The English melodic rock band Magnum exists almost 50 years! Of course, there have been several changes in the line-up, but guitarist Tony Clarkin and singer Bob Catley have been there from the beginning. Their artwork has always looked beautiful. After a number of quite colourful album covers, the artwork of new album, ‘The Monster Roars’, is a bit darker. This time they chose a very detailed photo. This one is so beautiful, that you keep on looking at it. Most of the lyrics are about the here and now, and include social and political issues.

The start of ‘The Monster Roars’ is perhaps a bit calmer than you would expect with the title. But the vocals come out well because of this. As expected, the rock doesn’t wait long. Rock is interspersed with rather quiet pieces, in which now and then piano sounds are incorporated. Bob’s voice has a little rough edge, his voice is still beautiful. There is a lovely, rousing instrumental rocking piece. After a vocal outburst, the music dies away pretty quickly.

‘Remember’ has a compelling, instrumental start, here Bob sings suitably sensitive. The rhythm gets a rousing character. The build-up is a bit more complex than the standard verse chorus. This provides a fine balance between accessibility and surprises. The balance or alternation between delicious rock and subdued parts is also very good. This also applies to the way the instruments are ‘distributed’. The sound of strings is very well added, the keyboard work is very varied. Also ‘All You Believe In’ has a subdued start. Dennis Ward is the new bass player, he also takes care of the backing vocals. And he does that very well, the voices blending very well together. Moreover, the amount of backing vocals is well chosen. Not too much, not too little, and not too predictable either. The piano sounds are again well added. The end is a bit predictable, but beautiful.

The lyrics of ‘I Won’t Let You Down’ are perhaps a bit sugary. This makes it a lovely, calm sing-along, which will certainly work well at live shows. That certainly counts for ‘No Steppin’ Stones’. Here, a horn section provides a cheerful atmosphere. The distribution of the songs on the album is good, because ‘That Freedom Word’ has some more rocking elements. But also here it is alternated with subdued parts. ‘Walk The Silent Hours’ is a pleasant ballad. Vocals and music constantly form a fine harmony. The songs that follow are all very comfortable. It is great to turn up the volume and rock out. The spoken words after ‘The Day After The Night Before’ are a bit difficult to understand, but it is fun to hear. Finally, ‘Can’t Buy Yourself Heaven’, a beautiful song in mid-paced, with some great guitar playing and a nice bass groove.

All songs are built with care, they clearly have a beginning and an end. There are some predictable things, yet there are plenty of nice surprises in vocals and music. There is a fine balance between the (exhilarating) rhythm and melody. Magnum proves that, even after fifty years, they can still be surprising!

Magnum – The Monster Roars

De Engelse melodic rockband Magnum bestaat bijna 50 jaar! Natuurlijk zijn er diverse wisselingen in de bezetting geweest, maar gitarist Tony Clarkin en zanger Bob Catley zijn er vanaf het begin bij. Hun artwork ziet al altijd prachtig uit. Na een aantal vrij kleurrijke albumcovers, is het artwork van nieuwe album, ‘The Monster Roars’, wat donkerder van kleur. Deze keer is er gekozen voor een zeer gedetailleerde foto. Deze is zo mooi, dat je er naar blijft kijken. De meeste teksten gaan over het hier en nu, er komen onder andere sociale en politieke kwesties aan bod.

De start van ‘The Monster Roars’ is misschien wat rustiger dan je zou verwachten bij de titel. Maar hierdoor komt de zang goed tot zijn recht. Zoals verwacht laat de rock niet lang op zich wachten. Rock wordt afgewisseld met vrij rustige stukken, waar zo nu en dan pianoklanken in zijn verwerkt. Bob’s stem heeft een klein ruw randje, zijn stem is nog steeds mooi. Er is een heerlijk, opzwepend instrumentaal rockend stuk. Na een vocale uithaal sterft de muziek vrij snel weg.

‘Remember’ heeft een meeslepende, instrumentale start, hier zingt Bob passend gevoelig. Het ritme krijgt een opzwepend karakter. De opbouw is wat complexer dan het standaard couplet refrein. Hierdoor is er een prima balans tussen toegankelijkheid en verrassingen. Ook de balans dan wel afwisseling tussen heerlijke rock en ingetogen delen is zeer goed. Dat geldt ook voor de manier waarop de instrumenten ‘verdeeld’ zijn. Het geluid van strijkinstrumenten is prima toegevoegd, het toetsenwerk is prima gevarieerd. Ook ‘All You Believe In’ heeft een ingetogen start. Dennis Ward is de nieuwe bassist, daarnaast zorgt hij voor de achtergrondzang. En dat doet hij prima, de stemmen kleuren goed bij elkaar. Bovendien is de mate van achtergrondzang goed gekozen. Niet te veel, niet te weinig, bovendien niet al te voorspelbaar. De pianoklanken zijn ook hier weer prima toegevoegd. Het einde is een beetje voorspelbaar, maar wel mooi.

De tekst van ‘I Won’t Let You Down’ is misschien een beetje zoet. Hier door is het een heerlijke vrij rustige meezinger, die het bij live shows zeker goed zal doen. Dat geldt zeker voor ‘No Steppin’ Stones’. Hier zorgt een blazerssectie voor een vrolijke sfeer. De verdeling van de nummers op de cd is goed, want ‘That Freedom Word’ heeft weer wat meer rockende elementen. Al wordt het ook hier afgewisseld met ingetogen delen. ‘Walk The Silent Hours’ is een aangename ballad. Zang en muziek vormen constant een prima harmonie. De nummers die volgen liggen allemaal lekker in het gehoor. Het is heerlijk om de volumeknop flink ver open te draaien en lekker mee te rocken. De gesproken woorden na ‘The Day After The Night Before’ zijn wat lastig te verstaan, maar het is wel leuk om te horen. Tot slot ‘Can’t Buy Yourself Heaven’, een mooi nummer in mid tempo, met onder andere heerlijk gitaarspel en een lekker basloopje.

Alle nummers zijn met zorg opgebouwd, ze hebben duidelijk een kop en staart. Er zijn enkele voorspelbare dingen, toch zijn er volop leuke verrassingen in zang en muziek. Er is een prima balans tussen het (opzwepende) ritme en melodie. Magnum bewijst dat ze, zelfs naar vijftig jaar, nog steeds verrassend kunnen zijn!
