Lazy Grey blues/rock/funk band Lazy Grey was formed in Antwerp some four years ago. ‘Making Tracks is their debut album. This one starts nicely with ‘Blood From A Stone’. There is a slightly dull layer over the music. Thomas Maenhout’s voice suits the music just fine. Fortunately, he has a fairly clear pronunciation, as the lyric booklet is not easy to read. A pity, because it does look nice. But of course it’s all about vocals and music, and that’s fine. This features lovely guitar playing by Joost de Lange. Keyboardist Stefan Verbeek, who plays his Hammond well. All this is completed by Jan Meijers on bass and drummer Robert Cogen.

‘The Equation’ is a well-constructed track with lovely rests built in. You can tell from everything that this is meant to be played live, because it invites interaction with the audience.The rhythm of ‘Man On A Mission’ is accessible, I automatically tap along on the rhythm. Thomas’ vocals and drums come more to the fore at one point.
The backing vocals in ‘Big Talkin’ Man’ are a bit sweet. Despite the nice changes in rhythm, it is less catchy than the previous tracks. This is made up again in ‘Long Time Coming’. There are nice details in the organ playing, among other things. The end is stretched longer, as you particularly hear in live performances.

The vocals in ‘Making Tracks’ are pleasantly slow and low. Thomas accompanies himself with a touch of acoustic guitar playing. For a moment, tempo and volume go up a bit. Again, you notice that this will create extra atmosphere during a concert. During the subdued part, there are piano sounds. When tempo and volume go up again, Thomas has a rough edge to his voice. Joost conveys emotion with cool guitar playing, Thomas showcases a powerful vocal outburst. This title track dies away nicely.

The songs fit together well, yet they differ enough from each other. For instance, ‘Hole In My Pocket’ is nice and funky. While ‘I Believe (I’ll be leaving)’ is a ” pounding” blues track. The backing vocals are a bit predictable at times. But it all sticks in your head. The first part of ‘Heavy Rain’ is subdued. Almost unnoticed, some variations in tempo and volume follow. Everything is intensely played and sung, Thomas sings very convincingly. ‘Fakin’ The Blues ‘ has a laid back intro in which Robert plays suitably mellow drums. There are nice changes in tempo and volume, yet the build-up is quite predictable. ‘Good Tonight’ is uplifting, mainly because of the drums. The rough vocals in the louder uptempo part are reminding of the raw rock vocals you also heard decades ago. Again, the piano playing stands out positively. The vocals in the funky’ Stray Dog Blues’ sound a bit distorted. This last song has an unexpected ending.

The balance between vocals and music, and between the instruments themselves, is fine.
The intros and outros are well thought out. Everything is accessible and (partly) uplifting. Hopefully there will be gigs for Lazy Grey, because these 12 songs from ‘Making Tracks’ taste for more… and especially live shows.

Lazy Grey – Making Tracks

De Lazy Grey blues/rock/funk band Lazy Grey werd zo’n vier jaar geleden opgericht in Antwerpen. ‘Making Tracks is hun debuut album. Deze start leuk met ‘Blood From A Stone’. Er ligt een licht dof laagje over de muziek. De stem van Thomas Maenhout past prima bij de muziek. Gelukkig heeft hij een vrij duidelijke uitspraak, want het tekstboekje is niet goed leesbaar. Jammer, want het ziet er wel leuk uit. Maar het gaat natuurlijk om zang en muziek, en dat is prima. Dit bevat heerlijk gitaarspel van Joost de Lange. Toetsenist Stefan Verbeek, die zijn Hammond goed laat horen. Dit alles wordt compleet gemaakt door Jan Meijers op bas en drummer Robert Cogen.

‘The Equation’ is een goed opgebouwde track waarin leuke rusten zijn verwerkt. Je merkt aan alles dat dit bedoeld is on live te gaan spelen, want dit vraagt om interactie met het publiek.Het ritme van ‘Man On A Mission’ is toegankelijk, als vanzelf tap ik mee met de maat. De zang van Thomas en de drums komen op een gegeven moment meer naar de voorgrond.
De achtergrondzang in ‘Big Talkin’ Man’ is een beetje zoet. Ondanks de leuke veranderingen in het ritme, is het geheel minder pakkend dan de voorgaande tracks. Dat wordt weer goed gemaakt in ‘Long Time Coming‘. Er zijn mooie details in onder andere het orgelspel. Het einde is langer gerekt, zoals je vooral bij live optredens hoort.

De zang in ‘Making Tracks’ is aangenaam langzaam en laag. Thomas begeleidt zichzelf met een vleugje akoestisch gitaarspel. Even gaan tempo en volume een beetje omhoog. Weer merk je dat dit tijdens een concert voor extra sfeer zal zorgen. Tijdens het ingetogen deel zijn er pianoklanken. Als tempo en volume weer hoger liggen, heeft Thomas een ruw randje op zijn stem. Joost brengt emotie over met gaaf gitaarspel, Thomas laat een power uithaal horen. Deze titeltrack sterft mooi weg.

De nummers sluiten goed bij elkaar aan, maar toch verschillen ze genoeg van elkaar. Zo is bijvoorbeeld ‘Hole In My Pocket’ lekker funky. Terwijl ‘I Believe (I’ll be leaving)’ een “stampende” blues track. De achtergrondzang is soms wat voorspelbaar. Maar het geheel blijft wel in je hoofd kleven. Het eerste stuk van ‘Heavy Rain’ is ingetogen. Bijna ongemerkt volgen er enkele variaties in tempo en volume. Het geheel is intens gespeeld en gezongen, Thomas zingt heel overtuigend. ‘Fakin’ The Blues ‘ heeft een laid back intro waarin Robert passend zacht drumt. Er zijn leuke veranderingen in tempo en volume, toch is de opbouw vrij voorspelbaar. ‘Good Tonight’ is vooral door de drums opzwepend. De ruwe stem in het luidere uptempo deel doet denken aan de rauwe rockzang die je decennia geleden ook hoorde. Weer valt het pianospel positief op. De zang in het funky’ Stray Dog Blues’ klinkt wat vervormd. Dit laatste nummer heeft een onverwacht einde.

De balans tussen zang en muziek, en tussen de instrumenten onderling is prima.
Er is goed nagedacht over de intro’s en de outro’s. Het geheel is toegankelijk en (deels) opzwepend. Hopelijk komen er optredens voor Lazy Grey, want deze 12 nummers van ‘Making Tracks’ smaken naar meer… en vooral naar live shows.
