Lars Granat is a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Sweden. Love’s Bright Light’ is his third solo album. This concept album is about his family and fatherhood. ‘The One’ has a quiet slightly sweet opening. Lars’ singing is a bit nasal, you can feel the intensity with which he sings. The piano sounds turn into a delightful piece of rock, which slowly becomes a bit heavier. The twists and turns are very diverse and generally sudden. The build-up to the end is special. ‘The Girl Who Stopped The World’ has a quiet, instrumental start with repeating tones. Lars sings convincingly, that goes for the small parts as well as the powerfully sung pieces. Not only in the vocals there are considerable differences in volume, there is also a lot of variation in the music. So, the songs are interestingly constructed. The sound is certainly good, but could have been a bit better. The small parts played and the powerfully played and sent parts would have come out even better.

The composition of ‘Oh Son’ is very good, but the tinny sound of the cymbals is a bit disturbing. There are several beautiful, unexpected twists and turns. Lars sings both the small sung parts and the vocal lyrics credibly. The spoken sampling is very well divided between right and left in the headphones. There is a lot of pleasant organ playing in ‘Pinnacle’, with gusts it is nice and bombastic. The repeating percussion stops a bit too late, but otherwise this is a cool song. Small pieces of it have common ground with Spock’s Beard. Lars wrote this for his youngest son, who is full of energy, and always shows his emotions clearly. As a father he tries to appreciate this instead of suppressing it.

In terms of text ‘Words Are But Words’ is a bit ‘sugarly’, but when a man sings this to his wife/girlfriend, you melt, don’t you? This song also has some rocking elements, so this will be a lovely power ballad like song. ‘Love’s Bright Light’ has a compelling start. Moments later the music is pleasantly bombastic. Also, in this last song there are plenty of changes. Once in a while Lars’ voice is a bit too soft compared to the music. Furthermore, vocals and music are well balanced. The sound runs nicely back and forth in the headphones. Full of conviction he sings his love for his beloved. The chosen words are sometimes a bit clichéd, but that’s part of it. This well constructed final track has a beautiful, extensive build-up to the end.

There are quite a lot of details in the songs, moreover they are nicely distributed over the headphones. Some parts are complex and or bombastic, then there is quite a lot coming your way. Other, quiet pieces may be a bit sweet, but that’s allowed with this family theme. Both have nice details in them. The songs sometimes have quite a lot of layers, so it was quite a job for Lars to play and sing everything. This is a successful one-man project!

Kaleiodoreal – Love’s Bright Light

Lars Granat is een zanger en multi instrumentalist uit Zweden. ‘Love’s Bright Light’ is zijn derde soloalbum. Dit conceptalbum gaat over zijn gezin en het vaderschap. ‘The One’ heeft een rustige licht zoete opening. De zang van Lars iets nasaal, je voelt de intensiteit waarmee hij zingt. De pianoklanken gaan over in een heerlijk stuk rock, dat langzaam iets heavier wordt. De wendingen zijn heel divers en zijn over het algemeen plotseling. De opbouw naar het einde is bijzonder. ‘The Girl Who Stopped The World’ heeft rustige, instrumentale start met herhalende tonen. Lars zingt overtuigend, dat geldt voor zowel de klein gezongen delen als de krachtig gezongen stukken. Niet alleen in de zang zijn er flinke volumeverschillen, ook in de muziek is er veel variatie in het volume. De nummers zijn dus interessant opgebouwd. Het geluid is zeker goed, maar had nog iets beter gekund. Dan waren zo wel de klein gespeelde delen en de krachtig gespeelde en gezonden delen nog beter tot zijn recht gekomen.

De compositie van ‘Oh Son’ zeer goed, maar het blikkerige geluid van de cimbalen is een beetje storend. Er zijn diverse mooie, onverwachte wendingen. Lars zingt zowel de klein gezongen delen als de vocale uithalen geloofwaardig. Met de gesproken sampling is goed gespeeld met de verdeling tussen rechts en links in de koptelefoon. Er is aangenaam veel orgelspel in ‘Pinnacle’, met vlagen is het lekker bombastisch. De herhalende percussie houdt iets te laat op, maar verder is dit een gaaf opgebouwd nummer. Kleine stukjes hiervan hebben raakvlakken met Spock’s Beard. Lars heeft dit geschreven voor zijn jongste zoon die vol energie zit, en zijn emoties altijd duidelijk zien. Als vader probeert hij dit te waarderen in plaats van de kop in te drukken.

Qua tekst is ‘Words Are But Words’ een beetje zoet, maar als een man dit voor zijn vrouw/vriendin zingt, dan smelt je toch? Dit nummer heeft ook wat rockende elementen, zodat dit een heerlijke power ballad achtig nummer wordt. ‘Love’s Bright Light’ heeft een meeslepende start. Even later is de muziek aangenaam bombastisch. Ook in dit laatste nummer zijn er volop veranderingen. Heel af en toe is de stem van Lars iets te zacht in vergelijking met de muziek. Verder zijn zang en muziek prima in balans. Het geluid loopt leuk heen en weer in de koptelefoon. Vol overtuiging bezingt hij zijn liefde voor zijn geliefde. De gekozen woorden zijn soms wat clichématig, maar dat hoort erbij. Deze prima opgebouwde slottrack heeft een mooie, uitgebreide opbouw naar het einde.

Er zijn best veel details in de nummers, bovendien zijn ze leuk verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Sommige stukken van complex en of bombastisch, dan komt er best veel op je af. Andere, rustige stukjes zijn soms misschien een beetje zoet, maar dat mag bij dit familie thema. Voor beide geldt dat er leuke details in verwerkt zitten. De nummers hebben soms best veel laagjes, het was voor Lars dus een hele klus om alles in te spelen en te zingen. Dit is een goed geslaagd one man project!
