This review is about the Mexican band Cast (not to be confused with the English rock band with the same name). This Mexican prog/sympho rock band was founded in 1978 (!). Of course, there have been several changes in the line-up. At the end of the 80s, Jose Antonio Bringas, one of the best drummers in Mexico, joined the band. His energetic way of drumming takes Cast to a higher level. In 1993, the band opened ‘Castudio’, allowing them to record albums in a professional manner. About a year later, they released ‘Landing in a Serious Mind’ (1994). Over the years, a few more line-up changes followed, what remained was the constant quality. In 2017, the band signed with ‘Progressive Promotion Record’. Under this label they released ‘Power and Outcome’, which received rave reviews. Very recently, they launched their twentieth album, very appropriately called ‘Vigesimus’.

The opening track ‘Ortni’ kicks off at full speed. Despite the variations, the pace remains quite high. There is a nice melange of light screaming guitar work and violin play, among other things. There are many layers and many details. The changes keep on coming, sometimes sudden, sometimes they flow into each other. One moment there are summery influences, the next moment the electronic touch of the keys comes forward, whether or not mixed with violin play. So there is a lot of pleasantness in this instrumental song. Non-stop it goes on to ‘Black Ashes And Black Boxes’, this one starts with piano playing. The vocals come in quickly, you don’t just sing along with the lyrics. Vocal parts and instrumental pieces are well alternated. The many layers in the music and the details are well distributed over the headphones.

‘Another Light’ is with its pleasant melody the most accessible song so far. ‘Manley’ has a jazzy intro. Almost unnoticed this has changed into pure prog. There are an incredible number of twists and turns. The violin is frequently present, but never dominant. Between all the ‘hectic’ a short rest is built in. The bass and the drums are much more than “just” a rhythm section. Time after time, the dynamic drumming stands out, moreover, there are some cool bass grooves to be heard. The fast guitar play is finger-licking good. In short: this instrumental track is also built up fantastically.

After the theatrical last part of ‘Crossing’, the lovely, quiet intro of ‘The March’
provides a great contrast. Because of the piano playing and the sound of strings, the whole thing is slightly classical. In the harmony vocals, the voices melt together beautifully. Because of the emotion in the vocals and the calmer music, you listen more intensely to the lyrics. Rocking elements provide a nice build-up in tempo and volume. The transition to the instrumental ‘Contacto’ is not quite right. In ‘Dredging To The Higher Plane’, there is a nice relationship between the staccato rhythm, the melody and the vocals. After an unexpected turn, this last track continues in a totally different way. What remains is the good balance between music and vocals, and between the instruments themselves. Moreover, this last track is also well filled with many details and twists. After a fine build-up, it extinguishes nicely.

The ten tracks on ‘Vigesimus’ are complex, sometimes it seems as if the musical instruments tumble over each other like a whirlwind. There are countless layers, twists and details. Yet everything remains in balance because the whole is very well put together and fantastically played. Vocally too, everything is fine. The voices fit the music and each other well. Again, Cast has made a fantastic album.

Cast – Vigesimus

Deze recensie gaat over de Mexicaanse band Cast (niet te verwarren met de Engelse rockband met dezelfde naam). Deze Mexicaanse prog/symfo rockband werd in 1978 (!) opgericht. Natuurlijk zijn er verschillende wisselingen geweest in de bezetting. Eind jaren ’80 komt Jose Antonio Bringas, één van de beste drummers van Mexico, bij de band.
Zijn energieke manier van drummen brengt Cast naar een hoger level. In 1993 opende de band ‘Castudio’, zodat de band op een professionele manier albums op kan nemen. Ongeveer een jaar later brachten ze ‘Landing in a Serious Mind’ (1994) uit. In de loop der jaren volgde nog enkele bandwissels, wat bleef was de constante kwaliteit. In 2017 tekende de band bij ‘Progressive Promotion Record’. Onder dit label brachten ze ‘Power and Outcome’ uit, waarmee ze lovende recensies kregen. Heel recent lanceerde ze hun twintigste album, dat heel toepasselijk ’Vigesimus’, heet.

Het openingsnummer ‘Ortni’ gaat vol tempo van start. Ondanks de variaties blijft het tempo behoorlijk hoog. Er is een mooie melange van onder andere licht gillend gitaarwerk en vioolspel. Er zijn veel laagjes en veel details. De veranderingen blijven elkaar opvolgen, soms plotseling, soms vloeien ze in elkaar over. Het ene moment zijn er zomerse invloeden, het andere moment komt de elektronische kant van de toetsen naar voren, al dan niet vermengd met viool spel. Er komt dus aangenaam veel op je af in dit instrumentale nummer. Non-stop gaat het door naar ’Black Ashes And Black Boxes’, deze start met pianospel.
De zang komt er al snel bij, de tekst zing je niet zomaar even mee. Vocale delen en instrumentale stukken worden prima afgewisseld. De vele laagjes in de muziek en de details zijn goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon.

‘Another Light’ is met zijn aangename melodie het meest toegankelijkste nummer tot nu toe. ‘Manley’ heeft een jazzy intro. Bijna ongemerkt is dit overgegaan in pure prog. Er zijn onvoorstelbaar veel twists and turns. De viool veelvuldig aanwezig, maar is nergens overheersend. Tussen alle ‘hektiek’ is een korte rust ingebouwd. De bas en de drums zijn veel meer dan “alleen maar” ritmesectie. Keer op keer valt het dynamische drumwerk op, bovendien zijn er gave bas grooves te horen. Het snelle gitaarspel is om je vingers bij af te likken. Kortom: ook deze instrumentale track is fantastisch opgebouwd.

Na het theatrale laatste stuk van ‘Crossing’ zorgt het liefelijke, rustige intro van ‘The March’
voor een flink contrast. Door het pianospel en het geluid van strijkinstrumenten is het geheel licht klassiek georiënteerd. In de samenzang smelten de stemmen mooi samen. Door emotie in de zang en de rustigere muziek, luister je al snel intenser naar de tekst. Rockende elementen zorgen voor mooie opbouw in tempo en volume. De overgang naar het instrumentale ‘Contacto’ verloopt niet helemaal goed. In ‘Dredging To The Higher Plane’ is er een mooie verhoudging tussen het staccato ritme, de melodie en de zang. Na een onverwachte wending gaat deze laatste track totaal anders verder. Wat blijft is de goede balans tussen muziek en zang, en tussen de instrumenten onderling. Bovendien is ook deze laatste track goed gevuld met veel details en wendingen. Na een prima opbouw dooft dit mooi uit.

De tien nummers op ‘Vigesimus’ zijn complex, soms lijkt het alsof de muziekinstrumenten als een wervelwind over elkaar heen buitelen. Er zijn ontelbare laagjes, wendingen en details. Toch blijft alles in balans want het geheel zit zeer goed in elkaar en wordt fantastisch gespeeld. Ook vocaal is alles prima in orde. De stemmen passen goed bij de muziek, en bij elkaar. Cast heeft fantastisch wéér album gemaakt.
