Marcel Coenen is a versatile guitarist. In addition, he plays bass, and some of the keyboard parts. Unlike his previous albums, his new album ‘The Axe’ contains only vocal songs. For this, he invited several vocalists. Marcel wrote the music, the vocalists wrote the lyrics.
The spherical intro of ‘Can You Feel It Now’ is bright, the sampled sounds a bit duller in sound. You can feel that something is about to happen. After a roar, the music starts, in which the strings play an important part. You feel Ollie Oldenburg’s expression, sometimes he sings slightly theatrically. Marcel’s guitar solo is fabulous. The sound flows pleasantly back and forth in the headset. The rhythm is steady, Hans In ‘t Zand’s drumming is top notch.
In ‘Echoes Of Life’, the metal influences emerge. Vocalist Pascal Remans’ energy is palpable. Occasionally the vocals are stacked, with or without a slight echo in the background. In both the vocal part and the instrumental parts, the guitar playing is once again superb. What rapidity he does have with his fingers! During the breaks, the difference in pitch between the drums is easy to hear. The build-up of verse-rephrase does make it a bit predictable.
The higher (keyboard) tones and high vocals in the background in ‘Mirage’ fit well with the slightly heavier sounds of (bass) guitar. This flows into calmer parts, with lower vocals. Almost imperceptibly, the volume increases again. There is sometimes a reverberation on the (background) vocals, which may make Colleen Gray’s vocals sound a bit surreal, but it suits the lyrics. At the end, you hear lovely details of cymbals.
The gentle flow in vocals and music of ‘An Unfairy Tale’ can almost be called sugary. Then Marcel rips through the calm music with his guitar, again I am touched. The up-tempo start of ‘Old Ways’ provides great contrast to the previous songs. Kelly Sundown Carpenter showcases beautiful vocal outbursts. This rousing song invites you to sing along at home. Every song has beautiful/special ingredients. For instance, in ‘What I Look For’ the vocals are particularly stacked.
‘The Last Trip’ contains surprising twists. ‘Endless Liberty’ is one of the songs in which Marcel plays keyboard in addition to bass and guitar. Sascha Burchardt’s versatile voice comes into its own beautifully here.
‘It’s Over Now’ has wonderful twists and turns. Here no less than three vocalists sing, their voices, and the low grunts form a fine blend. The guitar solo gets under my skin. In terms of construction, this is a captivating track. ‘Sovereign Of Shadows’ is at least as captivating. That includes the turn to a calmly played part with acoustic guitar sounds, and the compelling electric guitar playing that follows. This song surprises all the way to the end.
The calm percussion fits the mood of ‘Don’t Let The Freedom Fool Ya’. No keyboards in this last song. Just bass, guitars, percussion and vocals. Again, the layers in vocals and music are well spread over the headphones. If you don’t have set the volume that loud, the soft tinkling (bar-chime) sounds are barely noticeable.
The reverberation occasionally heard is sometimes on the edge of being too much or not. A few songs may be “too smoott” for metal fans who only like the “roughe”’ stuff. Constantly, the guitar playing is enjoyable, moreover Marcel shows how versatile he is. Despite this diversity and the different vocalists, the songs on ‘The Axe’ fit together just fine.

Marcel Coenen – The Axe
Marcel Coenen is een veelzijdige gitarist. Bovendien speelt hij bas, en een deel van de keyboard partijen. In tegenstelling tot zijn vorige albums, bevat zijn nieuwe album ‘The Axe’ alleen vocale nummers. Hiervoor heeft hij diverse vocalisten uitgenodigd. Marcel schreef de muziek, de vocalisten schreven de teksten.
Het sferische intro van ‘Can You Feel It Now’ is helder, de gesampelde geluiden zijn wat doffer van klank. Je voelt dat er iets gaat gebeuren. Na een brul start de muziek, waarin de snaren een belangrijk aandeel hebben. Je voelt de beleving van Ollie Oldenburg, soms zingt hij licht theatraal. De gitaarsolo van Marcel is gaaf. Het geluid loopt leuk heen en weer in de headset. Het ritme is steady, het drumwerk van Hans In ‘t Zand is top.
In ‘Echoes Of Life’ komen de metal invloeden naar boven. De energie van zanger Pascal Remans is voelbaar. Af en toe is de zang gestapeld, al dan niet met een lichte echo op de achtergrond. Zowel in het vocale deel als in de instrumentale delen is het gitaarspel weer super. Wat een snelheid heeft hij toch in de vingers! Tijdens de breaks is het verschil in toonhoogte tussen de drums goed te horen. De opbouw van couplet-refrein maakt het wel iets voorspelbaar.
De hogere (keyboard) tonen en hoge zang op achtergrond in ‘Mirage’ passen goed bij de iets zwaardere klanken van (bas) gitaar. Dit vloeit uit naar rustiger deel, met lagere zang. Bijna ongemerkt neemt het volume weer toe. Op de (achtergrond)zang zit soms een galm, hierdoor klinkt de zang van Colleen Gray misschien wat surrealistisch, maar het past wel bij de tekst. Op het einde hoor je leuke details van de cimbalen.
De rustige flow in zang en muziek van ‘An Unfairy Tale’ is bijna zoet te noemen. Dan scheurt Marcel met zijn gitaar door de kalme muziek, weer word ik geraakt. De up-tempo start van ‘Old Ways’ zorgt voor groot contrast met de voorgaande nummers. Kelly Sundown Carpenter laat mooie vocale uithalen horen. Dit opzwepende nummer nodigt uit om thuis lekker mee te zingen. Ieder nummer heeft mooie/speciale ingrediënten. Bijvoorbeeld in ‘What I Look For’
is de zang bijzonder gestapeld. ‘The Last Trip’ bevat verassende wendingen. ‘Endless Liberty’ is één van de nummers waarin Marcel behalve bas en gitaar ook keyboard speelt. De veelzijdige stem van Sascha Burchardt komt hier mooi tot zijn recht.
‘It’s Over Now’ heeft mooie twist en turns. Hier zingen maar liefst drie vocalisten, hun stemmen, en de lage grunts vormen een mooie blend. De gitaarsolo kruipt onder mijn huid. Qua opbouw is dit een boeiende track. ‘Sovereign Of Shadows’ is op zijn minst net zou boeiend. Dat geldt ook voor de wending naar een kalm gespeeld deel met akoestische gitaarklanken, en het meeslepende elektrisch gitaarspel wat hierop volgt. Dit nummer verrast tot en met het einde.
De kalme percussie past bij de sfeer van ‘Don’t Let The Freedom Fool Ya’. Geen toetsen in dit laatste nummer. Alleen bas, gitaren, percussie en zang. De laagjes in zang en muziek zijn ook hier goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Als je het volume niet zo hard hebt staan, vallen de zacht rinkelende (bar-chime) geluidjes nauwelijks op.
De galm die af en toe te horen is, is soms op de grens van wel of niet te veel.
Enkele nummers zijn misschien “te braaf” voor de metal fans die alleen van het “ruigere” werk houden. Steeds is het genieten van het gitaarspel, bovendien laat Marcel horen hoe veelzijdig hij is. Ondanks deze diversiteit en de verschillende vocalisten, passen de nummers van ‘The Axe’ prima bij elkaar.
