblazers vallen in eerste instantie nauwelijks op. Even later komen de koperblazers meer naar de voorgrond. De afwisseling, dan wel de melange van het koper met de heavy/stoner rock is goed. Als je de band nog niet kent, is het zeker verrassend. Het einde is leuk onverwacht.

Ondanks de contrasten in de muziek blijft de balans bewaard. De mix van stijlen is regelmatig bijzonder. Jaap ‘Monchito’ Melman en Menno ‘El Jipi’ Roymans zorgen voor lekker veel gitaarwerk. Menno speelt daarnaast ook trombone. Pastuso is de andere koperblazer, hij speelt trompet. De bas van Stef ‘El Rojo’ Gubbels is lekker duidelijk aanwezig. Sjoerd ‘Nudo’ van der Knoop laat goed drumwerk horen.

In ‘La Pistola Del Anciano’ voel je de hectiek. Geen wonder; want de tekst van dit korte nummer gaat over winkelend publiek dat zich haast.. maar de bejaarde man met een pistool over het hoofd ziet. Het tempo van zang en muziek van ‘El Nuevo Novio’ is en blijft behoorlijk snel. Des te groter is het contrast met het zomers klinkende intro van ‘Vamos A La Haya. Dit nummer over Den Haag is niet alleen maar rozengeur en maneschijn. Door de afwisseling en/of mix van rock en de zomerse sfeer ontstaat er een bijzonder melange. Aan de ene kant voel je je bijna op het strand. Aan de andere kant voel je een tegenstelling van baldadigheid. Deze wisselwerking komt een aantal keer terug.

Er komen ook serieuze onderwerpen aan bod, want ‘La Reina De La Ametralladora’ gaat over over de Rotterdamse Fannie Schoonheyt. In de Spaanse burgeroorlog vocht zijn mee tegen de troepen van Franco. De stem van Pastuso klinkt in het strak gespeelde deel grimmig. Het opzwepende, instrumentale deel is heerlijk. Zou dit staan voor de gedrevenheid van Frannie die steeds maar door ging? Het einde sterft mooi weg, en loopt over in ‘Ninguno’. De sfeer is bijna griezelig, de muziek heeft een aangename flow. Op de momenten dat de zang zachter is, gaat de muziek daarin mee. Er zijn gave, vrij langzame veranderingen in tempo en volume. In de zachter gespeelde delen, komt de rauwe stem van Pastuso mooi naar voren, hij zingt met intense beleving. Het klein gespeelde deel is super, ik ben één met zang en muziek die soms psychedelisch van karakter is. De plotselinge opbouw van tempo en volume is goed gekozen. Het wegstervend einde is gaaf. Hoewel ik het niet versta, word ik wel degelijk geraakt door dit fantastische nummer.

Na een korte stilte hoor je akoestische gitaarklanken. Weer word ik geraakt, zang en muziek zijn zacht, maar krachtig tegelijk. Deze cd eindigt heel kalm; in stilte laat ik dit laatste nummer nog even op mij inwerken.

De uptempo delen zijn echt opzwepend. Als ¡Pendejo! live speelt, dan gaat het dak er vast en zeker af. In bijna alle nummers is er niet alleen een mix van stijlen, maar er zijn ook diverse tempo en/of volume wisselingen. Je hoort diverse emoties in zang en/of muziek. Je hoeft geen Spaans te verstaan om Volcán te waarderen.
